And Phoenix Clarke makes her debut on the 5s (with Kubiak), with a three-set win.

Unless there is a massive upset, Stanford vs. UCLA at 4pm for tournament championship.

Belardi and Vincent have not lost a set yet.

Probably silly to start thinking about the rankings, but....
Looking at some of the teams ahead of Stanford in the AVCA poll:
#8 Georgia State beat four unranked teams
#7 LMU hasn't played yet; they take on #11 Cal and unranked Concordia (Irvine) tomorrow
#6 GCU beat #14 LBSU (3-2), swept two unranked teams, and lost (2-3) to #4 USC
#5 LSU beat two unranked teams and plays two more tomorrow

I could see Stanford moving up to #8 based on their performance so far, and maybe #7 (like in the CBVB poll).

I guess I called it.  Stanford now at #7 in both the coaches' poll and CBVB poll.
No movement in the top 6 (at least in AVCA).

Bright sunshine, dry sand but pretty strong gusts of wind.  I didn't mind the cold temp or wet sand back in the day when I played.  I had trouble dealing with gusty winds.

Not a Stanford story, but a story about one of their opponents. Haley Hallgren is playing BVB for UCLA this season with half of her left lung removed because of a cancerous tumor. She won a national championship for USC at #3. Now playing #5 for UCLA. Makes them even tougher. Stanford up 2-0 on Portland.  Stanford also has a player battling unusual challenges.  Kylee Matheson is playing on the #5 team today.  This is in her gostanford.com bio:

Mother sustained a heart attack when she was born, resulting in loss of oxygen to Kylee's brain and a mild case of Cerebral Palsy. As a result, she has been in physical therapy since she was 18-months old and doctors doubted she would ever play sports. Might be only DI collegiate student-athlete currently competing with CP.

Stanford wins 4-1 against St. Mary's.  Freshman team of Belardi/Vincent win both matches today.   Hodel/Wilson struggled a little at #3.

Not sure what happened in their second set (I was mainly watching court 1 at that point).  They looked pretty good in the third set.  Maybe a few too many hitting errors.

Nice to see some other players get try-outs at the 5s.

There was also an exhibition match for the 6s.  Abby Converse and Asha Johnson played for Stanford.  They ended up splitting the first two sets, and did not play a third.  I guess they wanted to get the second round of matches started as soon as possible.

ETA: I see Khazendar & Bierly played at the 6s against Portland (and won).

Also said hello to beach alumna Kat Anderson there (class of 2020).  She is in her first year of med school at Stanford.

Washington vs. Arizona is running long.  Huskies already won 3-1, but the 3s are still early in the second set.

Hodel & Kriz get the first point, 2-0.  Belardi & Vincent split first two sets (first time they've lost a set this season).

The 2s and 4s won, but 1s Ekstrom & Reilly fell 2-0.

The 5s frehsmen (Andersson & Kubiak) lost their first set 21-12, but came back to win the second 21-18.  In the third set, they had a lead early, but the Huskies tied and then UW had a couple of match points.  Andersson and Kubiak had their own match point but failed to convert, and finally fell 18-16.

The 3s (Harvey & Wilson) also lost their first and won their second.  Currently leading 9-5 in the third.

ETA:  And Harvey & Wilson take the third set 15-9.  Stanford wins 3-2.
