Unless it's Kristin Folkl . . . who you'd take at any stage of a coaching career.

Folkl still might be the best Stanford athlete ever . . . she has to be in the conversation, anyway - uber elite VB and hoopster.  Elway, Toi, Dotterer, Paye . . . Veris (how good was he in field events in track at Stanford?).

Am sure there are others I'm missing.  But in my lifetime, the most elite 2-sport Stanford athletes that I can think of are Elway, Folkl, and Cook.

Well add Lofton, Nelson, Osaisai and Mathias

Veris # 2 all time SP at Stanford 64-10

Well add Lofton, Nelson and Mathias

Agree on Folkl.  Also, one of the kindest and most humble people you will ever meet.

On dual athletes, there was Teyo.  Matt Lottich only played basketball at Stanford, but he was all-state in football and baseball as well in high school.  I have a feeling that someone like Catarina Macario would have been successful in pretty much any sport she pursued.

Jenna Gray deserves a mention.  Obviously excelled at volleyball, but also was pretty fabulous at javelin.

I had to laugh at the comment about Tara being “at the stage of her career” to not be interested in a two-sport athlete. I’m pretty sure she was at that stage decades ago, given the way she handled Folkl, who, IMHO, would have led us to a Title if she’d only been allowed to play more…

Here's one with accolades that I don't believe can be equaled.  John Lynch.  Just enshrined in the NFL Hall of Fame.  And yes indeed, he is honored in Cooperstown as well.  He was picked in the second round of the 1992 MLB draft.  He pitched for the Erie Sailors, a farm team for the (then) Florida Marlins, and threw the first pitch in Marlins' history.  His jersey hangs in the HoF because of that.

she would have led us to a title had a phantom 5th foul not been called on her clean block in the semis. i can still picture it clearly

Yep.

And wasn't it Folkl AND The Big Lefty (name escapes me, but she is a HS coach now - just looked it up Vanessa Nygaard) who both were injured in Feaster Harvard game?  I would have liked that team's chances to cut down the nets, too, had the Cardinal been healthy.

Not injured in the Harvard game, just not there for it. Nygaard tore her ACL in the late minutes of the last regular season game, didn't need to be in there and in retrospect, one has to wonder why Tara hadn't taken her out. Despite the loss of Nygaard, the NCAA still made Stanford a #1 seed for the tournament. Then Folkl tore her ACL during practice in the weeks before the 1st round of the tournament, and that fateful game. A nightmare, to put it mildly. The 2nd round was played in Berkeley that year, and I couldn't bring myself to attend after the debacle at Maples. But my husband did go to Berkeley, just as a matter of support for WBB, and to see how well Harvard did. They lost, of course.

I agree, with those two in the game, I think we really had a good shot at the title. But after that, it would be a long drought. . . , not until 2008 that Stanford got back to the final 4.

RE: Women's Basketball Recruiting (Class of 2022+; split May 2021) - BobK - 10-20-2021

Nygaard coached in the wnba this past season. Both she and Folkl were both injured the week of the Harvard game.

Nygaard has been or maybe still is the AD at Winward

Yes, thanks.  I knew that.  Just incorrectly stated "in" game, instead of prior to.
I really liked that team - Flores at PG, iirc, and some other really good (and underappreciated players).

Nygaard is also still the Head Coach at Windward

Oh, Kristin FOLKL!  My favorite Stanford athlete (and collegiate athlete) of all time.  She was responsible for me finally following the Stanford WVB team starting in 1994, after having already been following their WBB team since their first championship season in 1989-90 (during the latter half of my 2-year work stint at IBM Menlo Park/San Jose).

Early on in FOLKL's storied Stanford WBB/WVB career, I had already compared her with Natalie WILLIAMS of UCLA, the only other athlete other than FOLKL to be honored as 1st Team AA in both basketball and volleyball.

Although I only saw her play live for Stanford WBB and WVB a few times (since I was living in the Portland OR area at that time, from 1992-2007), I had the privilege of watching her frequently play live for the now defunct Portland Fire of the WNBA from 2000-2002.

Here's a great summary tribute to the athletic career of the great Kristin FOLKL:

RE: Women's Basketball Recruiting (Class of 2022+; split May 2021) - BostonCard - 10-20-2021

Stanford probably still had the talent to beat Harvard, but just hadn't processed the loss of two of their best players.  But it was a pretty deep team, especially in the post.  In addition to Folkl, Stanford had Olympia Scott and Naomi Mulitauaopele, both of them seniors.  And, as mentioned, on top of Nygaard at Guard, Milena Flores was the PG, one of the more underrated Stanford guards (she still stands third all-time in career assists behind Henning and Azzi).

Returning to the topic of current WBB recruiting, I'm amazed (and puzzled, at the same time) at how Prospect Nation seem to be ahead of the others in knowing and publishing the commitments of top recruits.

First, we have the case of Talana LEPOLO, who they already proclaimed as a Stanford commit almost 4 weeks ago.  Even ESPN, our primary source here,  has yet to update their 2022 list about this.

Then now, I see that a week ago, they already published that #13 overall 6'3 PF/C Ashlyn WATKINS has committed to South Carolina (which was to be expected, anyway, as she lives near the South Carolina campus).  Even the South Carolina WBB discussion forum has yet to confirm this, although some of them think that she is a silent commit.

And while Lauren BETTS is and has been the concensus #1 overall recruit from the Class of 2022 for all the other WBB recruiting services (ESPN, ASGR, Blue Star, etc) for some time now, Prospect Nation still lists her as a 4.5 star recruit, meaning she's not even a Top 10 recruit.  What's up with that, Chris Hansen?

maybe, but allison feaster was the leading scorer in the country that year. i remember watching her 3s clang of the rim in warm-ups and thinking, we can handle her. then the game started and, suddenly, her 3's all went in. she scored 35 on us. vanessa would have been defending her.

RE: Women's Basketball Recruiting (Class of 2022+; split May 2021) - 81alum - 10-20-2021

Yes, there really are days when a single good player having a ridiculously good day can beat the other team whatever talent it might have.  Feister certainly comes to mind, but so too does our own McPhee against Oregon, and I remember well Alexis Gray-Lawson--scoring a career high 37 points to beat us in 2009.  There are those days that someone just "goes off" and becomes unstoppable.  If these players could play in that same zone every game, they would be superstars, but they can't, and so they aren't.  But they are talented enough to play like a superstar every so often, and you wonder if you could only bottle it and pour it out at will.

We were at that game against Oregon when McPhee went off -- sitting in the stands at Matt Knight (ugh, hate that floor), and Oregon fans kept saying "WHO IS that!"  Despite the fact that she was known to be good, no one expected her to be THAT good. She couldn't miss, even with her "how did that go in" shots.

Beating my own drum lol I saw MCPhee play a number of travel games and raced about her. So tough what a great finisher. Believe she is now in med school
