The University of California is so much more than sports. After hundreds of days on campus doing stories about research, medicine, chemistry, physics and being teargassed multiple times nobody there ever brings up athletics.

I'm interested to see how schools recruiting against USCLA do when time to experience on campus life is considered a priority for a recruit.
This is an excellent point. Students at major universities, by the way, overwhelmingly hated online instruction, and longed for the in-person experience. Being deprived of that won't be a net plus for many student-athletes. I could see this helping Cal recruit against UCLA for certain kinds of students, especially in non football sports that play more often than once a week. It could be devastating for Cori Close, for example.

Of course they did exercise their oversight, they just ended up coming to a decision you disagree with (as do I, and apparently many UCLA students, athletes and alums).
An interesting sidelight is that I have heard about lots of disagreement with the switch among the UCLA people but almost none from SC.

While completely true, it seems to be strangely coupled with a brobdingnagian new demand to have courses offered online (or both in-person and online).
It's hard to grasp the logic of, "I hated that online stuff, it was a complete ripoff - how dare you not let me take the next course online"

That's because SC people aren't smart enough to understand why it's a bad deal for them... ;)

I heard the same about webinars. Supposedly people hated them, got sick of them, didn't want to see or participate in them...and yet, I have 8x people sign up for (and 10x attend) webinars vs. in-person events.

John Ourand at Sports Business Journal predicts that in 2023 the P12/P10 will sell most of its media rights to Amazon because they will pay more than ESPN.
https://sportsbusinessjournal.com/Journal/Issues/2022/12/19/Insiders/sports-media.aspx
Quote:ESPN will be prepared to split the Pac-12’s media rights with Amazon, but will not offer the conference significantly more than it pays for the Big 12. That will lead the Pac-12 to sell almost its entire media package to Amazon for a price that is slightly higher than what the Big 12 gets from ESPN and Fox. The Pac-12 will carve out a handful of prime-time football games that it then will sell to CBS.

I can harmonize these seemingly contradictory points.
(1) people don't learn as well when they take classes purely online.
(2) online classes are very convenient and make getting a degree far easier for someone who either: (a) is sufficiently motivated/independent to learn in that more challenging environment; or (b) gets value from having the piece of paper saying they graduated, so that learning all the material with a high level of understanding isn't a must have requirement.

What about Colorado games? "Watch Coach Prime tonight on Prime! It's Prime Time in Colorado!"
Distribution on Amazon Prime would be WAY better than Pac-12 Network. A less extreme view is that Amazon (or, less appealingly, Apple) will receive roughly the inventory that Pac-12 Network currently receives, and the rest of the games will continue to be aired on linear TV. That would be a big step up, in my opinion.
In addition, the streamers need Pac-12 Network's production capability and might well receive it as part of the deal. They aren't set up to produce the games themselves.

The NFL currently streams on Amazon Prime. They are ready to jump into college football.

I confess I don't know what Amazon Prime is. Would it cost me more than my current cable subscription which includes Pac 12 Networks? And would they do a package which includes all the non-football sports that Pac 12 Networks cover, or would it be a revenue-sports only deal? And which side of the "revenue-sports" do they put WBB? And could I get it on my TV via cable or would it only work on my computer via internet?
Sorry for my dumb questions, I am not media savvy in the slightest degree.

Free two day shipping on all your orders. That in and of itself makes it worthwhile (especially if the wife pays for it). Great for last minute shopping for those of us delinquent in playing Santa. The TV stuff is an added bonus.

I think it's like 99 bucks/year? And you get some streaming content with it similar to Netflix.
I agree that the built in Pac12 Network production capability is what makes this a possibility. Amazon can handle the distribution just fine.
If they bid the highest I think it would be great, would be able to easily watch games on any device of mine while home or traveling.
81alum, you would need an internet connection, and an internet capable TV or TV connected to a device that can connect to internet. Smartphone or computer would work too. Would not be a channel on your cable or satellite.

That may be a mistake. ESPN isn’t the juggernaut it was a decade ago but it’s still the premier option. You want them to own your rights so they hype you up in their million talk shows. Having no presence on ESPN severely hampered the NHL for many years. It may be better to take a bit less money for the exposure.

True but for other major networks. Ones you can turn the TV on and navigate to and flip channels. No one opens their prime video app unless there is a specific thing they plan to watch a specific thing. Much like . . . The pac 12 now app.

LAX to BWI is 4 hr 50 min non-stop (6 hr on the way back due to the jetstream) while LAX to Eugene is 2 hr 20 min and LAX to PDX is 2 hr 30 min. Moreover the 3 hour time zone difference means that the whole day is pretty much shot.

News of the Day: Disney to spin off ESPN and ABC. ESPN will then develop a streaming service independent of Disney. The process should be completed by the end of 2023.
How will this impact ESPN’s plans to purchase the rights to broadcast college sports?
