"For the life of me, why Tara allowed that to continue is beyond me. I'm wondering was that deliberate, choosing not to run up the score but give the visitors something to cheer about?"

Yes deliberate Why not Or better to really show the other team up? Goodness

Yes, S&P, there are quite a lot of comments on the Dominican thread.  You and I made many similar observations--great minds and all ;)

I can never understand that. How is it "showing the other team up" if you are playing only your bench players and let them play normally? I'm fine with waiting until the shot clock winds down before running a play, but just heaving up random three pointers and then playing no defense?

Personally I hate it whenever I play sports or games and my opponents decide to let up because they felt sorry for me and didn't want to embarrass me, that closer ending score doesn't mean anything to me if those extra few points are because my opponents went easy.

100% agree. Give the other team your best. You can slow the game down, but still try your hardest.

Yes, they were on the game thread here:

We generally have a game thread for each game.

Agree as well.  The problem was the people Tara had on the court for extended minutes were NOT giving their best.  They played as individuals. There was no teamwork and Dominican took advantage.  Good for them.

UCLA is extending an invitation for season ticket holders and donors to travel on the UCLA team charter and stay at the team hotel for 3 away games.

UCLA @ Arkansas; WBB Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase (Mohegan Sun Resort)- UCLA vs. Florida State & Utah vs. South Carolina and UCLA @ Ohio State.

The Utah-South Carolina is so intriguing that I might do that one.  Just wanted to share news about other PAC-12 programs and what they're doing to promote support.  The Bruins' fan base is not as large as ours, but there are signs of growth and Cori's openness in trying new things is positive.

That is a very interesting idea. I have never heard of a program doing that before. I think if Stanford offered the same deal, there would be some interest. Maybe a way for UCLA to offset some travel expenses? Think 30-40 additional people/fans riding on the plan and paying for a portion for their airfare? A way to fill up some unused seats on the charter plane with paying loyal fans.

UCLA athletic department finances are so deep in the RED I wonder what the stroke$ will be for those paying loyal fan$?

The total package price for fans (flying, hotel, game tickets, etc.) is $2,500/person per trip.

Article in Sunday, Nov 5 (today) SF Chron about Stanford women and Cam in particular, the role that she's going to be playing for the team, etc. Interesting bit, first public hint from Cam that she might consider staying for her Covid year (she says it's a 50-50 decision for her right now). Wow, if she did staty!

Hope playing pro locally means Cam stays.
Just read the story guessing from her words possible maybe not the 50/50 she says. But certainly good to hear

RE: WBB 2023-2024 Season - crackpot - 11-05-2023

Does anyone know if the chalktalks will start this Wednesday? I couldn't find anything on the FBC page.

I’m sure they are but we will get the notice this week

RE: WBB 2023-2024 Season - CompSci87 - 11-05-2023

Folks, especially stopandpop, please don't keep starting new threads titled "WBB 2023-2024 Season". The board doesn't automatically merge them.

I've just merged the three threads we had with that title .

Feel free to either post to this thread, or to start a new thread about any specific topic you think deserves its own thread, including WBB topics.

RE: WBB 2023-2024 Season - Hoops9092 - 11-06-2023

For anyone interested, there's several good games on TV today.

10am Notre Dame vs. South Carolina on ESPN
11am USC vs. Ohio State on TruTV
4:30pm LSU vs. Colorado on TNT
5:30pm UCLA vs. Purdue on Pac-12

Going to be interesting to see the freshman we missed on, Hidalgo on Notre Dame and Juju on USC. Also curious to see Betts on UCLA, Paopao on South Carolina, the new look LSU team, and Celeste Taylor on Ohio State.

RE: WBB 2023-2024 Season - Lorcan - 11-06-2023

Our future conference mate and this season's non-conference foe, Duke, is off to a decent start against Richmond up 39-25 at the half. They have 12 points thus far from a freshman, Oluchi Okananwa. For those of us who have been around the block, we'll remember that Kennedy Brown used to play at Oregon State. She's off to a rough start this morning offensively, but she's contributed 4 rebounds and 2 blocks thus far. Richmond should finish in the top half of the Atlantic 10, so it's a decent test for this team.

I'll be curious to see how Butler and Iowa State shakes out, especially given all the departures at Iowa State (Ashley Joens graduating, Lexi Donarski transferring, and Emily Ryan being out with an illness). For those in Sacramento, they may notice that Isnelle Natabou, formerly of Sacramento State, is now suiting up for the Cyclones. Iowa State should win, but it's worth noting that Butler is on an upward trajectory.

After that, we can settle in to the viewing of Notre Dame and South Carolina in Paris before figuring out how the rest of the day goes.

RE: WBB 2023-2024 Season - Jskass - 11-06-2023

if only Hannah Hidalgo had come to Stanford and had a real big (or two) to pass the ball to -- rather than her being responsible for 1/2 her team's scoring today vs. South Carolina...

RE: WBB 2023-2024 Season - Lorcan - 11-06-2023

You could say the same about JuJu Watkins in her efforts against USC as she has nearly half the teams points and has watched the Trojans erase a big deficit to take the lead after getting in foul trouble.

Hidalgo is great and possibly a game changer for the Domers. But to be honest, after seeing the boxscore (and her 10-24 FG stat line), I wonder whether she'd be a great fit for Tara. It's fairly rare for Stanford players to attempt 20+ shots in a game, because Tara doesn't like hero ball. And the few times it's happened (during Chiney, McPhee, and Alanna Smith's senior years), it's usually been during eras where our starting lineups were offensively challenged. Brink is a pre-season All-American, and even she has only ever attempted 20+ shots twice while in a Cardinal uniform...
