This guy has several other major conference offers.  Bring 'em on campus and find out how good he can become.  How many of us thought Josh Mauro, Ben Gardner, or David Parry would be an all-conference contributor?  Guys who work hard have a chance, especially considering the current status of the DL depth chart.

So from one of new interviews Caughfey is a DE only Reynolds is his recruiting coach. He has been talking to Stanford for a year now. Weighs 245 runs 4.7-4.8

My uninformed guess is he has not heard back from admissions yet. Notice he didn't state a new date and could commit at any time (read: when he gets the fat envelope).

Yep, that was my assumption, too.  In fact, it almost seemed like he was trying to butter up the coaches and admissions office.  

Don’t get me wrong - I actually admire his approach. I am not above it. It’s an important life skill.

Yeah, a linebacker!  Stanford has quietly moved up to the #3 class in the Pac-12 (per 24/7), within fractions of a point of USC (though they have fewer recruits).  I should quote the concern trolls from a few months ago for kicks and giggles.

Hudson reminds me a bit of Alston.  a bit undersized (lowest numbers I've seen 6'1" and 193) with some good burst off the edge.

During the 2021 and 2022 recruiting cycles, 1/3 of the football recruits so far are outside the top 1000, no football recruits so far are in the top 100, and neither of the QBs is a 4-star. There are more positive ways to frame the situation, and it’s plainly true that Stanford still recruits in the top half (really top third) of the conference. But the situation is not what it was 5 year ago, that’s for sure.

Very fair criticism.  If you go by players in the Top 200 in the country, an admittedly arbitrary cutoff point, the trend has been as follows:
2014 - 6
2015 - 2
2016 - 4
2017 - 8 
2018 - 0
2019 - 5
2020 - 3
2021 - 0
2022 - 0

We were regularly pulling 5-star guys or 4-star guys in the top 100 a few years back, and now any 4-star recruits are just lower on the list (200-300).  You can still win with high 3-star guys like Walter Rouse, Kyu Blu Kelly, and Nathaniel Peat - but it's even better when you have a mix of "can't miss" guys like Walker Little, Davis Mills, Solomon Thomas, or Colby Parkinson, combined with some 3-star guys that are under-appreciated or just needed more time to develop.  We aren't getting any of those "can't miss" 5-star or high 4-star types in the last couple classes.

Another way to look at this recruiting class is to speculate a bit about where it will end up.  Right now, 247sports says that 9 uncommitted recruits are "warm" regarding Stanford.  Even if Shaw were to keep all the current commits and land all 9 of those recruits, then Stanford's total points for 247sports' team ranking system still would be below Stanford's score in 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2020.  Take away any of the top 3 remaining recruits with the "warm" designation (Bailey, Ramsey, and Cooper), and the class would be comparable to 2010, 2011, or 2015 (though a bit ahead of those classes).  Although Stanford really does need a big recruiting class following the abject failure of 2021, I'd be satisfied with a class that retains the current commits and adds any 8 of those 9 recruits.  Narrowly beating out the 2010, 2011, and 2015 classes actually would seem like a win considering the current state of the program.  Of course, a virtual clean sweep like that does not seem likely, especially considering the top 3 recruits I mentioned all are in the top 150, and Shaw hasn't landed one such recruit yet in 2021 or 2022.  But hope remains eternal.

I would not put much stock in the 24/7 temperatures.  Some recruits are "warm" to a bunch of different programs; some are pretty much "cold" to everyone.  I'm fairly certain we won't sign all the players are "warm" to Stanford, and we are likely to sign some players who are not.

Results are all that matter. But it's becoming clear that for some reason Stanford is unable to land the top guys like Luck, Murphy and Peat anymore. Shaw, Eubanks and co., Admissions?

A few things.  First, Shaw was slow in adapting to the earlier calendar. His reluctance to bring in visitors before the early commitment period has hurt us. In addition, we are less successful than we were in the first half of the 2010’s; kids being recruited now were 10 the last time we went to a Rose Bowl. Also, I think the pandemic has hurt Stanford more than other schools, because we recruit nationally, and many student-athletes have responded to the pandemic by staying closer to home.

As far as I know, admissions has not hurt us any more than usual.

I agree with all of the above, but especially your point about the dearth of major bowl appearances in the last 10 years. I think one reality with Stanford is the program is always just a few mediocre (not even bad) seasons away from doubts being raised in the minds of recruits about the long-term strength of the program. OTOH, programs like USC and Notre Dame can go through extended down periods and scandals and still always seem to be on the cusp of a renaissance. Basically, to keep gathering truly excellent recruiting classes, Stanford is under extra pressure to maintain not just a good, but a great record, nearly every year.
