It's a MLB thread.  The Giants often get traction around these parts, but you asking for it doesn't mean it will happen.

In the meantime, who was the last MLB pitcher to have an inside-the-park home run?

Jose Reyes with 131 triples retired in 2017. Steve Finley with 124 began his career in the 90’s and retired in 2007.

Played a year for the Giants OF.

Plus OF, why don’t you say something about the Giants if you have something. Ramos hit two dingers Sunday and Luciano is wowing with defense although overpowered at the plate so far.

Yeah, but the question was "of the players who appeared in the 21st century" and Lofton retired after the 2007 season.  He retired with 116 triples, so also close, but Bob closer.  When Lofton retired, it was the first time since 1885 that there were no active players with 100 triples, which lasted until 2010, when Crawford hit his 100th triple.  Two years later, Reyes hit his 100th triple.  Since he retired after the 2018 season, MLB has had no active player with 100 career triples.  Dexter Fouler is the active career leader with 82, so it may be a while before the next 100 triple player, if ever.

Ruth was an amazing athlete.  You don’t the reach the level of success he achieved by being “fat and slow”.

As has been mentioned before, triples are a product of field size more than anything else.  The record holders are mostly early vintage players. Heck, even Triples Alley at Oracle Park has been reduced in size.....

OF, you need to google Randy Elliott.    Seriously, Ramos is definitely a key piece of the Giants’ future but he will probably spend this year playing in Richmond and/or Sacramento.

Randy's problem was that he had a damaged shoulder which kept him out of baseball for 1 1/2 seasons.  He persuaded the Giants to give him a look and Hank Sauer fell in love with him, thought he was the next Roy Hobbs.  In 1977 spring training, he hit .543 (29 for 53) with 18 extra base hits. In his first at-bat of the regular season, he was hit on his damaged shoulder by Dodger Doug Rau.  That was it for Elliott.

You're right, Yankee stadium Dimensions were 281 feet to the left field line, 415 feet to left, 490 feet to left center, 487 feet to center, 429 feet to right center, 344 feet to right, and 295 feet down the right field line.  Gloves weren't so great back then either, or the quality of the fields.

In answer to my question, Ruth hit 136 triples, with a season high of 16 in 1921 at the age of 26.  The most triples Henderson ever had was 7 in a season.  His career total was 66, less than half of Ruth's total.  Ruth met or exceeded Henderson's season high ten times.

Rickey didn't hit a lot of doubles, either.  He had 510 for his career, but never had more than 33 in a season, only hitting 30 or more five times in a 25 year career.

Randy Elliott.  I think he hit about .450 that spring.  About .220 in the regular season. Then gone.

Big difference is Ramos is a top prospect and 21.  Still, I suspect you are right.  He will play most of the year in Richmond and/or Sac.  He, maybe more than any other Giant prospect, suffered from no minor leagues last year. 450- 500 plate appearances at AA would have made a difference.

I am hoping he makes the Giants decision on him coming North a little difficult.  Giants are very short on right handed hitting outfielders. Particularly with Slater hurt.  Again. He just can’t stay on the field.  It must be very frustrating for him.  

On the negative side prospect wise, Luciano is struggling.  To say the least. He is having a hard time making contact.  But he’s 19.  He may be at SJ this year.  I think they still have SJ as their High A affiliate.

Edit: SJ is now low-A. High A is In Eugene.

The things we learn here. I had no idea Hank Sauer was a scout with Giants that late in his life. I played golf behind him 1958 or 59. Sauer and three other Giants and I got to talk a couple of times when on the same tee waiting at Crystal Springs. I looked him up and see he died playing golf in Burlingame which could have been Crystal Springs

Almost all of the career leaders in triples started their careers before 1920. The top players in career triples are:

309 Sam Crawford
295 Ty Cobb
252 Honus Wagner
244 Jake Beckley
233 Roger Conner
222 Tris Speaker

Among the top 50 players in career triples, I spotted only two in the post-WWII era  -- Stan Musial (19th, 177 triples) and Roberto Clemente (27th, 166 triples).

Among players who were active in the 1970s or later, the leaders in career triples are:

166 Roberto Clemente
147 Willie Wilson
141 Lou Brock
140 Willie Mays
138 Willie Davis
137 George Brett
135 Pete Rose
131 Brett Butler
131 Jose Reyes
127 Vada Pinson

Besides being a great hitter, Clemente played most of his career with Forbes Field  as his home.  Expansive outfield.
