SF needed that deep fly to the wall the batter before (with runner on third). Instead, it's a pop out.
Another (frustrating) example of inability to manufacture runs. (And if we're being honest, SF's last run was a complete gift from St. Louis).
Still, I like the battle till the end. I just wish they'd score more runs when they "should" (i.e., runner on second with no outs; runner on third with less than 2 outs).

I think if you go number hunting across baseball, you will find the Giants are far from alone. Situational hitting is not valued. It’s all about the launch angle.
Giants may be a bit worse than average. Not sure. I do know they are scoring about half their runs as a result of HR’s. They lead the lead in that category. Double edge sword in my way of thinking.

Giants are T2 in runs scored in the NL. Focus on home runs or not, they're doing something right.

Fundamentally, I think they're weak in manufacturing runs - it's seemingly homer or bust for this squad. [With exception, so far anyway, of tonight's 3 runs - in game where Giants down by 3 in B8]. And looking at this roster, I don't think that's a sustainable road to the division title (or even a playoff spot), n/w/s that Analytics tells you that is always the best strategy.
BTW, if tonight's score holds, then the Giants will be 3-5 in their last 8 games (which includes 2 Ls when Gausman started and pitched very well). Danger, Will Robinson!
Four wins in their last six games. Wins by 7, 3, 3 and 1 runs. Losses by 2 and 1 runs. Still pretty happy about the team with the best record in baseball...

Indeed. I understand the appeal of smallball as a fan, but the measured correlation between a team's "Guillen Number" (the percentage of runs scored via home runs) and winning games is strongly positive, and the correlation actually increases during the playoffs. Manufacturing runs is hard; while it may not be aesthetically pleasing to everyone the best path to the playoffs lies in the Giants continuing to do what they are doing.

This weekend shaping up to be pretty big. Both DeSclafani and Gausman going; no Scherzer; Nats leaking oil a bit.

Yesterday another good example - bases juiced and no outs: Dickerson Ks; Crawford pops out to 3B; and then Vosler comes up "big" . . . with a HBP. Fly out by Duggar. One (gift) run.
In B8, Slater with a single; followed by Ruf with PH 2 run dinger.
Out, out, out.
That just encapsulates the Giants this year.

I don't think that a power-oriented offense necessarily precludes situational hitting at specific times, but in the current baseball environment it's usually necessary to produce big innings in order to win games. Consistently putting together a series of contact-oriented, manufactured single scores is not feasible, and consistently protecting small leads over multiple innings is not realistic either. In your example, with the bases loaded and no outs you have the opportunity to score a lot of runs and you need to try to do that. You can't rely on a squeeze play or a sacrifice fly to score a run and then have Koufax shut out your opponent the rest of the way. Of course sometimes instead of scoring a bunch of runs you end up with none, but that's the price for those three and four run innings that give your pitchers sufficient margin of error and put the pressure on your opponent to score a lot of runs in response.

Hard to predict how things will unfold at this point but for the record I'll say Colton Cowser, a centerfielder from Sam Houston State, if he's available.
btw Chandler is viewed as a pitcher by MLB teams and is also a Clemson football commit as a QB, will be interesting to see what happens with him. I'm mostly focused on Braden Montgomery, he would be a definite first rounder absent his Stanford commitment, an important player to keep for our program. If he's unexpectedly drafted high I assume it means that he's reached an agreement with that team.

Friday nights game was one of my favorites of the year. Lot of action, balls in play. I love watching Crawford play SS. The diving stop to start the DP was a great play. His turn, the quickness of the exchange and perfect rifle throw on the DP with bases loaded was even better.

One helluva "first half" of the season for the Gyros.
And normally, I'm not big on uniform gimmicks; however, I find the White and Orange G unis very sharp. (Of course, I also like the Orange Friday unis and the all black tops). Maybe I am big on uniform gimmicks . . .
