Regardless of how this season plays out, next year:
Since Garappolo is no longer under contract, shake hands and wish him well.
#1 Lance
#2 Purdy

That seems to make the most sense to me.

If Purdy keeps playing like a boss don’t see why we wouldn’t at least have it be a competition in camp. Trey hasn’t shown us enough to be a guaranteed starter, sunk cost notwithstanding. In a vacuum you want Trey to seize the job since he may have the higher ceiling but if Brock wins a Super Bowl you can’t just not give him a shot.

I would expect a Shanahan offense designed for Lance and a Shanahan offense designed for Purdy would not look much alike. Ditto when transitioning from Lance to Garappolo as we saw earlier this year. For comparison, the transition from Garappolo to Purdy wasn't as much of a shift and went smoothly.
I wonder how much style/skill-set matters when picking your 3-deep at QB?

Hey Frenchy... you are correct. The new system will a lot the bye only to the #1 seed. I was thinking the old way.
HOWEVER, it means that if the Niners win the first week (and have the #2 seed) I get an additional payday.

Oh yeah. Says who? Purdy played 46 games in college. What did Lance play in FCS? Maybe 16 or 17. Kyle is going to play his best QB regardless of draft stature. So far Lance has done nothing but get hurt three times. He could be Kinlaw's cousin.

Why Lance over Purdy?
I am tired of watching QB’s who can’t throw a deep pass accurately.
Purdy is a great spot guy but making him a regular is just continuing the Garappolo era with a different name.
Lance was brought in because he can pass the ball effectively and is mobile. He is the guy I want behind center.

I have no idea what Lance can do. Frankly nobody does. Purdy has played very well in 2 1/2 games. But we’ve seen this kind of thing before. Maybe he can sustain it, maybe he can’t. So, I’m not ready to make any judgments. I will say this however, Purdy is very different from Garoppolo. Much more mobile. Much more able to make plays when things break down.
I love watching quarterbacks with cannons. I was a h.u.g.e. John Elway fan. But if you look at things honestly, having a cannon is down the list of importance for playing the position. Particularly today. In terms of skills - Accuracy is No 1. Mobility 2. Arm strength a distant third. Particularly in the 49ers scheme. Hell they rarely pass more than 15 yards downfield. They’re passing game is all about yards after catch. Accuracy being the key.

You can't do that to Lance. If you want him to be the starter you have to wait until Purdy blows it. If you just hand the job to Lance next year, the fans will be screaming for Purdy after every mistake Lance makes.

And you've seen Lance consistently hit the deep ball when?

Lance is a myth. Purdy is reality. My mom was born in Missouri.
“Show me” to Lance. Right now he has shown me diddly f***.

I saw a video of Brock Purdy's trainer on YouTube speaking to how he actually improved the velocity on his throws by 5 MPH since leaving Iowa State. We hear a lot about Pitchers increasing their velocity with biomechanics training, but the speed gun isn't used to judge QBs like it is Pitchers.
Consequently, we don't hear about QBs increasing the velocity of their football throwing very much. Instead, the QB is observed throwing in college, and however strong the arm demonstrates it is, that's considered what it is. So one of the most fascinating things about this interview with Purdy's trainer was that he said it's rare that velocity increases at all after a QB is in High School. It might be that this is because there is a difference between what is considered throwing mechanics for accuracy and whatever subtle changes are needed to generate additional velocity.
In any case, it is an objective reality that Brock Purdy now throws the ball with more velocity than he did when NFL scouts evaluated his college performance. It stands to reason that if he threw the ball in college like he is throwing it now he well could have been drafted higher, and not by the Niners. Is Purdy going to throw the ball as hard as Lance? Probably not, but as Joe Montana demonstrated, quick feet, decision making, and accuracy are all more important traits than arm strength.

IIRC, Purdy also tended to throw a lot of interceptions, 33 at Iowa State. Also, he had excellent freshman and sophomore seasons, but pedestrian junior and senior seasons. He was considered short, immobile (yup), slow (by NFL combine standards, a 4.84 40) mechanically unsound with a long windup. NFL.com rated him a priority UDFA, with a 5.57 rating. Basically, he was considered best for a Shanahan-style offense, so he ended up in the right place.

And the Dolts blow a 33-0 halftime lead to lose in OT to the Vikings, keeping the Vikes in the second playoff spot. Just another Saturday in the park. . . .See ya, Jeff.

Good article in Chron about how McCaffreys presence opened up things for both Kittle TDS and the big pass to Kroft.
Also, how good is Shanahan? He’s playing with a third string 7th round pick. And he was hurting Thursday. So, it limited what they could do in passing game. 26 passes. Average throw traveled 6.4 yards past LOS. Only 7 went over 10 yards. Yeah they were able to have a solid, far from spectacular but solid, offensive performance. McCaffrey had a lot to do with that. But Shanahan’s ability to get receivers open on a condensed field where they still have room to run after the catch is quite special.

Probably would be called Coltin’ it, no?
Saturday kind of proves my point about great players only sometimes making good coaches.
In other news, without Lamar Jackson, Greg Roman’s offense scored 3 points.

I love The Sickos. Former "Onion" guys. Got the tee-shirt.
A backup to Lance? NFW! If Purdy leads a SB victory in February, he
STARTS in September.
