How will this impact ESPN’s plans to purchase the rights to broadcast college sports?

Is this true? Or just a prediction/forecast? I can only find analysts debating whether or not it's a good idea for Disney.

My bad.  The article had a misleading headline and the rest was behind a paywall. I should have checked for a corroborating story before posting here. Anyway, you are correct - still speculation…….

RE: End of Pac12? - OutsiderFan - 12-20-2022

Well, I heard John Skipper interviewed by Dan Le Batard early in the year and he said he could see Disney selling ESPN off. And then he said he could see Apple buying Disney too. So these kinds of moves wouldn't be surprising to people in the big media biz.

RE: End of Pac12? - Phogge - 12-20-2022

Prime has movies, both free and for rent. It does have some series with fairly good production values including “Rogue Heros” about the origin of “The Boys From Hereford,”
“Outer Range,” “Jack Ryan” and ”The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”

The future is streaming. I wonder how long the NFL rule of network broadcasting ESPN and Amazon games to each of the markets of the teams involved will last.

https://sportsbusinessjournal.com/Journal/Issues/2022/12/19/Insiders/sports-media.aspx

Quote:ESPN will be prepared to split the Pac-12’s media rights with Amazon, but will not offer the conference significantly more than it pays for the Big 12. That will lead the Pac-12 to sell almost its entire media package to Amazon for a price that is slightly higher than what the Big 12 gets from ESPN and Fox. The Pac-12 will carve out a handful of prime-time football games that it then will sell to CBS.

That may be a mistake. ESPN isn’t the juggernaut it was a decade ago but it’s still the premier option. You want them to own your rights so they hype you up in their million talk shows. Having no presence on ESPN severely hampered the NHL for many years. It may be better to take a bit less money for the exposure.

The Big Ten said no thanks to the Sports Leader and I’m sure they will do just fine….

The NFL is in "advanced talks" with YouTube for NFL Sunday ticket:

That's still not a significant difference. When you're on the road you're on the road. Whether you're going to play Oregon or Michigan a few hours don't matter that much, it's a business trip.

A few trips a year does not substantially change your on-campus experience.

As posted earlier in this thread, a lot of Big 10 cities have small airports and no non-stops from LAX. Fine for charters, but painful for commercial. On a good day, the connections will add at least a couple of hours to the trip if flying commercial. On a bad day, snow, ice, thunderstorms, etc. can wreak havoc.

I don't like the idea that a "student athlete" is going to be away from campus as much as these trips will require. OTOH, perhaps they should get used to it. I am virtually certain many people on this board have experienced horrible travel requirements in their job that have actively interfered with them getting work done back at the office. You just have to learn how to cope with it and prioritize what gets done when. Could be good training. Does it change the "college experience"? Absolutely. Maybe that isn't "bad".

Big Ten commissioner Warren is a serious candidate for CEO of Chicago Bears. Prior to the Big Ten, he was COO of the Vikings.

Kevin Warren has been hired today as CEO of the Bears.

Warren was hired by the Big Ten 3 1/2 years ago. During his tenure, 12 of the 14 schools have hired new presidents.

behind a paywall at the Athletic speculation on possible replacements for Warren include...

Quote:Stanford athletic director Bernard Muir: Muir’s predecessor at Stanford was Bob Bowlsby, who left the Farm to become the Big 12 commissioner a little over a decade ago. Could Muir do the same, but for the Big Ten? He has overseen the most successful stretch in school history, with 28 NCAA championships won and 37 national titles overall. Stanford has won the Learfield Directors’ Cup seven times during Muir’s 11-year tenure, which would likely impress the presidents and chancellors in a conference that prides itself on sponsoring and succeeding in a wide variety of Olympic sports.

We've only lost the Directors' Cup 3 times.  Once in '93-'94 and the last two awards.  So, during Muir's time at Stanford we've lost twice.

Isn't it better to say that after 25 consecutive wins, under Muir's directorship Stanford has lost the Directors' Cup 2 consecutive times?

Perhaps a small amount of help for Stanford?

https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/ncaa-council-votes-to-limit-eligibility-for-second-time-transfers-to-curb-ballooning-portal-usage/

The NCAA Division I Council approved legislation on Wednesday to limit waivers for second-time transfers. Now, undergraduate players who transfer will have specific guidelines they must meet in order to be eligible for immediate playing time starting with the 2023-24 season or risk sitting out a year in between transfers.

The new rules are an attempt to rein in the number of players using transfer portal, which has exploded since it launched four years ago. Nearly 2,000 players in FBS alone entered the portal in the first transfer window following the 2022 regular season. At least 120 quarterbacks alone have entered the portal...

The new NCAA rule only applies to undergraduate transfers. Players who graduate will still be eligible to play immediately at their next stops.

Perhaps this is what Tara was referring to in an earlier interview.  I hope this brings transfer rates down to a reasonable level.  But do I understand this correctly that these restrictions only apply to a second (or higher) transfer?

RE: End of Pac12? - burger - 03-04-2023

Thought I'd dig up the old thread instead of starting a new one..

The Big 12 is going after Arizona, ASU, Utah, and Colorado (plus Gonzaga): https://theathletic.com/4271149/2023/03/03/big-12-pac-12-realignment-news/

Quote:Sources briefed on the discussions say the conference has been in recent contact with the so-called Four Corners schools — Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah — which has renewed optimism that convincing them to join is possible.

Brett Yormark has eyed westward expansion since the day he was hired as the Big 12’s new commissioner last summer. Yormark has never been shy about his interest in expanding the Big 12 into the “fourth time zone” to establish a truly national conference and boost the value of his league’s media rights. The arrival of BYU this summer will get the Big 12 into the Mountain Time Zone. Yormark wants more, though he has always said any additions need to be additive and not dilutive.

“I don’t think any of us are trying to dismantle the Pac-12,” Baylor athletic director Mack Rhoades told SicEm365 on Tuesday. “If there’s opportunity, and whenever their TV media deal comes to fruition and if those institutions decide that it’s not good for them, then the Big 12 will be ready. And that probably is as simple as I can say it.”
So if the numbers for the P-10's next media deal are not great (a likely scenario), the Big 12 is going to pounce.

Geographically and culturally, this makes more sense than most of the other Pac-10 expansion / Pac-10 poaching proposals I've heard.  It would be a homecoming of sorts for Colorado.  And it would also be a near-worst-case scenario for Stanford and the remaining west-coast schools.

RE: End of Pac12? - OutsiderFan - 03-04-2023

Oregon, Washington, Stanford, and Cal better figure something out quick. You can't be viable as a conference if 6 of your 12 teams leave.

I doubt Washington has much to worry about.   They have the most robust football season ticket numbers in the conference and decent support in by citizens in the state.   Their campus is also close to a major hub which helps a lot for those sports that don't enjoy charter flights all season.

Oregon has Nike and a raucous stadium environment that's great for TV.   Some conference will take them.

The rest of the Pac-12 schools (WSU, OSU, Cal and Stanford) are in trouble.  Cal and Stanford don't really deliver numbers in their media market but at least offer a nice destination for visiting fans.  And have major airports for Olympic sports teams.

WSU and OSU are clearly in jeopardy with the next round of musical chairs, but I don't love Cal or Stanford's place in this game.

If you game this out a bit, it was always quite logical that ASU, UofA, Utah and Colorado should jump before they are left in a conference without Oregon and Washington.   Their negotiating position is better now than it will be later.   Sometimes these deals include slow steps in the share of TV revenue the newbies get, so best to negotiate before it is very apparent you need a new home.
