Shohei Ohtani is the next superstar SF Giants fans can dream of (sfgate.com)
And speaking of Ohtani...everyone's aware of Kyle Harrison (who is pitching today, btw). You may not be aware of Keaton Winn, turning heads in spring training. He struck out Ohtani and got Trout to ground out. He lost three years due to COVID and Tommy John surgery, but he can throw in triple digits. He's only thrown 278 innings since he was drafted in 2018. Fastball, split finger, slider.

The catcher that nobody wanted, Blake Sabol is 3/5 with a home run and two doubles.

And Joey Bart has two doubles and three hits in four plate appearances...and no strikeouts.

Ohtani 37.5 x 12 = $450MM
Dodgers, Angels, Giants, Yankees….
Winn - good article about him at The Athletic a week or so ago. If he can stay healthy, he could be a nice addition to the staff in the future.
Sabol - a left-handed DH candidate if something happens to Pederson. Just keep him away from catching.
Bart - as Bart goes, so go the Giants. Among position players, he may be the the most important piece of the puzzle.
Good stuff. I read that article on Winn a couple weeks ago 98 with a filthy split.
Sabol absolutely can’t be no 2 catcher. But it is hard for a rule 5. Has to stick all year. But the bat may play.
Still hoping Davis grabs everyday 1B. He may be best hitter on team. Unfortunately, he may also be Dr. Strangeglove II.
$450,000,000 may be a bit light for Ohtani. I’m thinking at least $500,000,000.

He's doing very well. Both Taylor and Tyler Rogers haven't yet given up a run, same with Guzman and about a dozen minor league pitchers. Hjelle has given up one run in five innings. Sam Long has a 3.00 ERA, Logan Webb is 3.60. On the other hand, 21 year old phenom Kyle Harrison has an 18.00 ERA, same as Alex Cobb. Former Stanford Cardinal Tristan Beck sits at 7.20 ERA. Szapucki is at a firm 81.00 ERA. He got one out and gave up three earned runs. Not as bad as Drew Strotman who gave up 13 runs in 2/3rds of an inning.
On the hitting side, Stanford's own Stephen Piscotty leads the team with six hits (two doubles), and Casey Schmitt is right behind at five hits. Joey Bart is 3 for 8 with only 1 strikeout. Plays-a-catcher-on-TV Blake Sabol is 5 for 11, and all five are extra base hits, two HRs and three doubles. Conforto is 3 for 11 with an HR, JD Davis is 3 for 9, Haniger is 3 for 10 with two doubles. McCray is 3/10, he and Diaz have .364 OBPs. Thairo Estrada, 1 for 7. Late night Lamonte Wade is only 2 for 8, but both were extra base hits, a double and an HR. Crawford is 1 for 7, and Carter Aldrete is 2 for 9.
On the flip side, David Villar is the proud owner of an 0 for 11 streak. Yaz is 0 for 4. Wynns is 1 for 9, someon named Coulter is 2 for 15, Heliot Ramos is 2 for 13, Patrick Bailey is 1 for 7.
Giants are just 3-7 after 10 games, and Slater is still out with elbow neuritis. On the good side, after giving up six errors in their first game, they've only had five more errors in nine games. That's progress, isn't it?

To be honest, Mick, I don’t pay much attention to spring numbers. Especially early. Last couple weeks may be important numbers wise for those seeking the last couple spots. Otherwise, stay healthy and get ready. Although I do hope Villar comes around here soon. Don’t want it getting in his head.
Slater being hurt is unfortunate. But not surprising. I generally expect a couple IL trips. He just tends to break down a bit.
Most interested in how the last spots come down. Although with The Churn there will be plenty of shuttling between SF and Sac. So, who breaks camp and who’s with with the Club May 1 will be different

Strong article on The Athletic about the importance of Austin Slater to the Giants:
Austin Slater’s importance to the 2023 Giants - The Athletic
If you aren't a subscriber, the basic gist is that Slater is extremely valuable because (a) he plays all outfield positions, (b) he has one of the strongest outfield arms in baseball (it's true, 6th best arm in MLB from CF), © he has a .350 OPS from the right side (he's a right handed hitter), (d) he's one of only two fast players on the team (defined as 75th percentile or faster) and (e) the Giants don't have any better options.
And I'm
very glad that Lex doesn't place any importance in spring training stats -- I don't either, because the Giants are 3-9, and in last place in the cactus league with a -32 run differential, 12th in runs scored (of 15) and 13th in runs allowed.
In terms of OPS Blake Sabol (1.667), Joey Bart (1.444), Brett Wisely (1.264), Stephen Piscotty (1.238), & Casey Schmitt (1.167) are crushing it. Haniger (.800) and Conforto (.930) are doing well, but each have five strikeouts. Players who won't make the roster, but are hitting the cover off the ball are Gigliotti, Matheny, Williams, Brown and Meckler.
Conversely, Villar is not only 0 for 11, he has 7 strikeouts. Estrada is 1 for 10, Crawford is 1 for 9, Wynns is 1 for 9, Coulter is 2/15, Bailey is 1 for 7, Ramos is 2 for 13, Yaz is 1 for 6, Wade is 2 for 11, matos is 3 for 15.
Starting pitchers are a bit all over the map. Cobb has 8 strikeouts but a 9.00 ERA, Manaea has 6 strikeouts, but a 7.71 ERA. Ta. Rogers, DeSclefani, Guzman, Ty Rogers, WOod, Gavin have 0.00 ERAs (as do 1/2 dozen other pitchers who won't see the major league roster). Hjelle and Junis are 1.80 and 2.25 ERAs respectively. Camilo Doval and Sam Long at 3.00, Logan Webb at 3.60. STripling at 7.20.
Not sure how to interpret fielding. The team has 12 errors in 12 games (not good), but six were in the first game and no player has more than one error. Only two potential starters have errors (Estrada, Villar) and one pitcher (Tyler Rogers).

Yeah, I read the article. As Brisbee noted, Slater was awful v. RH in ‘21 and somewhat better in ‘22.
IMO, Slater were compelled to play everyday, it would be a disaster for SF. He doesn’t have the physical ability to play every day and he is no bargain v. RH pitching. In other words, forget Slater, Yaz’s health is a critical factor towards determining the Giants’ fate…..

I half agree with you. Slater can't play every day...he just can't. In the last two years, he had 306 and 325 plate appearances, which is probably the outer limit of his capability, given that in prior years he had between 106 and 225 plate appearances.
I think he does well against RH pitching. MLB average OPS in 2022 was .311 (Giants ranked 12th at .315). Slater's OPS was .350 against RHPs and .379 against LHPs. True, he destroys lefthanders. But he gets on base very well -- albeit without much power -- against righthanders. To put it bluntly, Slater has the best on base percentage on the team, by a mile. And he's one of only two fast players on the team, as the article pointed out....although...the Giants have stolen 9 bases in 10 attempts this spring.
And I think Yaz's health is pretty important. Slater will be 30 this year, but Yaz will be 32.

A few numbers to consider…
2022 OBP v. all pitchers: Slater .366, Pederson .353 (I would not characterize that as “has the best OBP on the team - by a mile”).
Slater 2021 OBP v. RH: .230, OPS: .497
Slater 2022 OBP v. RH: .350, OPS: .710
Was 2022 an aberation or did he finally unlock the secret to hitting v. RH? This season should provide us an answer. I remain skeptical until he puts two seasons back-to-back.
We absolutely agree on his value on the base paths. He is an outstanding base stealer. And, he is invaluable re: pinch hitting v. LH.
Now, if someone can coach him regarding hitting the cutoff man………..
The Belt Wars are over. Let the Slater Wars commence…..

The only way Slater plays vs RH is if there are injuries. I like Slater. He is valuable. As mentioned an aspect of his game is speed. He actually has some. Which on the Giants is a rare commodity. (Last in MLB in runners waived home from second on a single). But he can’t play everyday. He wears down. Injuries are always an issue. Kapler has used him very well. He slaughters lefties. Platooning with Yaz/Conforto is what Slaters role will and should be.
Defensively he is a little “spotty” imo. Takes bad routes at times. And, as Giant notes, makes poor decisions at times throwing. But he does have a good arm and decent range.
Keeping healthy is job 1. I don’t think he has got through a season without a stint on the IL.

Yes, after Pederson, for players with at least 200 ABs and are still in the organization, it drops to .322 (Estrada), .316 (Flores), .308 (Crawford).
Slater's career split vs. righties is terrible. He took a major leap last year, one that I think is lasting, particularly in a season where the league average BA is .242. He's figured the righties out, IMHO. But like you say, we'll find out this year.

I hope we don’t. He only gets appreciable time vs RH if there is an injury to one of the other OFs or Conforto/Yaz stink. Neither of which would bode well.
While I’m at it, I’ll continue my Anti-WAR , war. WAR may be a somewhat helpful tool in negotiating and when looking to trade/sign FAs. But it does not measure a players value to his organization. Crawford is Exnibit A. Last year was the first time he got hurt. Played 118 games. The Giants were 62-51 in his starts. His WAR 0.6.

Who said anything about Slater sucking? I certainly didn’t. He’s a good ball player. Perfectly suited in a platoon, 300-350 PAs role. Hes not helpless vs righthanders. My point is, he only is going to get significant ABs vs RH’s if something bad happens to Conforto/Yaz/Haniger.

I think Conforto/Yaz/Haniger are primed for an incredible year. So we agree.
Giants played Team USA tonight. Starting pitcher was Mikolas, an all star last year. Other pitchers for Team USA were Pressly (all star in 2019 and 2021), Ottavino (2.06 ERA for Mets last year), Graveman (1.77 ERA in 2021 and 3.18 ERA last year), Bednar (All Star last year) and Adam (1.56 ERA for the Rays last year). In short, they have some pitching.
Starters in the field were All Stars Betts, Goldschmidt, Trout, Schwarber, Arenado, Turner, Tucker, and McNeil. The only starter on the field who WASN'T an all-star was Realmuto, not an all star last year, but in three of the last five years.
In short, ladies and gentlemen, the Giants should have lost big. Instead, they won big. Haniger hit two doubles. Villar hit a home run. Matos hit a double. Giants struck out 10 times, but had 10 hits, and DeSclafani struck out Goldschmidt, who shreds Giants pitching. Maneaea gave up just one run in three innings, Alexander struck out all three batters in one inning. Giants allowed just four hits, three by Manaea.
We might maybe have a pretty good team here, once you play the starters.

I am not impressed with what has transpired thus far this spring. While hoping for more, I’m down to between 77-82 wins. They are missing a singular presence in the lineup and a Gausman or Rodon on the mound.

Slater was 21st in on base percentage (.366) in all of MLB last year for batters with at least 300 plate appearances. That doesn't suck too badly.
I wish I could share your optimistic outlook….
I am not impressed with what has transpired thus far this spring. While hoping for more, I’m down to between 77-82 wins. They are missing a singular presence in the lineup and a Gausman or Rodon on the mound.
That’s where I’ve been all along. Nothing to do with spring performances. Just be healthy, make the last few choices and ramp up. Which is what spring is about. Manaea having more life on his fastball is a good sign. They need him to be solid.
The lack of presence is a big problem in my eyes. Also, they have a lot of guys with injury issues.

Rodon out. Left forearm strain. Don’t know how bad or how long.

1) I don't want to overly invest into a preseason game, but this is one we should have lost by 5+ runs. I'm hoping that means we're primed for some breakouts.
2) I agree, I'm not overly impressed with the 3-9 record, but I
am enthused by progress, and by Conforto's home run today and Piscotty's two out double scoring two RBIs in the 5-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. First, a 5-1 win over Team USA, now a 5-2 win over the Brewers.
3) Giants, I think we'll win at least 86. Happy to have a small wager, if you like... ;)

A friendly, “I told you so” is about as far as I go re: gambling. Last year, Lex received a “well done” for calling the number (within one). This year, I would love to post a salute to your foresight….

I already have a small wager with Mick. Although I forget the particulars, I know that I want him to win…..
