USC with a big upset over #7 Ohio State, 83-74 in Vegas. Watkins with 32 points on 11-18 shooting. Quite the performance for USC - and good news for what should be a wild year out west in the final season of the Pac-12.

Juju was fantastic. Her pace and court vision, her poise and ability to hit shots, just terrific. Wish she was on my team, no doubt, and I hope USC is able to land a few more stars to surround her with even more talent in the future.
Agree re. Hildago — she's quick and flashy, but there's no way she would play "her game" under Tara's watch...

Does anyone know if Jenna Brown is hurt again? She didn’t play vs SC today or in Notre Dames exhibition game. I don’t know how she’s still on a scholarship and roster. How many games has she played in the last 4 years total? (She’s in her 6th year of school). I’m thinking less than 30 combined in 4 years.

I'm enjoying watching Colorado and their grit/toughness against LSU. Up 6 at half (mostly because I dislike Mulkey). We aren't the only team that struggles against the Buffs defense.

They looked slow, undisciplined, terrible defensively (Ohio St cannot shoot or they would have won), and turned it over 20 times. I like our chances against them.

Colorado-LSU is just as explosive as those of us who have been following the Pac-12 knew it would be.
File this one under: teams I'm not looking to play and coaches I don't want to see win. That said, a lot to be impressed with when it comes to the players. Van Lith started strong, but CU's Sherrod is stealing the show with her steals, defense, and her finishes at the basket. For my money, lots in common with Harmon from Texas. Vonleigh is looking good too.
Both teams have been sloppy at times—particularly in Colorado in transition—but at this point, I worry that we don't have the energy to match either, especially when it comes to our rebounding. We're going to need some Hull-level hustle to run with these teams!
As others have said, it is at the very least validating to see a team that has been such a tough matchup for us over the years is now giving Mulkey and co a headache as well!

UCLA-Purdue game is available on Pac-12 Network, LA area. Of interest, Betts is starting -- will be interesting to see how she does.

Yes, Betts started, was the first to score, and tallied an early block for the Bruins. But I remain unimpressed by her movement on the floor and the way she watches everyone else around her go for the rebound. Unsurprised to see her subbed out relatively early. I was bearish on Betts last year, and she has yet to change my mind.

Agreed. There was one rebound where she seemed particularly motivated, and that was a very nice finish through contact to end the half. At other times, she is still letting others hustle for boards and passing out when other bigs (*cough* Cam) would drive to the basket.
Upgrading my assessment to "inconsistent."

Well, in 20 minutes of play she was UCLA's leading rebounder and tied for leading scorer, getting 20 points.
She must have been doing something right.

I've been skeptical of UCLA's high preseason ranking but Purdue didn't suffer any big blowouts like this last season (and even had a win over Ohio State). Also Purdue is not totally lacking in size and won their exhibition 106-45. But they were hit pretty hard by the transfer portal so I reserve judgment for now on how much to read into this first game. Certainly a good sign for UCLA nonetheless.

Well, I was at the UCLA-Purdue game and here were my impressions- Rice and Osborne were incredibly impressive defensively. Purdue could not get the ball inside, but offensively not all that good, especially Kiki. She has not developed (yet) into the dynamic guard I thought she’d be.
The best guard by far was London Jones. She scored from everywhere. Perdue had no answer for her.
But the best UCLA player by far was Betts. She is a totally different player from last season. Cori started her along with Dugalic, who also played exceptionally well. Betts is no longer slow and methodical. Her posting and footwork are amazing and the biggest difference is the explosiveness. Only 20 minutes. She could have scored 30+ had Cori not taken her out.
Bessoir is now a reserve (don’t know what happened to her) and she didn’t do well at all.
Interesting story in The Daily Bruin who interviewed Betts. Paraphrasing: she is so happy at UCLA and the way Close and the staff have treated her. She emphasized how they care about her.
Betts (a liability last season on defense) is a liability no more. Purdue double-teamed her and she just powered through them.
Brink cannot take her for granted when the Bruins come to town.

I'm not at all surprised that Betts would begin to excel. She will be a handful for everyone this year and even better in the future.

Do you think that had anything to do with coaching or just the natural progression of a young, tall person growing into her body?

Surely some of both. I doubt UCLA's post coaching is objectively better than Stanford's, so not specifically UCLA coaching. However I'm sure it makes a difference that she personally likes it better there.

What Betts was lacking in my eyes was not so much skill as conditioning, notably stamina. She also needed to add quickness, but that's a slightly different animal. I also thought some strength would help. This is not so much basketball coaching as it is effort on the part of strength and conditioning coaches to put her in a better position to take advantage of her skills and minimize her deficiencies. Part of this is a natural growing into your body, but a lot of it is adjusting to the rigors of laying the foundation for what it takes to become a 30-minute per game player.
