RE: Class of 2023 - msqueri - 07-31-2022

It seems to me that we should think of it as Mike and Will plus an edge and EITHER a second edge or a Sam. That's because we'll typically be in nickel I would think. That means that if your front seven math is adding up to seven, that's one too many on probably a majority of plays. There will be plays with different configurations of course (e.g., two DL, two edge, a Sam, a Mike, and a Will without a nickel back) but if we're talking about the base defense, it's cheating to have the positions add up to 12 and I think it's more accurate to assume five DBs on a play than four.

RE: Class of 2023 - old spanish trail - 07-31-2022

Cheating sounds like a good idea. I think it would give us a better chance of winning.

RE: Class of 2023 - newguy - 07-31-2022

my two cents:

the only game that i've attended at Stanford Stadium in this century was last year's Utah game.  and i really don't want to see another game like that, either in person or on tv.  so naturally, i'm hoping that we sign as many 3-star-plus defensive linemen as we can get our hands on.

i'm concerned that a future opponent will use Utah's straightforward strategy of running the ball on as many plays as possible.  if that happens, then we should have the option of rotating linemen in and out as often as we feel like.  not that we should necessarily do that, but it would be nice to have the option.

RE: Class of 2023 - TrumpCard - 07-31-2022

ILBs help against the run too. From 2009-2014, Stanford landed: Skov, Tarpley, Martinez, and Okereke. All ended up playing in the NFL. AFAIK, no Stanford ILBs since then have played in the NFL.

1. Incorrect. Curtis Robinson played for the Broncos last year (saw ST action), and is currently on the 49ers practice squad.

2. Okereke was drafted in 2019. Since then, only two scholarship ILBs have even matriculated period - Robinson and Caleb Kelly (neither of whom were even ILBs to begin with). Peter Hansen's pathetic excuse for an ILB "pipeline" was truly astounding. I still maintain the position that coach Sanders walked into just as bad of a situation as Carberry did post-Bloomgren.

RE: Class of 2023 - TrumpCard - 08-01-2022

Seems like you agree with my conclusion but not with the way I got there. I’ll go with your logic, i.e. that Stanford barely recruited ILBs after 2014, not that the few post-2014 ILBs aren’t good. I guess. Though I still think the guys I listed are better ILBs than the few post-2014 ILB recruits.

RE: Class of 2023 - msqueri - 08-01-2022

The ILB situation is very dire. For 2022 it is what it is and we can hope that Miezan, Mangum-Farrar, and Damuni have the best years of their careers. Beyond this year it could get really ugly. 2023 depends on retention, although the size of the incoming class we're recruiting suggests we're building in assumptions of high attrition like last year. Miezan and Mangum-Farrar are currently in their fifth years but could return (and actually would be plausible candidates for seventh years). Next year would be Damuni's fifth (but seventh since high school due to the mission, risk of wanting to move on with life, transfer elsewhere for a different experience, etc.) as well as Sinclair's fifth. Right now I don't really have any idea on who, if any, return from that quartet. 2023 depends on that question. Personally, I think expecting these guys to be around in 2024 or later is highly unrealistic. For that reason, Dubre becomes one of the most important players on the roster nobody talks about, but we're going to need multiple from a rogues' gallery to step up.

The situation is so bad that I wonder a) whether the coaches' have a specific understanding of Miezan/JMF/Damuni retention for 2023 (I doubt it) and b) whether something very creative might be considered, like tweaking the defense yet again to have something very different than the current "inside linebacker" concept. To that latter point, many teams have Star/Viper/Spur/Buck/Bandit/etc. (there are several dozen names across the country) for various hybrid positions (sometimes LB/DL like our Edge concept, often safety/LB). If Sinclair comes back for a fifth and/or sixth year he could be a candidate. Our recruitment of relatively small safeties leaves me scratching my head on who else might be an option.

My guess is that as soon as 2023 or 2024 we are playing Benjamin Hudson significant snaps at ILB and it's one of the weakest links Stanford football has ever seen.

RE: Class of 2023 - TrumpCard - 08-01-2022

Is Leviticus Su’a not an option in this recruiting class?  I’ve been holding out hope. And someone mentioned recently that Bailey is working out at two positions, so maybe he can help at the SAM or MIKE.

Su'a: yes, among a couple others.

Bailey: Sam. Remember, Sam is an Edge position. We're talking about Mike or Will here.

Early 2023 target Samuel Omosigho (committed to Oklahoma) stated in an interview a while ago that we were recruiting him for the "Star" position. This is happening.

RE: Class of 2023 - TrumpCard - 08-01-2022

I see the publisher of Stanford’s site on Rivals recently put in a prediction that Stanford will land Tre Williams. He’s not such a highly rated recruit, but he has a number of good offers. 247 says he’s an edge player, but his smaller frame seems more suited to playing in coverage. I hope he ends up being part of the solution. Not sure  where Stanford gets a run stopping LB other than Su’a in this class, but I guess I need to subscribe to a service for that.

RE: Class of 2023 - gailtate - 08-01-2022

Things are so forlorn at Stanford these days I gotta wonder how excited we can get about any of this stuff. I mean think about it: How great can any of these guys be if they want to play for the Cardinal today -- to be coached by Shaw&Co.? Play in the has-been Pac12 if they're offered by the Big-Boy conferences? Be cheered on by Stanford's sold-out houses and screaming Game Day fanatics? The buzz of the Bowl-Game brand we enjoyed in the early-to-mid teens is long gone. All we got is delusional Shaw looking back through his scrap-book.

Thanks, Debbie Downer.  Do you also do weddings and kids' birthday parties?
How do we even know that Stanford won't be in the B1G or the Pac/ACC merger by 2024?
Why do you think the current trend is any more inexorable than the one in the mid-2000s?
We get excited sometimes because it's the only college team we've got.  We can't go back in time and attend U$C (lol).

Unfortunately, Harbaugh got Evan Link. He was one I wanted for this class.

Just speculation, but not completely unfounded as I know some of these guys. I wouldn't hold your breath on getting Miezan for a 6th year. Sinclair will probably come back for a 5th though.

Well we have Sac State and they have an actual offense. Just stay away from the shooting gallery downtown.

That's my understanding. 2027-2028 as the revival of Stanford football (maybe with a new coach by then)?

Well, if Stanford football performs as poorly over the next 2-3 years as some are predicting, it is hard to believe we won't have a new coach by then.
