Colorado has 4 players in transfer portal:  seniors Finau, Tuitele; Balcksten 6-3 soph, Gerber 6 ft walk-on (on academic scholarship)

Coaching: Shauna Green (Dayton) to illinois;  Amagua-Hamilton (sp?) Missouri State to Virginia; Jodi Taylor Georgia to Texas A&M

Missouri St cupboard gonna be bare - losing  key seniors and best player (Blackwell) in portal. Coach was only there 3 years, inherited players, questions about her recruiting

If you start with the premise that all P5 scholarship hoops players were STUDS in high school, used to playing a LOT – a pretty safe assumption – and couple that with the reality that hoops is VERY IMPORTANT to these young women’s happiness (another safe assumption), then  the portal activity is no surprise.  And then when you layer on that coaches are human and have favorites and less-favorites, then the high portal activity becomes an expectation, really.

Very few schools have Stanford’s “staying power” forces to combat the overpowering desire for these players to go where they can PLAY the game they love.  [The Creighton hero who just beat Iowa, her school last season, is the fairy tale story on that front].  Would a star be willing to play fewer minutes to be on a championship contender?  Yeah, maybe.  Would a star be willing to play fewer minutes to get  a degree from an elite institution?  Yeah, maybe.  There are few schools that have these countervailing forces working to their advantage in women’s college hoops world:  Stanford, Duke, ND, and some of the better public universities like Texas, UNC (am sure I’m missing others).

The bottom line is this:  Stanford is in an exceptionally favorable position when compared to the ROW in college hoops to combat the siren song of the transfer portal.  Tara benefits from coaching at Stanford, and so there is good fortune for her (and us) there.  But Tara is the one who built Stanford into a perennial championship contender, which is the other “staying force” factor.  And that is full credit to her, and good for us!

P.S.  The men’s side had that alignment, briefly, when Shaw took over the Contending Program Harbaugh built.  Men’s hoops had it in Monty heyday.  It’s a shame that neither men’s side major program can battle the portal like women’s hoops team can.  And I think we’ve seen that play out in the real world.

P.P.S.  The explosion in portal activity is also explained by coaches openly acknowledging that it's a form of free agency that they regularly review and mine.  I was taken aback a bit last year by the Louisville women's coach in the post-game presser after the L to Stanford in Elite 8.  When asked about next season due to loss of seniors, he matter-of-factly said words to effect of "Well, we'll know what we have next year after we go through the transfer portal process, which is essentially free agency.  We expect to add some good players that way."  Just to be so forward about it kind of confirmed that my clinging to the "old school beliefs" of 4-year student athletes was indeed just that:  anachronistic.

Arizona has 4 in the portal
Asi had 7 mpg this year
Erdogan had 5 mpg this year
Love had 14 mpg this year
Vonleh had 7 mpg this year

Love is the one player with significant minutes who is leaving.  I wonder if these four are shopping around for more minutes or if they were encouraged to leave.  Arizona is losing a lot of youth.

Is this a push or a pull?  Either way, the constant transfers annoy me.

RE: General WBB 21-22 Season - Softball Fan - 03-26-2022

The increase in transfers is annoying in some ways but the freedom to find a place the players like and are happy about is a plus for those who are dissatisfied for one reason or other.

None or these players are going to make their living playing basketball.  My advice would be focus on your major and your studies.  In the grand scheme of things, four years of playing basketball will seem like small potatoes compared to a 50 year career.  So if you are transferring schools do it primarily because you want to change majors or something related to your career.

Vonleh was ranked # 100 of of HS last year

RE: General WBB 21-22 Season - Lorcan - 03-27-2022

Arizona State hires Natasha Adair, the former head coach at Delaware. Certainly an interesting hire given that it's unclear what her connections are out west.

That is very interesting. Thanks

Her resume sounds very good. Best wishes to her to make ASU rise again... but stay behind Stanford.

On paper, Arizona will already have a pretty good 12-woman roster for next season  even without any potential incoming transfers:

F - Cate REESE  6'2  (5Sr)
G - Shaina PELLINGTON  5'8  (5Sr)
G - Bendu YEANEY  5'10  (5Sr)
G - Taylor CHAVEZ  5'10  (5Sr)
G - Helena PUEYO  6'0  (Sr)
C - Lauren WARE  6'4  (Jr)
G - Madison CONNER  6'0  (So)
F - Gisela SANCHEZ  6'3  (So)
C - Maya NNAJI  6'4  (Fr)
G - Paris CLARK  5'10  (Fr)
G - Kailyn GILBERT  5'8  (Fr)
G - Lemyah HILTON  5'11  (Fr)

They bring back 80% (REESE, PELLINGTON, YEANEY, WARE) of their starting line-up, with PUEYO or CONNER possibly replacing Sam THOMAS as the starting wing.  But expectations are high for NNAJI  (#4 overall PN, #10 overall ESPN) and CLARK (#21 overall ESPN) who are both McD AAs, as well as GILBERT (#31 overall ESPN)

RE: General WBB 21-22 Season - M T - 03-27-2022

I wonder if the NCAA might consider a rule that the percentage of athletes transferring into a team shall be no more than one plus twice the average number expected transfers based on total transfers into the school.   That is, if a school has 10% of the 2023-2024 student-body (not counting freshmen) as transfers, then no team could have more than 20% of their non-freshmen being transfers, without asking for an exception.

Grad school admissions would not be considered transfers for this purpose.

This has some features.

Who do we want to see win tomorrows games? I’m hoping NC State. It almost feels inevitable or destined to be UConn and if we succeed against them South Carolina in the final. A gauntlet considering the difficulty of our regional. Our team is prepared and I like our chances against anyone.

RE: General WBB 21-22 Season - TheWildJacko - 03-28-2022

NC State for sure, and then Michigan. I think UCONN has more weapons, and we may have trouble defending UCONN's guards, esp. Fudd and Bueckers. Michigan's primary strength is in the post with Naz Hillmon; we have the inside presence to negate her. Louisville has great guards as well, so I'd think they'd be more problematic for us.

Here are our chances against our remaining potential opponents, according to FiveThirtyEight (% that we win the matchup):

Final Four Semis:

vs. UCONN: 55%
vs. NC State: 48%

Title Game:

vs. Louisville: 59%
vs. Michigan: 75%
vs. S. Carolina: 33%

Interesting that they have us favored slightly favored against UCONN, but not against NC State, despite giving 50-50 odds for either UCONN or NC State to win their game today.

Her Hoop Stats agrees. Here are their predictions for neutral court matchups with each team:

(% chance of Stanford victory, predicted margin)
UCONN: 57.7% chance, +2.1 points
NC State: 44.9% chance, -1.5 points
Louisville: 59.1% chance, +2.6 points
Michigan: 72.6% chance, +6.8 points
S. Carolina: 36.1% chance, -3.9 points

We might have the unique opportunity to avenge 2 out of our 3 loses this season if we make the final against SC.

Watching UConn vs NC State now and unfortunately an injury to Dorka Juhasz that does not look good. Severely dislocated or broken wrist from the reply.

Yes, that was tough to watch.  Fun game otherwise.  NC State coming back.
