does this qualify as Cougin' it?

Probably would be called Coltin’ it, no?

Saturday kind of proves my point about great players only sometimes making good coaches.

In other news, without Lamar Jackson, Greg Roman’s offense scored 3 points.

There is a reason Roman has never been a serious HC candidate since leaving. Glad Stanford did not hire him.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - lex24 - 12-23-2022

What is it about McCaffrey that leads to snubs.  He has the greatest year for a non-QB skill position player in ‘15 since…. and doesn’t win the H.

This year he leads NFC in yards from scrimmage, but doesn’t make Pro- Bowl. Barkley certainly understandable.  But Pollard and Miles Sanders.  AYFKM.

All McCaffrey has done in his career is put up the 4th  highest yards from scrimmage a game (114) behind only Brown, Terrell Davis and Sanders - Barry not Miles. Yet, I don’t hear him mentioned among the great NFL RB’s.  He should be.

He’s white Lex. Not PC to call him a star.

The dude has long since put to bed any notions of being inappropriately judged based on his pigment. The reality is he wasn't getting much attention in Carolina this year in part because nobody had seen him for a while or thought he could be trusted, based on recent injury history. Same reason Dre Greenlaw - who is black - was snubbed.

And you know that how sir?

From your usually unimpeachable sources like the ones in the know on King and Third?

JFC.

I told you in my post how, and I have no clue to what you are referring otherwise.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Phogge - 12-24-2022

What papers do you read in “Carolina.”

What blogs do you follow in “Carolina?”

How many people in “Carolina” have told you directly that he “can’t be trusted?”

As for Third and King, are you privy to dope on Correa’s physical?

I doubt all in your posts. No sources, no banana.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - French Rage - 12-24-2022

They're clearly looking at pure rushing yards, where Sanders and Pollard are ahead of him, so let's not make this into something larger.  An RB who can play WR and an WR who can play RB may be what every team looks for and needs now, but there's no spot for it currently in Pro Bowl voting.  Probably should be.

Carolina papers and blogs have nothing at all to do with the sentiment that kept Christian McCaffrey from being voted a Pro Bowl player.

I thought the Giants looked foolish based on the fact they called a presser before doing the physical, and questioned their lack of due diligence in general. Where you get any other ideas is between your ears.

More fuel to your fire... Deebo Samuel only made the Pro Bowl last year because the first half of the year he had big receiving yard numbers. If he had performed in the first half are a receiver as he did the second last year, he never would have made the Pro Bowl as a WR. The fact he did so much as a RB in the second half added to his fame, but didn't factor into his Pro Bowl selection for the reasons you stated. WRs make it based on receiving yards. RBs make it based on rushing yards. That said, I still think McCaffrey's recent injury history and Carolina sucking early were big factors in his Pro Bowl snub. If he played on the Niners and produced as he has since joining Niners, he'd have been voted to Pro Bowl, IMO. He is just too much of an offensive weapon to not be considered a Pro Bowl player, regardless of not having league leading rushing stats.

Agreed.  I didn't hear anything about him pre-trade.  Now I can't turn the TV on without a story about how much he's helping the 49ers.  Granted living in the Bay Area probably is a big factor there, but it seems the case even with national stories.  No one is following the Panthers this year.

The crazy thing is that Carolina has a legit shot of making it to the playoffs.  At 6-9, they are a half game back of Tampa Bay, and if they win next week, they’ll have won the head-to-head.

He’s a running back. Who also catches a lot of passes. Marshall Faulk is in the HOF as a running back. Same thing. I don’t get your point.

They ran for almost 300 today. NFC and AFC South are both pretty week.  Jacksonville very well may win AFC. Lawrence starting to show why he was No 1 pick.  GM did a great job of going out and finding weapons for him.

HOF voting is voting for the player; you can look at the totality of their career without limiting them to a single statistic.  Pro Bowl voting is voting for the position, and the voters (who no one ever claimed were geniuses) are clearly voting for a single statistic for the RB position and not considering other things.

ok to talk about today's game?

kittle was great - except (or perhaps because of) stealing the td pass intended for ray ray.

minor goof by shanahan challenging a 4-yard completion (and losing). then he didn't have a challenge left on a pass play ruled incomplete that on review likely would have been an interception for the niners. and washington went on to score.

i thought maybe he could have called a few more runs by ray ray, given that he is the designated deebo replacement and that his one run went for a 70+ yard td.

but all in all a great game. fun to watch nick bosa!

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - OutsiderFan - 12-25-2022

Javon Kinlaw is not a pass rusher. He is a run stuffer, or more specifically, his job is to absorb double team blocks and hold his ground. He did that very well against the Commies. Some guys who play in the NFL need to consume massive calories and lift to maintain their weight and strength. Kinlaw is a naturally massive human, at 6-5 320, and most of it is lean muscle and bone, not fat. Sure would be nice to see him stay injury-free the remainder of this season.

Purdy looked a little off in the first half, but that Jennings drop that led to pick was brutal. It could have been slightly more in front of him, but it was still a ball that he had room to run with if he hauled it in. Second half was more like it. I think we can put the "his arm isn't strong enough" talk about Purdy to bed. It's plenty strong enough. His accuracy is what matters most, and he has it in spades, from pocket, or on the move.

I hated the red zone play calling in the 4th quarter, but I LOVED the fact Shanahan thought better of kicking FG to go up by 13 and instead went for the first down on 4th down. I was screaming at my TV to go for it and was cursing the FG attempt, so was really happy to see him change his mind. Even if it failed, it was the right call to go for it!

Far too many yards allowed passing. If Ward wasn't out for a spell, McClaurin likely doesn't catch the long ball and the score is 37-13.  I've reached the point where giving up more than 17 is a disappointment with this year's defense, no matter what the offense does.

Raiders and Cardinals will roll over for the Niners the last two weeks. The question is will the Niners play down to their level or keep raising their own?

Coaches talk about “execution “.  Often when it’s not there. If you want to see a perfectly executed play, check out Ray Rays TD.  Interesting in that usually the jet sweep involves  some fake to the RB.  In this case McCaffrey sprints on the snap, gets to the hip of the corner, allowing Kittle to move off him and block a second defender. Beautifully designed and executed play.

Shanahan should be COY this year.  Amazing he can do it without McDaniel……

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Phogge - 12-26-2022

Chronicle article re Kittle by Silver talks about the blocking on Ray to the second power’s run.

Silver has had quite a few stops along the career. Big time Cal Guy. Hw was my correspondent on the Steve Young segment that I shot and produced for SI’s Sportsman OTY show in ‘94. Great to work with and remembered my cousin, the RT on the last two Muncie teams.

Apparently Shanahan gets on Kittle’s case in practice. Partially for laughs. Agree with Lex re Mike, think Lynch should get EOY. Eight of nine draft picks make the team/taxi with the obvious Purdy story THE story of the draft. Add in Jimmy and the pickups of C.Ward, Ray-Ray, the Spec team’s Odum and the extension of Greenlaw and more (McCaffrey) and you have a winner.

Every spring, the media puts together their grades based upon what they think of the drafts of the NFL's teams. Most of the reviews I read about the 49ers' 2022 draft were "B-", more or less, although Bleacher Report had a highly complimentary paragraph on Brock Purdy after OTAs.

Two left.  Playing out the string in football is always tough.  All about being as healthy as possible for playoffs.  Everything else is relatively insignificant.
