So the longest he lasted at any coaching job was four years over a 38 year period.

The last Stanford Football Coach that lasted four years did well enough to make it to the Orange Bowl

He will need speed.  Always a hard commodity for a Stanford to recruit.

Having said that - hope like hell he succeeds.  I’ll learn to live with 55-48 wins…..  :)

For what it's worth, and from what I can tell, Taylor seems more interested in Oregon- or K-State-esque spread offenses, where the goal is to open up running lanes, rather than your Mike Leach endless passing offenses. But some of that may be making a virtue from necessity -- from what I can tell his Sac State QBs were not overly talented throwers. He may have different thoughts about how to approach offense when given a Stanford-type recruiting pipeline.

Good.  Tempo is always an issue.  Up tempo is fine.  But those old style Oregon super up tempo - I think that would be disastrous at Stanford.

Daniels and Patu should welcome this, I would think.

Everybody talking about Taylor being fired at Utah, please point us to some evidence that was the case. Or is this all just whispers?

And to be clear, whispers may be all we have and they may be correct. But if you're going to say that's what happened I want to know the basis for it.

Not directed at you.  But why should we  care if he got fired at Utah (unless it was for being abusive or some other non- football sin. And there is no evidence of that).  Coaches get fired. It’s part of the job.  What he did at Utah is irrelevant. Frankly, given his offensive philosophy and Whittingham’s philosophy, it seems like a strange hire anyway.

Whittingham had Dennis Erickson as the OC at one point then made a change, finding the right for Whittingham took some time, it happens.  Look at the relationships Saben has had with his OC's, not always on the same page.

Personally, I think we should care because it’s evidence that he wasn’t very good in the one opportunity he’s had to run an offense at this level. Maybe Whit shares some of the blame but there’s no other evidence anyone can point to that he’s capable of succeeding at this level as a coordinator, much less as a HC. Saying he wasn’t abusive is a very low bar in terms of expectations for a new HC.

Yes, Harbaugh hadn’t had success at this level prior to his hire either and he’s kind of a jerk, too. I recognize those points but Harbaugh was one in a million. There’s only one Jim Harbaugh and Troy Taylor ain’t him. Not to mention that Taylor is already 54 years old. If he was the next coming of Harbaugh, his greatness would’ve already been discovered.

This thread has taught me all possible head coaches will be awful so we just shouldn't ever hire another head coach.

https://espn700sports.com/news/what-we-know-about-the-departure-of-utah-oc-troy-taylor/

I think this article, which is pretty favorable to Taylor, makes it clear what the story was. While the article asserts that if "Taylor had not left of his own accord" his contract would have been honored, the article makes it abundantly clear that the OL coach had been elevated to at least co-OC and had the head coach's confidence, which Taylor did not. He was functionally demoted. He acted accordingly and found another job. That was probably the intent of the demotion. Both parties handled the departure in the best way possible, which was good. However, there must have been a big disconnect between what Taylor expected when he took the job and what he was actually allowed to do.

And it's taught me to avoid fan sites during such a hiring process. Best to skip all the speculation, rumors, wish lists, and teeth-gnashing, and just wait for the announcement.

Yes, I posted that article earlier in this thread.

A quote from it-

Quote:I’m not saying that Taylor was necessarily destined to be a longtime fixture at the U — However, had the literal perfect job opportunity not arisen for him, he’d be back on the hill as Kyle Whittingham’s offensive coordinator in 2019.

Seems far from being fired. Don't think the distinction is just pedantic.

RE: Football Coach Search Master Thread (Troy Taylor) - BostonCard - 12-10-2022

In ancient days of yore,
When football was a sport for the bold,
There lived a man named Troy Taylor,
Whose passion and ambition never grew old.

He grew up in the heartland of America,
Where the fields were green and the skies were blue,
And from a young age, he knew
That football was his calling, through and through.

He trained and practiced day and night,
His determination never faltered,
And as he grew, his skill and might
Became the stuff of legend and chatter.

He led his team to victory,
And his reputation grew with every win,
Until one day, the call came to him,
To become the coach of Stanford football's kin.

And so he took the reins,
And with his guidance, the team did thrive,
Their victories piled up in heaps,
And their spirit soared to the sky.

Troy Taylor became a legend,
A master of strategy and might,
And under his leadership,
Stanford football reached new heights.

So let this epic poem serve
As a testament to his great deeds,
For Troy Taylor is a hero,
And his legacy forever heeds.

You and I apparently read the article quite differently. In the same article it is clearly and unambiguously pointed out that the OL coach was now on an equal level to Taylor. The statement that "had the literal perfect job opportunity not arisen for him, he’d be back on the hill as Kyle Whittingham’s offensive coordinator in 2019" is the authors assertion contradicted (by the author pointing out) Taylor took a cut in pay to accept his new job. It is clear from the article that Taylor was no longer the OC at Utah. While he possibly would still be employed there, he didn't have the job he was originally hired to do. IMO, that is being "fired".

This is not to say being "fired" is always bad. You may be justifiably aggrieved by the fact you weren't allowed to install your own offensive system. You may have been told you would be, but that didn't happen. However, you are still fired.
