So far, it's walks followed by hits, and today home runs, and lots of pitches. Not good. Prior years, it's walks followed by outs and lots of pitches. He didn't have a normal spring, but still..
Chapman is uppercutting everything, so he's striking out a ton on high fast balls.

In hindsight, he should have taken the Jordan Montgomery approach to the season - spend some time in the minors preparing to face major league hitters….

Snell is a notoriously slow starter. At this point last year, he was 0-2 with a 6.92 ERA. He's starting even slower this year, given his long period away from spring training.

Joey Bart just hit his second home run for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He's batting .400 and his on-base percentage is .538.
He's still the third string catcher, he's only got into three games. He's had four hits and 10 at bats, and three of the four have been out for extra bases.
Looks like the change in scenery agreed with him. At least so far.

True, but I pay attention to what's happening with former members of the family; e.g., Zack Wheeler, proud possessor of a recent 5 yr/$118 mms. contract. 3.00 ERA, 1.04 WHIP (yay!) and an 0-3 record (awww).
And Joey Bart has the second-highest OPS in MLB, second only to Royce Lewis who has two doubles in two ABs. Always thought he would do okay once he was out of SF. I imagine that when the Giants drafted Bailey, Bart had a few long moments wondering why he was here. But now he's there, and he'll be just fine.
In other news, Giants are #17 in team OPS (.702), and #26 in ERA (4.99). Also #6 in fielding percentage (.990) and #16 in Rtot (-2). I think all numbers will improve as the team gels and they don't play a lot of games against the Dodgers and Padres...

v. Washington and Tampa 2-4, v. San Diego 4-3, and, of course, LA 0-3. I don’t think it’s the schedule that is the reason for the slow start. Regardless who they are playing, the team is playing poorly. The only bright spot is that “it’s still early”.

You're right of course. Fun facts:
1) It's interesting to note that LA (11-8) would be 8-8 without their 3-0 record over the Giants...two of which were one-run games.
2) Camilo Doval didn't pitch for nearly a week until last night's save, and he didn't get a single warmup pitch in the bullpen before going in (Taylor Rogers had been warming up, Bob Melvin changed his mind).
3) Hicks' 1.00 ERA is the second-lowest in the NL. He's only given up three walks in his three starts to date.
4) Marlins starter Ryan Weathers is a lefty. I'm guessing we see Flores at 1B today.
5) Giants' bullpen has a 2.25 ERA on the trip.
6) Giants are 6-1 when holding opponents to three or fewer runs.
7) Kyle Harrison threw 80 fastballs and changeups in his 85 pitches, despite the fact that his slider is his signature pitch.
8) Giants have an inordinate number of players performing at sub-par levels, including Chapman (.188, 18 Ks), Slater (.083), Murphy (.118), Yastrzemski (.125, 12 Ks). Estrada's at .227, but he's picking up. Ahmed's probably playing over his head at .265.
9) Only four players are really hitting well, Fitzgerald (1.212 OPS), Wade (.983 OPS), Conforto (.922 OPS) and Bailey (.777). Soler's at .797 with 16 K's.

He hasn't given up an earned run in three starts and 15 innings, and he's struck out 16, with a 0.717 WHIP. He's the first Cubs pitcher in 115 years to have a 0.00 ERA in his first three starts. And his deal is not all that different from Hicks, 4 years/$53 million. Farhan missed on that one.

Thanks. However, since we have no idea whether Imanaga was interested in signing with SF, we really don’t know if Zaidi missed out at all. You can only sign the guys who want to play for you. Hicks was interested because the Giants offered him something no one else did - a chance to start. So far, the Hicks deal looks pretty good.

Harrisons signature pitch is his fastball. By far. Next best pitch is changeup. His slider and slurve are used sparingly.

Back in January, Pavlovic reported that the Giants weren't interested in Imanaga...they viewed him as a #4 or #5 starter. I read another article claiming he didn't have great stuff. I liked him personally, but strangely they don't listen to me... ;)

Jung Hoo Lee has a nine game hitting streak, batted third today, 2 for 4. He's hitting .270/.317/.338, and stole a base today. Estrada had two hits, one a double. Soler went 2 for 3 with a run scored.
Bailey (.286) stole his first base, and threw out Chisholm, a very fast runner.
Giants had two DPs, neither involving Chapman.
Slater was 0 for 3, but hit the ball hard twice. Giants were 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position. Yeesh.

I still contend that dumping Yaz and Slater is the right course of action. It is time to give Meckler (LH) and Ramos (RH) or Matos (RH) a season long shot at proving they are major leaguers.
Works for me. Yaz looks particularly overmatched. He was terrific in 2019, was one of the best in the league in 2020 (COVID year), finished 8th in MVP vote. Last three years, his strikeout rate has been slowly ticking up until it took a big jump this year. I think his fade started in the playoffs against the Dodgers. He hit 25 HRs in 2021 but went 0 for 13 in the playoffs. And he's 33. At least Slater is only 31. His batting averages have improved each of the last three years to .270 last year. Yaz was .224, .213 and .233. Slater's at league average OBP, and his at bats look good, he's not overmatched. But I'd switch out Yaz for Matos tomorrow.

The problem with that is they would then have a couple RH. If they move Yaz, they to replace him with a LH. Either move Meckler in and Yaz out or Matos/Ramos in and Slater out (or move both Yaz and Slater out).

Too early. Especially with Yaz who is notoriously streaky. If they still are flailing away 20 games from now, then I’d exp3ct a move.

I heard Roger Munter latest podcast with Terry Crowley. Munter has a terrific website for those of you who are giant diehard. Unit he spoke of, things, Kyle Harrison. He is one of two pitchers 23 or under that are in starting rotations this year. Gives you an idea of how special Harrison is. He also pointed out that the secondary pitches are a work in progress.
he noted that when Logan Webb broke up with the Giants, he didn’t even have the sinker. He was four seam fastball guy. He learned the sinker after his debut.
Lower minor leagues, it was a slider that was Harrisons main secondary pitch. Now it’s a change up. Both our works in progress. I’m assuming he will meet both going forward. Also he’s dialed down the fastball. Was throwing around 97 atDeLaSalle now around 93-94. Not an accident. Possibly part of the Giants thought process in thinking Max Velo for a starting pitcher, leads to more injuries. He also pointed out. Giants organizationally are very sinker heavy.
Another point he made – which is somewhat disturbing – is that the Giants organizationally have had a hard time hitting fastballs. It was a big issue up and down the minor leagues last year.

Back in January, Pavlovic reported that the Giants weren't interested in Imanaga...they viewed him as a #4 or #5 starter. I read another article claiming he didn't have great stuff. I liked him personally, but strangely they don't listen to me... ;)

Giants won today behind Keaton Winn (1-3), Doval got his third save. Stanford's Erik Miller looked great, no hits or walks in his inning. His ERA continues to drop.
Jung Hoo Lee has a nine game hitting streak, batted third today, 2 for 4. He's hitting .270/.317/.338, and stole a base today. Estrada had two hits, one a double. Soler went 2 for 3 with a run scored.
Bailey (.286) stole his first base, and threw out Chisholm, a very fast runner.
Giants had two DPs, neither involving Chapman.
Slater was 0 for 3, but hit the ball hard twice. Giants were 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position. Yeesh.
I still contend that dumping Yaz and Slater is the right course of action. It is time to give Meckler (LH) and Ramos (RH) or Matos (RH) a season long shot at proving they are major leaguers.
Works for me. Yaz looks particularly overmatched. He was terrific in 2019, was one of the best in the league in 2020 (COVID year), finished 8th in MVP vote. Last three years, his strikeout rate has been slowly ticking up until it took a big jump this year. I think his fade started in the playoffs against the Dodgers. He hit 25 HRs in 2021 but went 0 for 13 in the playoffs. And he's 33. At least Slater is only 31. His batting averages have improved each of the last three years to .270 last year. Yaz was .224, .213 and .233. Slater's at league average OBP, and his at bats look good, he's not overmatched. But I'd switch out Yaz for Matos tomorrow.
The problem with that is they would then have a couple RH. If they move Yaz, they to replace him with a LH. Either move Meckler in and Yaz out or Matos/Ramos in and Slater out (or move both Yaz and Slater out).
Too early. Especially with Yaz who is notoriously streaky. If they still are flailing away 20 games from now, then I’d exp3ct a move.

Yeah, I know. Given the salaries earned by Yaz/Slater, it’s very unlikely either would be dumped. However, I want to see what Matos, Meckler and/or Ramos can do if they receive a full look. Maybe one of them becomes a player whose name you write on the lineup card every day.
