While I am disappointed that Kate Paye will continue to coach, I am very excited about Ines Sotelo coming to Stanford. I watched a fair number of Michigan State games and Sotelo is a very active forward with good length and athleticism. She will play immediately alongside Eschmeyer in the front court. Keeping my fingers crossed that KP will (finally) discard her horrible offense. Stanford still needs another experienced forward as well as a guard and wing.

Stanford needs a three point shooter.

Agree. Preferably a guard or wing. Never liked Nunu and Lara shooting three's when their strengths were mid-range or driving to the basket.
We'll see if Stanford can acquire a few more portal pick-ups by the 20th. Regarding Paye, I am beginning to think that the reason Donahoe never got back to you is because he has not been the one making the decisions. I think it's been TVD all along, advising Donahoe not to fire KP, but to keep her on for a 3rd. season, despite what may have happened that led to all the transfers.
My speculation is based on the following assumption: TVD groomed KP for all those years to eventually take over the team and continue the Stanford legacy and despite the fact that Paye has (in 2 seasons) shown her inability to coach on the big stage, Vanderveer can't accept that fact and throw her under the bus because Vanderveer believes that (firing her) would tarnish her own legacy; that she failed to pass on the torch to someone who could succeed. I think this is all about TVD's ego; that she somehow believes KP MUST eventually succeed before Tara officially retires and fades into the sunset, knowing the program and her legacy is in safe hands. It's conceivable that Donahoe wanted to fire Paye, but he didn't want to buck a legend.

I think that the situation is further clouded/complicated if it's true the Paye family is/has been a major donor to DAPER as someone noted earlier (can't remember if it was this thread or another), which would be a shame for the program, if not a bit of a COI.
At any rate, I was encouraged by your thoughts on Inés Sotelo so checked out some video and liked what I saw - her style of play and athleticism reminded me of the Hull twins. Our shopping list is still long, but it looks like she can be an immediate contributor on both ends of the court.

In 2013,
Kate's dad. Kate's stepdad (Anne Paye's second husband) Edward Storm endowed a $1m women's basketball scholarship in honor of Anne Paye. Erica McCall (Bird) was the first recipient.

The Paye family legacy is very sticky.
I tend to think that TV would be hands-off in this situation, but I have no factual basis for my opinion.

Paye's made a $1 million donation in 2013.
Agreed with other posters. Finding a 3 point shooter should be a top priority. Donahoe should not have said he would share more publicly if he wasn't confident that would happen. Some of this may be out of his control yes but total silence and lack of transparency is not.

really? you can get a major university to hire (or retain) your family member as a head coach for 1 million? when you can no longer get your kid into stanford (or other top schools) for a million dollar donation (cf varsity blues)? really?

Times have certainly changed, considering some college players are looking at that much in a year.

The Paye family has a lot of history with Stanford, not just a one time contribution. John Paye was the quarterback on the football team and starter on the basketball team in the early 80's. I don't know how many other Paye family tree members attended Stanford but the long term affiliation with Stanford would have some impact on the decision of whether to fire Kate or give her more time. It is not a pay to play situation.
Cheers,
Pete F.

As a decades-long Stanford women's basketball fan, I completely reject your attempt to put this problem on Tara. While I can believe that Tara recommended Paye, given Paye's connections to the program and loyalty to remaining on the coaching staff over the years, I do not believe that Tara has made any effort to influence the Stanford Athletic Department's actions with respect to Paye as the wbb coach since Tara retired and Paye was announced as head coach. Such interference by Tara, in my view, would be completely contrary to Tara's character.
I challenge anyone to point to actual evidence that Tara has interfered with Paye's tenure as head coach. Show me I am wrong. Given her character (displayed over 30 years as a Stanford coach), Tara would not interfere in Stanford's retention (or dismissal) of Paye.
And I say this as someone who watched and loved Paye as a player (i.e., saw her post-game appearances in the tent in the 1990's).
Here's hoping that Stanford gets it together over the next couple of years and finds a wbb coach who can blend the excellence of athletics and academics that Tara was able to do.

I seldom post on this board, but the above evidenceless assertion that concludes that Tara Vanderveer's ego is the reason Kate Paye will be
retained (another unsupported assertion) despite being
the reason for all the departures (a further conjecture) is the most rank speculation that degrades the discussion here., not to mention demeans a great coach without a shred of evidence.

I had a private dinner wtih Fred LUskin (stanford foregiveness project) in fall of 2024, and learned that he was getting involved with the team and consistently sitting behind the bench. THis gave me optimism that we could and would address some of the negativity on the team that happened in the Betts year. Does anyone know if this past season he was involved? stating the obvious, any efforts did not seem to "stick" this year in terms of increasing morale & reducing defections.
