Re: MSoc championship game - washingtonismoney - 12-13-2015

Next year, by the by, should be interesting. The talent lost -- Verso, Thompson, Vincent, Morris (I presume) -- is obviously considerable. But then again, if you return Baird, Bashti, Nana-Sinkam, Hilliard-Arce, Langsdorf...well, that ain't bad.

What will we do without our annual spring quarter hand-wringing over who will win this year's championship? (Not that I'd mind if we won a few more...)  ;)

Seattle Sounders beat writer on Morris (remember, if Morris goes pro and plays in the U.S., it'd be with Seattle):

Engage in our our annual spring quarter hand-wringing over Directors' cup points?

Hopefully not; I'm pretty sure Ukropina is returning, as well as all the other P/K specialists.

I'm just kidding, but check this board after the spring game and his 3 missed field goals.

I remember that. Guess I missed the joke.  :-\

Re: MSoc championship game - scorecard - 12-13-2015

Surprised no one mentioned this celebration after the 4th goal, which means Verso played the whole game in a sports bra, just hoping he would score!

The whole team wears those -- they're sensors that detect heart rate, etc. Allows the coaches to figure out who's tired or not. Ubiquitous in worldwide soccer (on the practice field; they're banned for actual games.) Some gridiron football teams are starting to use similar devices (FSU, for one, I believe).

EDIT: here's an article: http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/writer/dennis-dodd/24571047/national-champ-jimbo-fishers-secret-weapon-it-comes-from-australia

Re: MSoc championship game - scorecard - 12-13-2015

Ah, I stand corrected.  Sports BRO, it is.  The AP article made it sound like it was just a sports bra, and frankly, I think that version would have been much more hilarious ...

It clear.y didn't help UCF this year.

That may not be true, except in the W/L column! But all technology is only as good as it is employed by the user.

Re: MSoc championship game - Leftcoast - 12-14-2015

Two thoughts:

** Of COURSE Stanford is an early adopter of tech in sports.  How many college soccer level teams are using this?  My guess, not many.

**  I wonder if we use this in football?  Could be very helpful, especially for the defense.

Re: MSoc championship game - BostonCard - 12-14-2015

By the way, regardless of what he had on or why, it was a pretty cool tribute to Chastain.  Just curious if there was a story behind that (Chastain was a Santa Clara Bronco and, for a year, played across the Bay), or if Verso was just channeling an iconic moment.

Re: MSoc championship game - StanfordMatt - 12-14-2015

Doubt there was any symbolism involved on Verso's part. Soccer players take off their jerseys following goals like football players spike footballs after touchdowns. Baird did the same after his game winner in OT to beat Wake Forest.

Was he wears Ng the thing that time, too?

Re: MSoc championship game - Viking_Guy - 12-14-2015

Matt--

FYI, the site got it wrong - it was Foster heading in the ball off a free-kick from Corey.

So Ferrari, it was Foster showing off a la Brandi Chastain.

Re: MSoc championship game - StanfordMatt - 12-14-2015

Thanks VG! And yes ferrari, Foster and the other two players who joined that celebration sans shirt were all wearing the monitor.
