Re: Scouting report on Kansas state? - Hulk01 - 08-23-2016

I'm a Bill Snyder fan, and always root for Dabo Swinney, Mark Deantonio,  and Mike McIntyre.

Before last season's drop off, Snyder's teams had gone 28-9 in his last four Big 12 seasons.  That's damn good.

And I liked the KSU fans I met in 1999 when they invaded San Diego for the Holiday Bowl.

We have better players, but those guys will have to be ready because Snyder's teams play hard all game.
And they're a very good road team: 15-9 in conference road games over the last five years.

For last year's Rose Bowl, that particular context was irrelevant. At least a fraction of our corn-fed friends were booing the LSJUMB in the parade and in pregame. There was at least a segment of the Iowa fan base who showed up determined to be offended by that bunch of hippy, drugged-out, elitist, California kids in the unconventional band.

... and they were down five touchdowns at half.

A Fox Sports SW writer in Texas thinks we will finish 3rd in the BIGXII, but still has us losing to Stanford. I am trying not to think of the hype our season would have if we started with a win.

Sidenote for those unaware, Snyder is a stickler for on field discipline. We very rarely make mental mistakes in games (i.e. penalties) and that tends to help us with tight contests. Seems to be something that sports casters always mention in league play.

Well, we better make sure it's not a tight game then!

Bottom half of the projected Big 12 standings look very weak.  After TCU and OU, no one to garner national attention.  Makes TCU vs OU's head to head game winner likely punching a ticket to the playoffs.  Not at all like the every weekend dog fight in the Pac 10 (OSU and CU not good enough for dog fights yet). Conference depth is not yet a blessing in making the playoffs.  Hope KSU can cause some problems for the top dogs.

And there is a similarly-sized fraction of our fan base who apparently show up determined to be disgusted by our opponents' narrow-mindedness, parochialism and lack of our sophistication.  And after all, our band promotes its hippiness and affinity for inebriation so it's hardly surprising that the "brand" sticks.

Re: Scouting report on Kansas state? - Mauser - 08-23-2016

Great rundown DC.  The only thing I would add is that we always have great special teams play.  We have a great kicker in McCrane. He has gone 25-26 in career field goals.

We also have always had a well above average return game. I'm not sure who is returning kicks and punts this year but they will score points in Big 12 play for sure.

There aren't any more Locketts around, are there?  Those guys were dangerous for opponents.

Kind of a sign of the times, if you ask me. There is a fairly large segment of our citizenry that is looking for things to be offended by because they enjoy screaming, yelling and acting outraged.

Not at the moment, but I know there was a younger one that was wanting to don the purple. Not sure if he will be college age or not yet by the 2021 Stanford game in Manhattan.

Re: Scouting report on Kansas state? - Papa John - 08-24-2016

I've been lurking for a bit, as I'm actually conflicted about the Stanford-KSU game. I was born and raised in Manhattan, KS. In fact, before I arrived at Stanford, the farthest west I had traveled was Brookville, KS, west of Salina. When I was a kid, the Wildcats were so bad--Ellis Rainsberger anyone?--and blowouts so frequent, that the home sections of the football stadium would empty out during the second half. So the stadium staff let in folks for free at the beginning of the fourth quarter. I saw a lot of great second- and third-stringers for Oklahoma, Nebraska and the like during those days.

In any case, one week from Friday, my childhood team will take on my alma mater. I'll cheer on Stanford, but will feel bad for K-State if/when the Wildcats lose.

And for folks who haven't noticed or haven't cared enough to look it up, DC Cat's slogan, EMAW, stands for "Every Man A Wildcat."

Aha!
I knew we'd have a Manhattanite around somewhere.

It's one of the things I find interesting about Stanford's intersectional games - we usually have a collection of fans for whom that other team is their secondary allegiance.

Re: Scouting report on Kansas state? - Mauser - 08-24-2016

PJ how long has it been since you have been back home?

BTW do you have to take this quiz every time you post?

Re: Scouting report on Kansas state? - fullmetal - 08-24-2016

Mauser: You take the quiz for maybe the first 10 posts you make, and then you're declared "not a bot" by the board software, after which you can post unfettered.  It's a decent compromise to keep all the spambots off of these forums...

K-State has always been respectable, and their fan base even more so.  OU wishes it had K-State's civility :)

Thanks, fullmetal. I was just about to post that.

much appreciated!

Mauser, I was last home six years ago for my MHS senior class reunion. I missed the most recent reunion, but I'm planning on visiting next year if my work schedule allows. I'm having Vistaburger withdrawal.

You are going to be shocked at how different everything is when you return. KState has been pouring money into new buildings for classrooms, dorms, the rec center, NBAF, and converting the campus to a walking only campus. On top of that Manhattan itself is changing. I traveled there for a wedding a few weekends ago and it was a shock.

Will you be wearing cardinal or purple on the 2nd?

Re: Scouting report on Kansas state? - Mauser - 08-25-2016

Varney's closed.  :(

I also haven't been on Stanford's campus in a while, so I guess I'll be in for two shocks: one in Manhattan and the other in Palo Alto, whenever I'm able to return to either locale.

If I were able to make it up to Stanford for the game next Friday, I'd probably wear my K-State t-shirt and most recent Stanford Rose Bowl hat. That might make for some interesting conversations. As it is, I'll watch the game at home with my son.

Aggieville has always had a lot of business turnover, but that's big news about Varney's Bookstore. Friends of mine from high school worked there, and I even had a brief summer gig as a Varney's janitor.

That's one less historical landmark to show on my CARDBoard tailgate tour in 2021...
