I've been lurking for a couple of weeks. Out of an overabundance of politeness, I've been generally trying to keep Band suspension talk out of boards that are primarily devoted to Stanford athletics. Besides, I find it difficult to talk about the suspension without resorting to base vulgarities and invitations to perform anatomically improbable acts. It's a weakness.
That said, if there's anything new to report about the situation, you may find me chiming in on the stickied post up above.

I always prefer great finishes to blowouts, even against the Weenies.
2011 football @ U$C. The greatest football game I have ever attended
1987 baseball vs. LSU @ college world series. Freshman Paul Carey's walk-off grand slam

1990 Big Game - how to quckly make 50,000 Weenies go from absolute bedlam to dead silence

I'm sure there are many more but those four came to mind first.

You have a stronger constitution than I, Winflop. I was there for the 1990 BG, and was ecstatically happy. But when I watched on tape a week later, I almost had a heart attack watching the last couple of minutes. This despite the fact that I knew exactly what was going to happen...

I'll give a shoutout to the Greatest. Upset. Ever. I missed the middle part of the game, because my wife and I took my son--who was about to turn one--to the local pumpkin patch. We returned home in time to watch the fourth quarter, and that was when my son learned that his male parental unit was nuts for Stanford football.

I was there, too, and it's among my favorite Stanford football memories. When we went for two after the McCaffrey TD, I stood up, looked heavenward and, speaking to a god I really didn't believe in, told her, "You owe us one." When the pass failed, I slumped back to the bleacher seat, despondent. The lord works in mysterious ways.

CI, you should have been sitting with one of my buddies (who also rallied to El Paso) during the 1990 Big Game. When the 2-point conversion failed and the entire Cal student section began swarming the field, he said: "That's a 15 yard penalty. We get the onside kick and we're in business!"
Of course, after the late hit penalty, the same guy saw the flag immediately and said "That's another 15 yards. 38 yard field go try. That's a
chip shot for Med School!"Â (You may recall the name of our kicker at the time).
Anyway, the phrase "That's a chip shot for Med School!" has joined the Pantheon of Great Sports Utterances amongst our group of die-hards.

I was sitting in the K.al section (what the hey, I was with one of my oldest friends, and the ticket was free). When the conversion was intercepted, the K.al guy next to me looked absolutely disgusted and dejected. I said "what's the matter with you, you guys just won the game." He said -- ever so prophetically -- "they'll find a way to screw it up." The joys of being a K.al fan...

That emotional up & down is what makes them great for me :)

Some that popped into my head from my days as a student:
MBB Chris Hernandez sinking three free throws with .2 seconds on the clock to send the game against UW into OT (which we won).
WVB vs UW in 2004 in 5 games, coming from down 2-0. Turned around a season that wasn't looking great, and led to the championship. It might have been the best Stanford sports game I have seen live.
WBB Elite 8 in 2008. After I think three (or four) straight season of losing in the elite 8, followed by a second round loss, we finally beat Maryland to make the Final Four (and made the finals). Mostly because I was so tired of seeing us lose in the Elite 8, we were pretty ecstatic to make the final four, and it started a run of final four appearances.

Regarding the 1990 Big Game:
The joy of seeing the ending live in the stadium, for me, may have been equaled when leaving. I did the usual - walked due west down through the campus to the Berkeley BART station. While riding the escalator down, there was all sorts of hooting and hollering by Stanford fans. There was a woman behind me - a C.al fan, maybe around 40 - looking
very unhappy. She snapped at us, "Well, we will enjoy the Copper Bowl while you go to the toilet bowl". My mind was spinning with comebacks, and I had a cruel one teed up, but I realized it wasn't necessary. I just let her stew in her own miserable state. 26 years later, that event still brings a smile to my face.
Re: The heights of Stanford joy -

The first football game I saw as a Stanford student was a loss to Army. Two weeks later I celebrated after Ken Naber kicked the longest FG in Stanford history on the last play of the game to beat UCLA. Later in the season, Stanford came back from a 21-0 halftime deficit to tie #1 U.SC. It was the only blemish on the T.rojans record that season. A few weeks later, Stanford lost to Oregon State, one of the worst teams in the country. It was the Beavers only win all year. And Stanfords season ended with a Big Game loss on the final play of the game.
That 5-5-1 season firmly defined the emotional rollercoaster of being a Stanford fan. There would be euphoric highs. And crushing, perhaps inexplicable losses. I wrote on the other thread about some of the latter that I have experienced. These are some of my favorite memories from nearly 40 years watching Stanford across all sports in person, on tv and on web streams.
I keep a list of top games that I have attended. #1 is 1990 Big Game. I dont think anything could ever top it which is why I have not been back to Berkeley since for a football game.
1986 UCLA first time I ever attended a game at the Rose Bowl. Stanford won 26-23 thanks to Brad Muster who rushed for nearly 200 yards. The Band was banned for this trip. So I borrowed a band jacket from a friend and wore it to the game to show my support. AD Andy Geiger did a double take when I walked past him.
1991 U.SC first Stanford win vs. U.SC in 16 years. Bob Whitfield was a freshman starting LT. His family and friends were in the rows in front of me. The game was great but the memory is still vivid because of how much fun they had and how loudly they cheered. And how satisfying it was *finally* to beat the T.rojans.
2000 U.SC Chris Lewis to Jamien McCullem for a TD on the final play of the game to beat the T.rojans.
2011 U.SC Another all time great game. We along with the other Stanford fans had such crappy seats behind the end zone that we were 150 yards from the games final play. The only way I could tell what happened was to watch the video board.
2013 Rose Bowl never thought I would live to see Stanford win a Rose Bowl. And I got to enjoy the game and share the experience with my brother, also a Stanford alum. I cried when Stepfan Taylor moved the chains one last time to allow Stanford to run out the clock.
Other sports
1981 MBB win over UCLA. I was one of the managers for this team and was working the bench when Stanford upset the Bruins which had 4 starters returning from the prior years national runner up. Stanford stars included frosh Keith Jones, John Revelli and the late Hans Wichary who coolly drilled a jumper from the corner to seal the win. Probably the 2nd greatest upset at Maples in the 1980s.
1999 MBB season opener. Stanford beat Duke at Madison Square Garden in OT and I got Bill Murrays autograph before the game. That was a really good day.
Stanford has won 111 NCAA team championships. I have seen one in person 2015 women's water polo over UCLA. Tangible evidence of a job well done.
In 2013 I was at the reception in LA for the coaches while Stanford womens tennis was playing Texas A&M for the NC. I watched the final set of the final match on a phone alongside one of the AD staffers in the back of the room. When Kristie Ahn won her match the staffer signaled Bernard Muir who was about to address the group. He told the crowd, When we began the evening, Stanford had 103 national championships. We now have 104. You can imagine the cheers.
And the highlights keep coming womens tennis last year was the height of drama, match after match in the tourney. WVP this year was unbelievable. But the one that for me stands above all of those NC runs was womens golf in 2015. What Mariah Stackhouse and her Baylor opponent pulled off on the final holes of their match was phenomenal. With all of the pressure of a national championship on her shoulders and no margin for a single mistake after falling 2 holes down with 2 to play, Stackhouse finished birdie-birdie then won on the 19th hole. I get chills just writing about what happened.
Ill close with some words about U.SC 2007. Ill never forget the date of that game October 6, 2007. But the reason that date is forever in my memory is that is the day my mom told us that she had leukemia. Everything else that happened that day was kind of surreal. Her note included a quote whose words always come back to me Circumstances do color life . . so, what color is it going to be? Ill take mine cardinal and white.

I will never forget January 7, 2019, when Stanford beat Michigan in the national championship game at Levi's Stadium. Mills threw a long touchdown pass to Stewart on the final play of regulation to tie the game and another on the first play of OT to Kaden Smith, who was all alone down the middle. Malik Antoine intercepted a pass in the end zone to end the game, and the whole place went nuts, including Harbaugh, who had to be helped off the field. Stanford 34, Michigan 27. :)

Nice call on Stackhouse's come-from-behind miracle last year in the golf championship.

Very cool that you could link it to the exact play after 1.5 hours of YouTube video. Didn't know you could do that.
I was there that day because of reunion not to mention random fandom and it was exhilirating. There's nothing quite like beating those guys.

I had a similar post-game moment after the 2000 Big Game - our sixty consecutive victory. I was walking down Frat Row and some drunk Weenie pledge yelled from his house rooftop "Stanford sucks!" One of the Stanford fans in front of me yelled back, "Dude, you were in middle school the last time Kal won Big Game." Even the guy's frat brothers were laughing at that one.
