Re: WSwim national championship meet preview - Langdude - 03-18-2017

Thanks, DenverCard. That's helpful.

Yes, totally aware that the other three were Olympians and that they are, in fact, more accomplished than Ella. I was just noting how ridiculously stacked this team is that Ella could be considered the fourth-best on the team when just about anywhere else she'd be tops. Incredible.

Also knew she won NCAAs last year, but did not realize that there is a 3-event individual limit, so it makes sense that she'd forego 200 free. Amazing that she could probably score points in an event that she passes on because she is even better in three other events! Wow.

It just shows how crazy good this team is. Reminds me of some of the men's teams in the early-to-mid 90s.

Re: WSwim national championship meet preview - Treefence - 03-18-2017

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems we just need to avoid getting DQ'd in any races, and we will win the national championship, even if our swimmers/divers have a bad final day.

Re: WSwim national championship meet preview - BobK - 03-18-2017

The prelims are over and we didn't have a bad day with one exception.
3 pm for the finals

With the projected scores, we could get DQ'ed in the relay and still win by more than 100 points.
How dominant is this team?  The projected score indicates that they could have been DQ'ed in 4 of the 5 relays and still win.
Stanford's score at the end of Friday is higher than the projected 2nd place score at the end of the meet.

(Unfortunately the "Live Results" feed at SideArmSports is again not being updated.  They don't have all of Friday's prelims and none of today's.)

What's the record championship winning team score?  Do we have a chance at it?

Re: WSwim national championship meet preview - Spiny_Norman - 03-18-2017

Stanford goes 1-3-4 in the 1650 Free (Ledecky, Byrnes, Stevens).

Team scoring through event 15 of 21:

1. Stanford                        425.5
2. California                        255

Re: WSwim national championship meet preview - Spiny_Norman - 03-18-2017

Through 16 events, swimmers from Stanford or C.al have won 13 of them.  Take away the 1 and 3 meter diving and the two schools have won 13 of 14 swimming events.

Stanford holds it at 746 (1991).  I wonder if they had 3 finals per event (as PAC-12 championship did this year) vs 2 (championship & consolation) as in this NCAA national championship.

Re: WSwim national championship meet preview - BobK - 03-18-2017

Congrats to the women's swim team. What a great convincing win.

Re: WSwim national championship meet preview - fullmetal - 03-18-2017

All over Twitter :)  #112 in the books!  Congrats to the team for handling expectations and delivering a first-place performance!

Seth Wells can't read a results sheet.  He doesn't have Cal in the top 5.    :o

Re: WSwim national championship meet preview - 82lsju - 03-19-2017

Stanford claimed its first women's swimming and diving national title since 1998 on Saturday. The Cardinal had 13 different All-Americans combine for 47 All-America honors, seven individual national championships and three relay titles during the four-day NCAA championship meet inside IUPUI Natatorium.

Stanford women just rock.

Re: WSwim national championship meet preview - CornFed - 03-19-2017

What a wonderful group of young women comprise this championship swimming and diving team.  You all do, indeed, rock.

The streak is alive and we are fast closing in on the lead for all-time number of championships.  It is a great time to be a fan of Stanford!  May our blessings continue and may we be forever grateful for this abundance.

So any chance we catch up *this year*?  Do we have some good chances coming up?  WWP maybe?

STOLEN: Baker gets CSCAA Swimmer of the Year - M T - 03-19-2017

I see that Kathleen Baker was given CSCAA Swimmer of the Year.

SORRY, THAT'S SILLY.

Maybe she was high point winner of the meet (but not swimmer of the meet) as she had one more (non-DQed) relay than Ledecky, but NO WAY should she have been chosen as swimmer of the YEAR, nor even swimmer of the meet.

2017 NCAA Accomplishments:
Ledecky:
1650 Free: NCAA, American, US Open record (11/20/16); NCAA meet record & a dominating 21 second win. Conference & NCAA champion.
1000 Free:  NCAA, American, US Open record. Top time of the year
200 Free: NCAA champion (tied) Top time of the year (tied).
500 Free: NCAA, American, US Open, NCAA meet record (3/16/17) & a dominating 4 second win. Conference & NCAA champion.
800 Free Relay: NCAA, American, US Open, NCAA meet record (3/15/17) & a dominating 5.5 second win. Conference & NCAA champion.
400 Free Relay: NCAA, American, US Open, NCAA meet record (3/18/17) & a strong 1.3 second win. Conference & NCAA champion.
400 IM: 3rd fastest swim ever (2/24/17, was an American record until broken at the meet), Conference champion.
Contributed to the winning NCAA team.
Contributed to the winning PAC-12 conference team
Contributed to the undefeated Stanford swimming & diving team

Baker:
200 IM: NCAA champion, Top time of the year
200 Back: NCAA champion, Top time of the year.  Conference champion
100 Back: NCAA champion, 2nd best time of the year.
200 Medley Relay: Contributed to the 1st place NCAA (2nd conference) team, NCAA, US Open record (not American).
800 Free Relay:  Contributed to the 2nd place (conference & NCAA) team.
400 Free Relay: Contributed to the 3rd place NCAA (2nd conference) team
400 Medley Relay: Contributed to the 2nd place conference (NCAA DQ) team
Contributed to the 2nd place NCAA team.
Contributed to the 2nd place PAC-12 conference team
Contributed to the once-defeated Cal swimming & diving team

WWP is now ranked #2 because they lost a game in OT by one goal against USC in Irvine.  We play at USC in early April, and then presumably meet up against them later that month at MPSF championships in Los Angeles (USC? UCLA?) and perhaps mid-May at NCAA championships in Indianapolis.

(USC just had a 1-goal squeaker over #8 Hawaii, but they are up to 48 consecutive wins.)

WWP has a pretty darn good shot at it, and from what I've seen women's tennis (#4 I think?) and men's gymnastics (#2, came close behind #1 Oklahoma and defeated #3 Illinois) both also realistically have a shot.
