Re: WBB: Stanford @ Kansas State Monday 3:30 pm - BostonCard - 03-20-2017

We end the third quarter at 50-32, despite at one point being up 47-22.  Still, an 18 point lead is more than Kansas State has gotten in any single quarter so far, so I think we'll be ok.

Oregon extended their lead over Duke to 53-42 after the third quarter.  Can't believe I'm saying this, but go Ducks.

Re: WBB: Stanford @ Kansas State Monday 3:30 pm - M T - 03-20-2017

Huh? What was that call at 4:57.  You can clearly see "1" on the shot clock (the real one, not the TV) after the whistle has blown.  The announcers claim it was a shot clock violation.  ????

Probably called by the same official who was looking at the clock and called the 10 second violation without looking to see if the ball had crossed midcourt.

Re: WBB: Stanford @ Kansas State Monday 3:30 pm - TheFarm07 - 03-20-2017

We win 69-48 as we applied the finishing touches on the game. Brit added her 5th 3-pointer and finished with 21 points (7-14 FG%, 5-7 3P%), 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Alanna was right behind her with 19 points on 7-13 shooting and 7 rebounds as well. Karlie only had 3 shot attempts, but made 2 of them to finish with 6 points as her teammates were able to fill in for her. McCall had a quiet 10 points on 5-11 shooting with 6 rebounds.

Bri was scoreless going 0-5 from the field, but her defense contributed to holding KSU to under 40% shooting. Though their star guard Wesermann went 5/6, she was held to only 11 points and their post Lewis only had 9 points on 3-7 shooting as we double-teamed her and prevented entry passes into the post.

We also had 23 assists on 26 made baskets, which is a tremendous ratio and outrebounded the Wildcats 40-25.

Now we go to Lexington for a rematch with Texas!

Re: WBB: Stanford @ Kansas State Monday 3:30 pm - BostonCard - 03-20-2017

We won 69-48, and had more points by the end of the third quarter than KSU had all game.  McPhee with 20; Smith with 19.

Onto the sweet sixteen!

Oregon is up 68-60 with about a minute to go, so good chance they will pull off the upset.

Oregon upset Duke 74-65 with Ionescu just scoring 10 points

I have to say, as Oregon finishes off the Dukies, that I am more concerned about the Ducks in the long-term than I am Oregon State.  They both have great coaches, but the Beavers don't have the Knight money behind their athletics.

Against Baylor, I will pull for Cal.  Go PAC-12!

Re: WBB: Stanford @ Kansas State Monday 3:30 pm - UltimateCard - 03-20-2017

Wow, Britt!!! Team leader in total points, three pointers made, rebounds (tie), o-boards (tie), and blocks (tie)!!! Plus she nearly tied in assists!

Why they call it the dance - M T - 03-20-2017

Baylor ball, 1st quarter, 5.8 left (just after a terrible out of bounds call gave Baylor the ball):
Catch, Right, Left, Right, Right, Left, dribble
A little Texas 4-step

Re: WBB: Stanford 69 Kansas State 48 - chimera - 03-20-2017

Nice showing today from the conference so far.  Well, not cal, but I did not expect much from them against Baylor.  Cal has as much talent as teams that do much better.  I don't think Gottlieb is that good.  As for us, nice effort, very nice.  Helps a ton when we start well, doesn't it?  Solid game from everyone, good defense, nice shooting from Brit, Good game from Alanna, quiet game but a good one from Bird, and we roll.  UW is leading Oklahoma now and UCLA is up early.  We might have 5 teams in the Sweet 26!

Go Pac-12 indeed, although kal seems overwhelmed if the score is any indication.  UCLA up early on A&M, and UW naturally taking it to OU.  All is as expected.

Re: WBB: Stanford 69 Kansas State 48 - Spiny_Norman - 03-20-2017

Did KState stay in the zone the entire game?  Sure was nice to see how the team attacked it.  They looked very prepared for everything that KState wanted to do.

Barring a miracle comeback (which Texas A&M did in the last round against Penn, but I don't think they'll repeat that against the Bruins), the Pac-12 will go 5-2 in the second round (the top 4 seeds were expected, but Oregon's upset over Duke was a nice surprise).

Kelly Graves is off to a great start with the Oregon program, especially his freshman recruiting class of Ionescu, Hebard, McGwire and Campisano. That's a great foundation for him to build off of and then this Sweet 16 run will add valuable postseason experience to that team. They only lose 2 seniors and they don't seem to be critical components, so I think Oregon will be a top contender in the coming years

Re: WBB: Stanford 69 Kansas State 48 - 81alum - 03-20-2017

Write up is finally done at the top.  A nice win.

Yes, I have felt all year long that Oregon was shaping up to be our top competition over the next few years.

And now 5 of the sweet 16 are Pac-12.  That is outstanding.

Re: WBB: Stanford 69 Kansas State 48 - TheFarm07 - 03-20-2017

Gametime is up for the Texas game: 6PM PST on Friday, March 24th. We're the second game of the regional after N.D. and Ohio State square off.

PAC-12 in the WBB tourney - M T - 03-20-2017

For bragging rights at this point in the tournament, I'd give the nod to MAAC, with the PAC-12 on their heels.

Counting teams in the tourney is subject to selection committee/ranking bias.  Wins by seeded teams doesn't seem terribly informative. (Really, how much credit should be given to Bullyor for beating Texas Southern by a big score?)  That means that saying the PAC-12 is 9-1 isn't terribly meaningful until you dig down a bit.

But counting upsets, and by how many seeded positions, does give credit where it is due.

MAAC +15:  12 Quinnipiac vs 5 Marquette; 12 Quinnipiac vs 4 Miami
PAC-12  +12:  10 Oregon vs 7 Temple;  9 California vs 8 LSU;  10 Oregon vs 2 Duke
BIG 10  0 +2:  5 Ohio St vs 4 Kentucky;  9 Purdue vs 8 Green Bay
<other conferences in the tourney but not upset>: 0
Horizon  -1:  9 Purdue vs 8 Green Bay
SEC -2:  9 California vs 8 LSU;  5 Ohio St vs 4 Kentucky
AAC -3:  10 Oregon vs 7 Temple
ACC -8:  12 Quinnipiac vs 4 Miami

Re: WBB: Stanford 69 Kansas State 48 - BostonCard - 03-20-2017

Except your formulation is not right either because you give an 8 seed the same credit for beating a 9 seed as you give a 16 seed for beating a 1 seed.  The best way to calculate the answer is to look at historical probabilities and actual versus expected wins.  I can't find the numbers for the women, but they are available for men: http://bracketodds.cs.illinois.edu/seedadv.html

So, for a two seed like us, 93.8% make it to the second round and 63.3% make it to the sweet sixteen, so the average number of wins is equal to 1.571.  We have two wins, so we exceeded expectations so far by .429 wins.  However, the average total number of wins for two seeds is 2.4, so if we lost in the next round, we would have underperformed by 0.4 games.

Of course, as I mentioned, that number is for the men, and there is less parity for the women, so those numbers are off.

That's not what I did.  12 Quinnipiac beating 5 Marquette  got 7 points.    8 beating 9 9 beating 8 gets 1 point.
