Looked like Alanna went to locker room when she came out last time

We are down 29-36 at halftime. We are ice cold from long range: 2/13. Brit and Bri both have 2 fouls and Carrington has logged in minutes and contributed a 3. However, we look sluggish and lost on offense.
Erica is the hot hand in the first half going 6/9, but she has little help. Smith is 1/6, McPhee is 1/4 and Karlie is 2/7.
Defensively, Texas has started gaining confidence and despite holding Holmes to limited minutes and 1/5 shooting, she came in the end of the quarter and participated in a 7-0 run to end the half and give the Longhorns a 7 point advantage.
As I warned before the game, we need to make shots. We cannot afford to go cold in the game. Texas is too good offensively and has too many weapons for us to rely solely on our defense to win this game.
It's a bad sign for us when McCarty and Holmes, arguably their two best players only have 11 combined points, yet they are up by 7. Sutton is 2/2 from long range and Caron-Goudreau is 4/6.
We can't wait until the 4th quarter to rally. Tara needs to work her magic at halftime.

That's not good, but we've seen her go in the locker room and come back out fine, like she did in the Pac-12 tournament

This game is painful to watch.
When I tuned in we were up 16-9 and Tezas was missing every shot they threw up. Since then Texas has outscored us 25-13 and we look sluggish.
McPhee is just standing around -- where is that aggressiveness she's had lately?
Karlie needs to take those mid-range jumpers when she penetrates past the foul line.
McCall needs to stop thinking she's a three-point threat. She's playing hard inside and that's where we need her.
Here's hoping for a turnaround -- we just look so offensively challenged. We can't rely on Texas going cold again.

six-point "possession" makes life more palatable. #gostanford
(Karlie trey and one->missed free throw but O board->Britt trey)

A great 25-12 third quarter puts us up 5 after 3.
Re: WBB: Stanford vs. Texas Friday 6:30 Pacific -
TheFarm07 - 03-24-2017
We lead 54-49 after three quarters as we outscored Texas 25-13 due to a fantastic start to the quarter and timely shooting by one Miss Karlie Samuelson.
The third quarter started off as good as it can get, 6 points on one trip down the floor. Karlie gets fouled on a made 3-pointer and a rare free throw miss turns into an offensive rebound and a made 3-pointer by Brit, trimming the Texas lead from 7 to just 1 in about one minute of play into the third. You can't ask for much more.
Marta however has had a couple of bad decisions, which led to 4 easy points on 2 fastbreak layups.
Erica got a rebound from a missed pass by Holmes inside that bounced off the backboard back towards Erica, and she was able to go on a fastbreak layup.
Karlie picked it up from long range to power our offense, draining 3-pointers and making up for points that we've left out, including missed free throws by Kaylee and a failed fast break conversion that led to a McPhee offensive foul.
Erica has 18 points on 8/12 shooting, but she has 3 fouls heading into the last quarter, so she'll have to be careful not to pick up a bad foul.
We need a third option beyond Erica and Karlie. Alanna and Brit, who have been our offensive stars the last few games have been relatively quiet with 8 and 6 points respectively. Hopefully, one of them can pick it up

Stanford has had better teams than this season.
I do not think they have one as tough and gritty as this team.
Beat the Irish on Sunday!!

We win 77-66 and move on to face N.D. in the Elite Eight!!
Texas cut our lead down to 3 with just under 6 minutes, but a brilliant pass from Erica to Brit, who caught the ball and made the layup despite three orange jerseys surrounding her, extended the lead back up to 6. Bri also made a big three when she was left open after missing a couple before. Texas didn't go away though and threatened as they got within 4 on a couple more occasions, but when Alanna nailed a couple free throws with under 2 minutes to extend the lead back up to 6, we were able to play some lockdown defense and extend the lead. Despite missing half of our free throws at the end of the game (fortunately, it didn't matter - but we left the door cracked open a bit), we were able to preserve the lead and advance.
Marta did not have a good game, especially from the perspective of the point guard, who needs to make the right decisions. I've counted at least half a dozen decisions that led to turnovers or missed scoring opportunities -- precious lost opportunities for points in a tight game. She finished with just 1 point, missing all 4 of her field goals and turning the ball over 4 times with only 3 assists. But she came up big late in the game with a steal in the waning minutes.
Erica is MVP of the game with a double-double (23 pts on 9/14 shooting) and 12 rebounds, but most importantly grabbed 6 offensive rebounds and chipping in much needed points off of our missed shots.
Karlie uncharacteristically missed 2 free throws, but I don't mind the first one as it led to that switch of momentum at the beginning of the third quarter. She finished with 15 points on 5/11 shooting and 4/8 from long range.
McPhee and Alanna cooled off from their hot streaks recently, but both still had double digit scoring games and their recent success prevented Texas's defense from completely collapsing on Erica or focusing too much on Karlie.
Defensively, we did a great job on McCarty who only had 8 points on 4/14 shooting and though Joyner had 15 points, she needed 13 shot attempts to get there. Atkins had a team-high 18 points for Texas, but we also made her work for them (6/14).
N.D. looked like it didn't skip a beat even without Turner scoring just one point shy of the century mark in dismantling Ohio State. Obviously, Turner's absence leaves a big gap inside. But their guards picked it up as they went small and we've struggled mightily against quick, agile guards with the NM State game as the latest example.

That was great. Cold shooting from three for too much of the game, but aside from that, we played pretty well the whole game, better in the second half for sure. Bird was great inside. Once Karlie got going, we got a small lead, kept it, and then pulled away late. Very nice effort by the whole team.Â

Ugh, we get the morning game on Sunday. I think it was very good that we didn't go back to campus after the Kansas State win. I think being in the Midwest for the last week plus, will help us for a 9AM (West Coast Time) start against N.D.

Erica McCall was outstanding tonight. In some ways, it was a frustrating game to watch, as Stanford clearly was outplaying Texas but also letting them hang around.

So proud of our team for coming out with the W. Bring on ND.
Will Lili Thompson be in attendance? Who does she root for? Awkward? :P

We were lucky that 3 play sequence by Marta didn't hurt us more - especially that missed wide open layup - but it did let Texas hang around

I agree. Changing the subject, the officials take way too long to review plays on video. There has to be a way to speed that up. Also there are too many timeouts at the end of a game for the casual fan to stay engaged. The last five minutes probably lasted about twenty minutes. I stuck with the game because I am a Stanford fan. Many others probably went channel surfing and never returned.

Agree with the reviews taking too long. It also happened in the Gonzaga vs WV men's game yesterday that I had a need to watch. The outcome was obvious, the play-by-play and color guys pretty much called it right away, and yet it took forever for the obvious to be the "official" decision. At best, it turns the casual fan off. At worst, it shifts the entire complexion of the game, momentum-wise, flow-wise, etc.

The officiating was very inconsistent. Anything went in the first half, but lots of stuff got called in the fourth quarter. This favored us down the stretch but I think it discombobulated Smith in particular in the first half. It seems like the only fouls for the whole half were on us and were moving screens.
The write up is done at the top.

What a great win. Loved the Thompson comment but thats why hope we win Sun. On good authority I was told the black ref (just for identification) wanted to give the inbounds to Texas but guess what Missy said it was Stanford and called the other ref in for her opinion, who woulda thunk it ;) Thought that same ref was going to pull a NC State debacle. Quick turnaround will be hard for McCall and samuelson, hope they get some kind of special treatment. We will be able to play small ball with ND and over play. They are not quick but spread the floor. 2 bigs would be a liability.

I don't know. I kinda enjoyed watching Missy being shown up as being wrong,
Over, and Over, and Over, and Over, and Over....
Great effort, Stanford. Yeah, there were mistakes, but D ruled the day. Except for the 2nd quarter, the Texas guards just couldn't contribute, and we controlled the paint well enough, and definitely controlled the boards (mainly due to forcing Texas to take not great shots).
It turns out Texas is a decent yardstick to compare a number of the remaining teams:
 L 59-71 Stanford
 L 68-79 Miss State
 L 67-76 South Carolina
 L 54-72 UConn
 W 85-79 Bullyor
 W 92-78 Florida State
 L 67-70 Bullyor
 L 66-77 Stanford
If you were wondering, at 3rd 3:40, Missy called that Kaylee stepped beyond the FT line before the ball hit the rim. That is a violation. However, it followed Texas #23 having her foot beyond the edge of the FT lane AND into Bird's lane before Kaylee released the ball, either one of which is a violation. But, of course, Missy didn't see that.
Quote:Players occupying a legal marked lane space may not have either foot
beyond the vertical plane of the outside edge of any legal lane boundary
or beyond the vertical plane of any edge of space (2 by 36 inches)
designated by a legal lane space mark or beyond the vertical plane of
any edge of the lane until the ball is released by the free-thrower.

I was at the Gonzaga v. WV game. As you indicate, it was obvious to all ~16,000 spectators from the single big screen replay about 10 seconds after it happened that the call on the floor was wrong and should be overturned. There were apparently only 3 people in the entire SAP Center who weren't aware of that at the time, and all 3 were wearing striped shirts. Over the next ~5 minutes before the call was reversed, there were three separate outbursts of loud, sustained booing, and, after play resumed, it took about 60 seconds of play before the general level of energy and excitement in the arena -- which had been quite high immediately before this -- got back to even close to what it was before.
But the really crazy thing about the "go to the monitor" rule as it currently exists is that, had the ball gone out of bounds literally two seconds earlier, the bad call would presumably have been allowed to stand and play would have resumed immediately! It happened at 1:59 left on the game clock -- and the refs can only do a monitor review for an OB call in the last two minutes of regulation [or during overtime]. While I in NO WAY want to expand the time of the game during which this travesty can be perpetrated, it is insane to have a rule that results in the exact opposite call, during the game, simply because of a two-second difference on the game clock. A wrong call at any time -- not just in the last two minutes -- can be crucial. However, it is in the last two minutes that the imposition of these interminable delays probably has its most adverse effect. If calls are only going to be reviewable for two minutes, why not just make it the period from, say, 18:00 to 16:00 in the second half and, for the rest of the game, including the end -- indeed, PARTICULARLY at the end -- just tell the refs to do their job better...? ;)
Later in the evening, during the Arizona game, the officials went to the monitor for some reason that wasn't readily apparent to anyone in the arena, and, again, after a long delay and numerous conferences, one of them ran over to the TV announcers, talked for a while, and then they resumed the game. At no time did the arena announcer provide any explanation as to what was happening. Again, the crowd wasn't too happy.
After all, when you're at the game in-person, channel-surfing isn't even an option. :)
