Anyone notice this?  I thought it was a vanilla zone at the time and I'm curious how we sprung our shooters in the second half.

They ran that some while Karlie was in, with Karlie getting the "one" treatment. Sometime Tara has dealt with that by having Karlie stand way in a corner and playing 4 on 4, but once at least, they ran a play where Karlie came around and set a screen, giving another player a wide open shot. The announcers remarked on that one.

Check if you can get a replay on WatchESPN/ESPN3.

Later the announcers commented they were running a diamondtriangle and 2 (Karlie & Brittany).  Immediately Alanna sunk a wide-open three.

YES!  That's the consequence of not having a single star to shut down.

For all the comments of how well ND was shooting at half time, Stanford wound up with a better percentage in both FG and 3FG.  The team was 8/10 FT (with no FTA by Karlie).

Wow, amazing that we scored a three against six defenders.  Or maybe you meant a triangle and two?  Arizona knows it well.

Apparently, Britt asked Tara during halftime to guard Ogunbowale!
I think Britt was mainly guarding her on the first half, too; she wanted Tara to know she would do a better job on her in the second half.
[/quote]

Rick Eymer's article that I linked and Graham Hayes' piece on ESPN both mention that Britt asked Tara for the switch at halftime. I didn't watch the game - I followed it on Gametracker - so am relying on their reporting. Anyone who watched notice the defensive assignments on Ogunbowale?

Re: WBB: Stanford 76 Notre Dam 75 On McPhee's 27 - CompSci87 - 03-26-2017

From the press conference video I'm sure it's correct that it was not a switch. Britt asked to continue guarding Ogunbowale because she believed she could do much better in the second half.

In fairness to how Britt did in the first half, it was Dijonai guarding Ogunbowale on some of her first half baskets. I happened to notice that on one of the highlight sequences shown later on ESPN.

Thanks for the clarification. Whatever it was that Britt was able to summon at halftime, she ought to bottle it!

I just want to say that I appreciate that Bullyor didn't run up the score against Mississippi State.  ;)

While there are probably ESPN PR people looking forward to a possible UConn-Stanford matchup, and it might be fun for Karlie, I have to say I'd most prefer the championship game to be all PAC-12.  Go Oregon!

Re: WBB: Stanford 76 Notre Dam 75 On McPhee's 27 - Spiny_Norman - 03-27-2017

Ogunbowale was voted the Regional's Most Outstanding Player even though she played on the losing team.  In fact, there were more ND than Stanford players on the All-Tournament team.

Arike Ogunbowale
Lindsay Allen
Marina Mabrey
Brittany McPhee
Karlie Samuelson

Although Erica McCall had 32 points, 23 rebounds, 7 assists and a game winning block over the two games, I guess what she did was not as valuable as Ogunbowale, Allen or Mabrey.

Re: WBB: Stanford 76 Notre Dam 75 On McPhee's 27 - will - 03-27-2017

I am sure some others at the PAC tournament had a similar complaint as a lot were surprised she was on that team ;)

That's a shame.  But I'm sure all the ND players would trade the position on the All-Tournament team for a piece of the net, and I'm sure none of the Stanford players would do the trade.

Obviously it's absurd but I think the problem is that they vote before the regional final game is over.

They must think they need to hand the trophy out while the TV coverage lasts.  But ESPN switched away pretty quickly IIRC so no coverage for that "team" anyway.

IMHO McPhee was the MVP for Stanford -- when she got her confidence and aggressiveness we actually had an offense that consisted of more than setting screens for Karlie.

The NBA keeps a +/- stat that shows how the team fared scorewise while a player was in.  It would be really interesting to see that stat for Stanford this year.

Maybe Bird can channel Sonja Henning's response after the championship game in 1990, as reported by the Daily: "I didn't come here to make the alltournament team," Henning told reporters. "I came here to win a national championship. That's what we did." http://stanforddailyarchive.com/cgi-bin/stanford?a=d&d=stanford19900402-01.2.2&e=-------en-20--1--txt-txIN-------

Re: WBB: Stanford 76 Notre Dam 75 On McPhee's 27 - pauloalto - 03-27-2017

The KZSU announcer for the game said he had not voted for Erica for Regional's Most Outstanding Player because the vote was held with 5 minutes left in the game. He wished he could have voted later because his vote would have been different.

Paloalto, you definitely want to watch the 2nd half.  Every single basket in the 4th quarter by either team resulted in a lead change or a tie game.  Incredibly tense which made the final sequence that much more satisfying.

Mississippi St. was led by a 41-point performance by 5'5" guard Morgan William, who lost her dad three years ago yesterday. Really incredible performance.
I think Plato was right--justice consists in each getting what they deserve.  And oh...how Baylor richly deserved what it got.

Re: WBB: Stanford 76 Notre Dam 75 On McPhee's 27 - TheFarm07 - 03-27-2017

It will be interesting to see who we will face. South Carolina is the favorite against Florida State tonight, even without Alaina Coates, but then so was N.D. and Baylor in their Elite 8 matchups.

Without knowing too much about them, Florida State would seem to be the easier matchup on paper if we would face them.

Dawn Staley's team still has a lot of firepower in A'ja Wilson, Allisha Gray and Kaela Davis (those 3 scored at least 19 points each in their blowout against Quinnipaic) plus sharpshooter Cuevas-Moore to make up for the loss of Coates.

Interesting that their coach claimed they were more worried about Bird and thus let McPhee beat them. I, too, saw the triangle and two as focusing on Karlie and Britt.
