Too early to say it's a permanent (well, not freelance) gig for Lombardi. I could see him doing play-by-play or studio work for the Pac, but I'm not sure the powers-that-be want a site full of reported features like the kind Lombardi wrote for the Pac-12 blog.

I suspect he's freelancing and we will see his name on multiple outlets until he lands a permanent gig.

As a coda on all this, has anyone else noticed that ESPN removed the twitter feeds and live updates from both its main page and its sports specific pages? I assume this is because they've reduced so many of their reporters that there's not enough "new" news to keep them relevant, but it's a striking departure away from their minute-by-minute updating provided before the purge.

By the way, Kevin Gemmell, also has a new gig.

Best of luck to him.

Also for what it's worth, looks like the Pac-12 blog isn't actually dead. Being held down by Bonagura on his own.
http://www.espn.com/blog/pac12
Honestly it's not that long ago that the Pac-12 blog was just one guy. When I started reading regularly (back around 2008 or so) it was just Miller. It only got expanded when Gemmell was added to it after his work on the short lived Stanford blog. I was honestly pretty surprised with how quickly the Pac-12 blog (and I assume others) ballooned, from 1 writer to 5 in what, 7 years? 5 years? Maybe this is reverting back to the amount of content that is correct for the blog (or the amount of staff that is correct for the amount of content/news that was needed).

It's correct for the amount of respect ESPN has for Pac-12 sports and how much the west coast has responded to ESPN's monetization efforts. I guarantee there's more than one person working the $EC or Big 10 blog. Meh.

Stewart Mandel pink slip:

As many of you may have read, FoxSports.com is going in a different direction -- most notably, no longer publishing written content. Needless to say, my services will no longer be needed.
I had a wonderful three-year run working with amazing people. Keep following me here and/or on Twitter (@slmandel) so I can let you know my next destination.

Not to editorialize too much, but the ESPN decision makes far more sense than Fox's. ESPN at least isn't making any pretenses that this is cost-cutting move. I have my objections -- the reporters aren't really a drag on the bottom line; it's ESPN's rights that are -- but the logic is kind of sensible.
Fox, on the other hand, is high-grade ridiculousness. Bruce Feldman's been posting news on his Facebook page fergawdssake.

Pretty soon there will be no reporters other than the ones we pay to have, after we get tired of not having reporters.

Pretty sad, but the end of the article seems to make clear what it's all about- Fox wanted to cut costs because they weren't competing in a shrinking market. I always thought the Fox stuff was generally pretty third rate, and this new shift will only make viewers/readers like me even less likely to watch their non-live programming or read their articles, but I wasn't seeing their ads in the first place. But it does sound like a cheaper operation to run.
Bummer though. Yuck.

Maybe they'll cut costs sufficiently to make themselves a business. Don't know. But this latest pivot across the industry -- with various people singing the praises of video -- will also end in tears. Video is also fairly pricey to make work, and its economic attractiveness is based on advertisers' misguided belief that people actually watch the junk. (Podcasts are probably also a racket but for slightly different reasons.)
Anyway Facebook will someday decide people should be sharing runic texts or something. (At which point the media will ditch all the video and podcast folks and start recruiting classics majors from Hampden College.)
It seems to me the media needs to get people to pay, directly, for their product. That's the commonality between the NYT, Wapo, TPM, Politico and The Information -- probably the best performing (and best hiring) orgs on the landscape. (I am a bit biased here.)
So if you like journalism, make sure you pay for (at least some of) it.

Just wait til media/content providers start cooperating with telecom providers to track your content consumption and automatically charge you based on data consumed/time spent...

Someone told me yesterday that millennials prefer to communicate in emojis. We have come full circle, from Hieroglyphics, to the various alphabets, back to Hieroglyphics. I use emojis too, but prefer words 98% of the time.

People say lots of things about millennials. You should believe virtually none of them.
Or should I just have put 15 poop emojis here?
