Re: The Baseball Regionals - BobK - 06-03-2017

Very sad ending and the end of an era.
Wulffe's drive to the wall
A HR early in the game.  The Fullerton HR caught if late in the game.  So close

Of course would have had to win tomorrow too

Pleased 9 came out as we gathered to applaud

Here's the first in what I'm sure will be a lengthy discussion of the leader for the new era.

"Cardinals'." "Manager."

Genius.

Re: The Baseball Regionals - JJJ - 06-04-2017

Not the storybook ending I was hoping for, but still, it was one helluva season. My congratulations for all associated with the program.

That hand motion the players do after they get a key hit, I learned from a player's mom, is not a "C" for Cardinal, but more a pirate's hand (think Captain Hook). Apparently, it all began with Jack Klein always answering roll call (e.g. in the bus) with a pirate-like "ARRRRGH" and then everyone was doing it, as well as that hand (and even leg kick) motion on base. Hey, it worked pretty well.

Thank you, Stanford baseball team for a fun ride this season.

Re: The Baseball Regionals - BobK - 06-04-2017

Great post jjj.  Sad ending of course but a great season

We shall see where Gavin is drafted. Eastman just a soph.  But two outstanding pitchers

Re: The Baseball Regionals - OutsiderFan - 06-05-2017

This is post-mortem bitching, and I don't have that great of insight into the quality of the teams in the NCAA Baseball tournament, but it sure seems Stanford got a much tougher #2 seed than seeds 9-16 had.

Not a good regional weekend for the Pac-12 at all.  Stanford, UCLA, and Arizona all bounced.  Of course Oregon State is #1 in country and could win it all, but still, only four Pac-12 teams made the tournament and only one is left after regionals.

I remember back in the 80s and early 90s, the Pac-12 routinely sent 3-4 teams to the CWS annually in both baseball and softball. WTF has happened?

Interesting thing about Gavin is that he is generally not considered to be a particularly high draft pick. As far as I can tell no better than the third pitching prospect on Fullerton behind Conner Seabold (their Friday starter who won game #1) and Eastman. Possibly fourth behind Conine, their closer.

Gavin will get drafted - he's a brobdingnagian   large left hander with good stats, and was drafted in the 39th round out of high school. But, he's been particularly effective against us, and steadily improving.
His career versus Stanford is:
2015 - start game #3,  5.1 innings, 3 earned runs, 6 hits, 2 walks
2016 - start game #2,  6.0 innings, 2 earned runs, 6 hits, 1 walk
2017 - start game #2,  6.0 innings, 1 earned run,  2 hits, 2 walks
2017 - regn'l game #2, 7.0 innings, 1 earned run, 3 hits, 2 walks

Hard to say about Fullerton.

They were ranked as high as #17 in the polls, which could make them as strong as the best #2 seed. I believe they were universally ranked in the top 25 in polls.
However, their RPI was only #43, which by itself would make them a #3 seed. Fullerton was one of the teams hit hardest by the anti-western RPI bias.
Fullerton's big undoing was dropping 5 of 6 to Long Beach (who is playing a final, winner take all game vs Texas in their own regional today - winner faces Fullerton). Those were all close games, but they dropped them.

The two things that made Fullerton particularly dangerous is first that they certainly know us well - we play every year, and secondly that they were just getting Colton Eastman back, the pitcher who beat us in the final game. He was considered the top propsect on the team, though just a soph (as Bobbk noted). In our series against Fullerton to start the year he got the save in game #1 and started game #3 giving up one run. He got pulled after starting game #2 of their next series, and was just coming back at the end of the season - going 2.1 innings, 3.1 innings, 4.2 innings then 6.2 innings against us.
The Fullerton fans were very concerned that their pitching staff, while good, is not deep. Getting Eastman back was important for them.

It seems likely that Fullerton right now is among the best 2 seeds, but baseball is funny. It seems as likely as anything that they will face off against Long Beach next and continue their season-long frustrations against that team.

-----
The Pac 8/10/12 has never had four teams in the CWS. Once (in 1988, when we won it all) the Pac had three teams in the CWS. Overall, over many years it looks like the Pac has averaged about 1 team in the CWS per year.

Re: The Baseball Regionals - BobK - 06-05-2017

Thanks Ct card    In the new Baseball America they list the top 200 roughly 6 rounds and no Gavin.  He's from St Francis of Mr View by the way.

The Pac 12 had 3 teams in the Softball World Series

Potential Stanford draft choices:
Beck 2nd round
Hock 3rd round
Brodey 6th round
Our top recruit mid 2nd round

More on recruits coming

Presumably that would be Michael Mercado, RHP out of San Diego?

Would be interested to hear more about our recruits. I would think it would be a tough recruiting year as right now it isn't known who will be the coach going forward. Presumably recruiting job #1 for the new guy will be to try to hold onto Mercado.

Re: The Baseball Regionals - BobK - 06-05-2017

That's a very high potentail pick for Mercado.  I'm worried.

Re: The Baseball Regionals - JJJ - 06-05-2017

I guess I can put this Rule of Tree article about 9 on this thread:

Quote:Saturday June 3rd, 2017 (6+3=9… Yes I am into weird coincidences), Stanford Cardinal baseball fell to the Cal State Fullerton Titans 4-2 which not only ended Stanford’s season but Coach Mark Marquess’ career on the Farm. While Stanford was a top-10 team, Fullerton owned Stanford this season winning their season series and would have swept if not for a blown 6-0 lead and swept Stanford in the Regional this past weekend.

Any other year, I would be furious at Stanford for blowing their best shot in almost a decade to not only return to Omaha but actually compete for a National Championship. For some reason this year, I am only saddened that Mark “Nine” Marquess will no longer be the head coach for Stanford baseball. I am not the first person to talk about what he brought to Stanford nor will I be the last but I wanted to dedicate this article to Coach Marquess with “NINE” reasons why I will always respect what Coach Marquess did at Stanford University.
