There has been a lot of talk on this board about how Chryst "stares down" his receiver. He certainly does. As has been pointed out on this board also, most college QBs do, at least to some extent. However, Chryst does not seem to decide "the receiver is open (enough), throw the ball" very easily. He wants to continue to stare and think about it. What he doesn't do is recognize "They got this covered, go somewhere else" and start staring somebody else down. So he either throws late, with all the attendant problems, or gets sacked. If you watch Costello, he tends to do the same thing. He stares at his primary target. However, Costello tends to decide to throw much quicker than Chryst does. The ball is out pretty much on time. When the primary receiver is covered, Costello tends to tuck and run. I can't recall too many cases where he came off to another receiver, although they may exist. The sample size on Costello is too small to know, I think. Also, in both games he played a lot of, the pass patterns seemed to be one or two receiver routes a lot of the time, so there wern't many other options. There were some "layer" patterns, where there were two receivers on the same side of the field at different depths, so you can stare at both of them at the same time :). Chryst for sure doesn't look for the second and third option much. Costello, the jury is still out.
