So we kept them below 50 in one half -- small victory, ::)
The second half question is how do we build and learn. Obviously, barring an absolute miracle x5, we have no shot at winning this game.
Instead of just trying to get through these last 20 minutes, what can we do to use it as a learning experience heading into the rest of the season?

Well, that may be our worst half ever. We are behind 49-14. 15 turnovers, 18% shooting. BUT we have 23 rebounds to UConns 22. I guess that is proof that rebounding is not everything. Alanna leads with 5 rebounds and McPhee has 4.
Nothing positive really in the first half except the rebounding has been competent. Jerome is 0/4. Johnson 0/3. Sniezek has not taken a shot even though she had several open looks. She has 1 assist and 2 turnovers. Williams got some time but is 0/4. Carrington seems to be trying hard, at least, and playing with purpose. She is 2/8, McPhee is 2/7.Â

Yes indeed. We need our players to get used to playing against that kind of defense since we will face a number of suffocating defenses down the road. As tough as this defense is, we need patience and we need to take open shots when we get them. There has been a tendency to force up bad shots and it shows in our 18%. We also should be doing better than 2/12 from three point range--many of those were open looks. Many of those shots were long--adrenaline and nervous energy.
We won't be beating UConn later this year. But a more experienced, less nervous team would be making more of those treys and committing fewer of those turnovers, and forcing up fewer awkward shots. That would make for a more respectable showing.
Meanwhile, this team is clearly coachable. I bet rebounding was a major point of emphasis after tOSU, and we are doing better on that count.

Uglier than I thought but not that unexpected. Just the wrong time to play them this year, with them spoiling for a fight after losing last season, and with a very experienced team vs our young players and a somewhat new offense. I don't even care if she makes them but when someone gets doubled inside and passes it to her for a wide open shot, Marta just has to shoot it against a team like UConn. Hard enough playing UConn, but harder still if players don't take the few open looks we do get.

A nice back door cut by Jerome and fed by Sniezek. Our players seems to be calming down. I imagine they will reduce the turnovers at least.
We continue to get open treys in transition and miss them.Â
Sniezek needs to get some credit for her rebounding. She does seem to be in the right place much of the time. Not bad for one of our shortest players.
And now Marta makes a trey! Bottle that and mass produce it please....
Commentators on the Stanford offense: more Princeton offense, elbow entry and less screening than in the past. This probably to make us less predictable in the absence of a dominate guard. Not sure I understand that...but that is the commentary.
It seems to me that most of our turnovers are occurring on perimeter passes. Our players and not properly estimating the length and quickness of the defenders. This has hurt us against Arizona State in the past, and will need to be corrected.Â

Tuned back in - I guess I'm a glutton for punishment...
It's like Marta heard us! More please! And yes, she should get a lot of credit for everything else. She is a great utility player but the lack of an offense just makes things really hard in terms of offensive spacing.
I'm really liking Carrington's gumption. She seems to have as much offensive instinct as the entire rest of the team combined when McPhee is off the floor. For some reason Smith has been somewhat hesitant on offense today.
Williams has also had some nice moves. They haven't all gone in, but she's definitely not afraid to try.

Carrington and Williams are doing themselves quite a lot of good. Carrington is 5/11 and has 14 points.
Williams has settled down and is running the offense. No assists and no turnovers so far, and only 2/7 but has show flashes of brilliance. One great layup in transition and a trey when left unguarded. That looks like what we need from a point guard.
I am wondering why we have not seen much from Dodson so far.

In her defense, Smith hasn't had a lot of good opportunities. No entry passes to post. - only 2 open looks for 3s
At least Geno inserted more of his bench and a walkon

We won the third quarter 19-18!
Alanna has gotten a couple of feeds down low and made her layups. Meanwhile she has snagged some rebounds in traffic at the other end. This looks a lot better than the first half.
McPhee keeps missing her treys, though. We need her to be effective from long range or they will know how to defend her too effectively in the paint.
Carrington is just looking terrific, both with creative moves under the basket as well as stroking it from three point range. Any player that can do that to UConn deserves to be a starter.

True, mbdude. And she's getting some better feeds now. Our rebounding has been really solid. They aren't getting a lot of second chance shots.
Early on, I think Dodson had a few quick fouls. I'm not sure why she's not seeing action in the 4th quarter.
I need to take back what I said last game about the sophomores not contributing. Carrington has been brobdingnagian for us today. If she can do this against UConn, we may have another offensive weapon quickly emerging.
