For swimming fans, the battle between Manuel and Comerford should be one of the highlights of the evening. The other is watching Lilly King of Indiana.  She won gold in Rio in the 100 breast event (meters, not yards which they swim in college). And the relay split that she swam last night in the 400 medley relay was the fastest 100 breast in history.

Eastin shattered (two seconds) the American record.  Ledecky not close behind for second.

I think it's safe to say that Eastin has timed her training absolutely perfectly. In the 400 IM, her best time this season was 3:57.32, and she just went 3:54.60.  In the 200 IM, her best time this season coming in was 1:53.24, and she won it with a 1:50.67. Wow.

Re: Women's Swimming at 2018 NCAA Championships - ColoradoTree - 03-16-2018

And Ally Howe gets us another win, this time in the 100 back! Hu finished in 5th.

To recap the other races:

* In the 100 fly, Hu finished 3rd and Engel finished 12th.

* In the 200 free, Manuel didn't quite have it, swimming 7 tenths slower than her fastest time of the year coming in, and she finished third. Drabot swam great (about .7 faster than her previous fastest time) to finish 4th!

* In the 100 breast, Zhao finished in 13th and Williams in 14th (Williams was a bit slower than expected; perhaps she's saving some energy for the 4x100 medley relay tonight, since she didn't make the A final?)

And let's not forget about freshman Brooke Forde, who took 4th in that crazy 400 IM and is having a heck of a meet.

Re: Women's Swimming at 2018 NCAA Championships - BostonCard - 03-16-2018

Stanford is at 414 points, 146 pts ahead of second place Cal.  2764 points have been awarded so far, which means Stanford has taken just a shade more than one out of every 7 points available.

Domination in the pool.

What are the chances we already have more points than whatever the 2nd place team will end up with?

Re: Women's Swimming at 2018 NCAA Championships - Hulk01 - 03-17-2018

It's virtually certain our women's already have more points (414) than the eventual runner-up,  Cal, will wind up with.  We have 414, heading to ~540.  Cal has 268, heading to ~365.

The only way we can lose that ~50 point difference is to get DQ in the relay and in an individual event event.

What the hell?!  It was very recently that being DQ'd in a relay cost us a national championship.  I'm knocking on wood until my fingers bleed to make up for your hubris.

Cheers,

Even if every one of our swimmers is DQ'd tonight, we should win.  Right now we have 414 points, cal has 268 points and Texas A&M has 186 points.

Per swimswam Cal has 4 swimmers in A finals and 2 swimmers in the B finals (although i only saw 3 swimmers in the A finals when looking at the prelim results).  Texas A&M has six swimmers in A finals and 1 swimmer in the B finals (but four of the A finals swimmers are all in the 200 breaststroke).  none of A&M,  Cal and Stanford has anyone in diving, and each has a team in the 400 free relay.  A&M also has 2 swimmers in the 1650 free, but they are far down the list.

By comparison, we have 4 swimmers in A finals (including the top 2 in the 200 fly) and 4 swimmers in B finals plus 3 potential scorers (including Ledecky) in the 1650 and the top prelim time in the 400 free relay.

Back of the envelope, I think the max Cal can get is 138 points (they win four A finals plus the relay for 120 points, plus get two 9th place finishes--but that's wrong since they don't have anyone in the 200 breast or 1650 free and there are only five individual events, so it's probably a max of 118 points), and A&M has too big a deficit.  We are probably looking at the second highest margin of victory in an NCAA swim meet, even outperforming the psyche sheet.  Pretty amazing team.

So the only possible scenario I see for us losing is a bunch of retroactive disqualifications, which won't happen.

we lose a ton this year (manuel, hu andhowe, among others), but bring in by far the number 1 recruiting class.  If ledecky and eastin return, we should be the favorites again.

Thanks.

Re: Women's Swimming at 2018 NCAA Championships - Hulk01 - 03-17-2018

Sorry I wasn't clear.

My comment was in response to "Do we already have more points than the runnerup will end up with?"  My answer was that even with two DQs, we should.  If everyone was DQ'd and we went scoreless tonight, we still would win by ~50.  We'd have the 414 we've earned already. while Cal would finish with -365.

Re: Women's Swimming at 2018 NCAA Championships - Treefence - 03-17-2018

The 1650 looked closer than it really was since Ledecky lapped everyone.

Re: Women's Swimming at 2018 NCAA Championships - Hulk01 - 03-17-2018

I think Ledecky held off to save herself the relay.  She'll have dozens of of chances to break her1650 record, but only one chance to help Stanford win the 400 relay this year.

Sure, it was a foregone conclusion but, still, CONGRATS to the NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!!!

Might this year’s Cardinal challenge for most championships in a year?

I was wondering the same thing, we have a shot in men’s swimming and diving, Baseball, and Tennis, women’s water Polo, and maybe Tennis?

Re: Women's Swimming at 2018 NCAA Championships - BostonCard - 03-17-2018

I think the record is six in 1997: men’s and women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving, if I recall.

Fantastic story here. It might get a little dusty while reading it - https://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/news/seeing-cardinal-red-stanford-overwhelms-ncaa-championships-once-again/

AWESOME!!  Congrats to the women's swimming and diving team. That's incredible the records they've set and the domination they are having.

Go Cardinal!!

I thought that two of the six were men's and women's cross-country.
