Fair critique. I should have caveated it with "since these sorts of records have been kept".

If SF can win four out of six this v. Washington and LA, they will have righted the ship - just in time for a softer part of the schedule.

OK, I just saw the video evidence of Mac Williamson's 464 clout to "Triples Alley" and must say that is the most impressive Home Run I've ever seen hit at AT&T Park. That outdoes anything Bonds ever hit, IMO. There may have been further hit balls, but an opposite field bomb to that part of the park, into the wind no less, is something special. Will be amazing what he does when at a band box like Cincinnati in the Summer. Of course, both his HRs this year for Giants have been opposite field shots. Will be interesting to see what happens when he pulls one.

That home run was extraordinary.  I don't recall Bonds hitting too many off field, but if you think about it...464 feet, opposite field, into the wind. And the Giants struck out 17 times that day, most since Koufax punched out 18 Giants on August 31, 1959. Williamson was the only Giant who didn't strike out.  Wow.  Just...wow.

Let's also point out that Chris Stratton had a pretty good 6 2/3 giving up 2 ERs with seven total baserunners.  Dyson got his batter out and Tony Watson and Hunter Strickland each had a good inning, although every time I see Strickland on the mound, I find an excuse to do something other than watch him pitch.  Although if he had pitched against Harper, I would have watched it.   :D

And the Giants stats are getting incrementally better.  Here are their MLB rankings: #19 in BA at .234, #13 in stolen bases #15 in HRs with 23 but #26 in runs scored.  For fielding, #16 in fielding percentage, #5 in double plays.  Giants Team pitching is shining with a 3.29 ERA (#6) and a 1.19 WHIP (#8).  We're 10-12 and Cueto has the lowest ERA in the majors and Samardzija pitched well in his first stint back, and we get Bumgarner back in six weeks (or so).

I was at the game in the LA Coliseum. One of the best games ever. Over 90,000 in attendance in the heat of a Giants-Dodgers-Braves pennant race. The plate was near the tunnel with the left field pole only 250 feet from home. A very tall wire fence extended to left center with right field miles away towards the peristyle entrance. McCovey took Koufax deep with a 400 foot line drive that might have been the hardest ball ever hit. This was Sandy before he “got it” struggling every other game. With all the strikeouts (he tied Feller’s record that night) the Giants took the field tied in the bottom of the ninth. Dodger outfielder Wally Moon had changed his approach and used an inside out swing (left handed hitter) to golf balls just over the LF fence. The game ended with one of his “Moonshots” possibly off Stu Miller as I can”t remember the pitcher at the time. Duke Snider hated the park and on opening day hurt his arm after a bet that he could toss a ball over the rim from the field.

RE: Giants now worse than 2017? - qwerty49 - 04-24-2018

I remember seeing one of those Coliseum games on TV. Mays made two full-out running catches in the alleys, one deep in right center and the other near the fence in left center. Then he ripped an extra-base hit up one of the alleys.  Pretty sure that was the game where the camera showed Willie standing on 2nd or 3rd and one of announcers said, “the only man who could have caught that ball, just hit it.”

Frank Howard vs Stu Miller was always a fun matchup to watch back then. There may have been cars on the LA freeway traveling faster than Miller’s pitches.

Well...  there is your 4 out of 6.  Of course, I forgot about the make up game so there is one more to play in the games v. Washington/LA.  Have a smoke, Phogge!

RE: Giants now worse than 2017? - Mick - 04-29-2018

With yesterday's split, the Giants are now one-half game ahead of the Dodgers and 1.5 behind the Rockies. Here's how I see it playing out:

Best case: Bumgarner comes back whole. Crawford, McCutchen, Jackson and Longoria return to their numbers of last year. Blanco, Tomlinson and Gregor continue to have solid backup numbers (which they currently have). Williamson returns, plays a full season and hits thirty homers. Melancon comes back, Will Smith comes back. Sandoval has 15 homers and celebrates with a lean tenderloin steak. Posey doesn't get injured and hits .300. We get one of the two wild card spots, and on to the world series. Stanford's Austin Slater has a walk-off HR in all three game 7's.

Worst case: Craw, Cutch, Jackson and Longo stick around .200 because they got old fast. Sandoval eats The Tenderloin. Pitchers continue to get injured. Pitchers figure out Williamson. 61 wins, 101 losses.

OBTW: George Kontos, who I always liked, just got his second win of the season, evening his record at 2-2. He has the third lowest ERA on the Pirates at 3.75.

Kontos had to go - he was one of the primary reasons for the issues in the clubhouse last season.  For whatever reason, he did not get along with his teammates.

The big concern now is Panik’s thumb.  If it requires surgery, he will be out about 10 weeks.

RE: Giants now worse than 2017? - lex24 - 04-29-2018

Heading to AT&T. First game of the year. Bummed that Mac is out. Hopefully just for a week. He’s had injury problems. But man, he could have broke his neck. Panik injury is a bummer. Possible surgery. Two months. Tomlinson is a guy I like. But he’s not an everyday player. Hansen is intriguing. Still young. One time a fairly big prospect. Killed the ball in Sacto. Hit a bomb his first time up with the Giants. I think his glove is suspect. And that is something the Giants won’t tolerate. They have to play good defense to win.

This team does show more life than the moribund squad they put on the field last year. Much better 1-8 lineup. I’m not the least bit worried about McCutheon. He is a slow starter historically. And he still has a quick bat. Longoria has been hammering the ball. He’s been AT&T’d a couple times on this homestand.

I am concerned about Buster. He simply is not driving the ball. Last two years he dropped off precipitously after the break power wise. I know he was hurt at least one of those years. He’s got a thumb issue and has missed a game with a stiff back. Hundley right now is hitting the ball harder. I’m hoping this is just a slow start. But I’m concerned.

Suarez comes up Tuesday. I’m hoping he throws well. And replaces Holland. Who has shown nothing.

All in all, not a bad April. They are very watchable. This is not a team that will make the playoffs. The division is too tough. 19 vs Dodgers Colorado and Snakes is tough. Arizona may have best rotation in the league. Dodgers will get it going eventually.

Right now most disappointing team in baseball is the Nats. 11-16. Good. Serves them right for firing Dusty.

Got it.  Who besides Kontos was in the poisonous character club?  Romo?  Melancon?  Pagan and Casilla were gone last year, so it wasn't them.  Matt Moore?

Romo wasn’t with the Giants last year

Read that Melancon has gone to the 60-day DL... Part of the clubhouse problem may be who’s missing. I had the opportunity to hear Jeremy Affeldt speak at a Giants’ community event last year; while he may have trouble with kitchen knives, he has a way with words. Really empathetic, too. Could easily see how he might’ve been a positive influence on teammates.

Hey Bob, quick change of pace...

Yesterday, Pablo Sandoval became the second player in major league history to hit three HRs in a World Series game and pitch a minimum of one inning in a big league game.  The first - Babe Ruth.

Don’t know...  While not widely written about, there were some significant issues last year.  They started leaking out after the season.  The only name I saw mentioned was Kontos.  However, I’m sure there were others.

Bob's point was that Gregor = Blanco.
