RE: Wilcox to $C? - Redrum - 11-19-2018

Hmmm.  Just for fun, let's look at it a different way.  Imagine a situation where David Shaw leaves to, say, follow his bliss.  Would you take a run at Wilcox or think Wilcox would be a good gamble as a Stanford coach?  If not, then who? (Remember, this is how athletic directors are supposed to think: What IF...who else should they keep their eye on?)  Who else would you keep your eye on?

RE: Wilcox to $C? - Phogge - 11-19-2018

Heck no. I'd hire Leach just for his press conferences. it is a bit too serious in the coaching rooms at Stanford. And I have the perfect long snapper coach in mind.

Isn't he out of eligibility, or did you want him as defensive coordinator?

I agree with you that a minor miracle has occurred....

Well, there is a miracle in just how the cal team has changed. It's become bizarro-cal.

In Dykes last year cal led the conference in offense at 513 yds/gm and were 10th nationally. But they were also 10th in the Pac in defense at 518 yds/gm, 125th nationally (of 128).

Right now, cal is 12th in the conference in offense at 364 yds/gm, 104th nationally. But they are also 3rd in the Pac in defense at 319 yds/gm, 18th nationally.

Cal has become ... 2014 Stanford?

Wilcox had the same record in his first year that Dykes had in his last year, 5-7.  Also just realized that Tedford went to Bowl Games in seven straight years with a 5-2 record, eight bowl games in 11 years total.  I don't think they should have gotten rid of him.

Plus my deceased cousin started on the Muncie team so I don't have the blind hatred of some around here.

I think it's more schtick than blind hatred. Beat Cal, dirty golden bear, axe in the neck, etc. All in good fun, underneath.

It's always seemed to me as if the blind hatred mostly was coming in the other direction. What I really hate is when they bring out the 1982 video every blessed year.

- I really like to beat USC

- I really dislike losing to Cal

LOL. Haven't you figured it out by now?  BC IS Pop Warner.

I was responding to BC, not accusing him. Referring to an ex Stanford player who has the role of S*** disturber on TOS.

And BC is more Amos Alonzo Stagg than Pop.

One of my favorite stories: When Stagg turned 100 he was asked how long he expected to live and said "forever." When asked how he thought he'd do that, he said, "Statistically, very few people die after the age of 100."

I always liked the George Burns quote "I don't plan on dying. It's been done."

RE: Wilcox to $C? - CompSci87 - 11-25-2018

The dreaded vote of confidence, or a real commitment for more than just next season?

RE: Wilcox to $C? - 2006alum - 11-25-2018

I'll say this: I'm impressed with Swann's thoughtful, measured, and yet blunt letter. He takes partial responsibility for the season, and doesn't make excuses, but also pushes back against the mob mentality of the peanut gallery. His letter also gives clear reasons for the decision, metrics for success, and areas to focus on, so there's something to measure against next season. That was what always bothered me with, for example, our over-long retention of Johnny Dawkins in MBB. Muir never really gave explicit reasons for doing so, so season after season would end in what I think everyone (including Muir) agreed was disappointment, but with no clear plan going forward, and no sense of what Dawkins needed to accomplish in order to remain. Assistant coaches remained, general tactics and strategies didn't develop, recruiting got no better, and there was no sense that anyone had a new plan going forward.
