In addition to being comically bad football, the trophy celebration for the Cheez-It Bowl is beyond absurd. The TCU players are celebrating by tossing boxes of Cheez-It's in the air and they handed Gary Patterson a trophy full of Cheez-It's. Oh yeah, and it's all taking place in an indoor baseball stadium. If the Rose Bowl is the most prestigious bowl game in terms of tradition, class and significance, the Cheez-It Bowl is its antithesis. Call me pretentious but I'm glad that Stanford had nothing to do with this event.

Couldn't disagree more. It was a rare irrelvant bowl that embraced the absurdity of its existence. It actually looked fun (of course, I thought the absurdity of the game was fun too, and the fact the Cheez-It Bowl social media team embraced that too). 90% (maybe 80%) of bowl games are meaningless and uninteresting with no tradition. The only purpose they can possibly serve is to be fun for the the fans and players, and this bowl seemed to get that. I loved that the trophy was a bowl filled with Cheez-Its like the Orange Bowl. This is almost to the level of the Bahamas bowl (

BTW, it's a little misleading to say that playing in an El Paso bowl game gives Stanford a foot in the Texas recruiting door. El Paso is pretty much halfway to Los Angeles for some of Texas (~12 hr drive); El Paso is about an 11 hr drive from Houston and a 9.3 hr drive from Dallas.
Carpool, anyone? :p

We added an El Paso office in the last twelve months, and one of the first things that the managing partner told me was "You have to understand that this is
not a Texas office. It's miles from anywhere."

Let me see......
Sun Bowl 3 times in a decade is too much, but another trip to the Rose Bowl (making it 4 trips in 6 years) would have been ok. Is that what I am reading? 10 years ago, who would have dared to even think Stanford would participate in 10 straight bowl games.
I'm hoping the Sun Bowl does not bookend the run.

Speaking for myself, given how easy it is to get into a bowl game these days, I don't consider doing it a particularly noteworthy achievement.

Most fans of college football watch games that either 1)feature two teams that usually play really good football, or 2)teams for which they have a particular affection. Back "in the day", you would watch the Rose Bowl because the teams would generally be pretty good, even if you had no dog in the fight.
The problem with the current bowl situation is that 6-6 teams aren't going to play good football. Often 8-4 teams don't play good football. 10-2 teams usually do. For that reason, many of the games will be clunkers. Fewer and fewer people will actually watch. Unfortunately, in our current advertising driven world, it may take a long time (if ever?) for companies to realize these games aren't helping them sell product. There are plenty of bowl chairmen who spent 365 days a year ensuring some sucker does believe it sells product. Until that changes, we will have the current excess of bad football.

Those of us who witnessed seven bowl-less seasons between the ill-fated Seattle bowl and the first sun bowl, when we were just thrilled beyond measure to become bowl eligible, would disagree.
I remember when in the midst of the Montgomery era, people used to discount his accomplishments by grumbling about how easy it was to make the tourney and complain about the number of second round exits.

Well, speaking (I hope) for those of us who can't make it to see games at Stanford in person, this bowl game snobbery has its limits. Television coverage for Stanford has its market-dictated limits, but back in flyover country ANY broadcast/cable game is more than welcome. From where I sit most of the time, your pickiness is misplaced. Each game I get to see is a gift, some a better gift than others but still more engaging than anything the SEC has going. And, no, my SEC-besotted in-laws don't even bother to engage with that obviously loony viewpoint.

So what you're saying is we should be very happy in years we go 6-6 and end up in the Insignificant Bowl.
I certainly hope we are wise enough not to hire any Buddy's or Wlat's again, but I guess you never know.
Think we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

Nope. But right now, our horrible, frustrating down years are the ones where we only win 8 games. That doesn't mean I am satisfied but it also doesn't mean that we are never going to have Rose Bowl level seasons again. I am more than satisfied to have a program that consistently wins 8 games and has many years where we win more. The idea that we can't regress to the bad old days is beyond foolish so I try to appreciate every season of this era to the fullest. I will be in El Paso cheering the team on.
Cheers,

exactly, as an undergrad (1979-82) I thought if get to the Rose Bowl even once that would be fantastic, we did in 2000, at that time I thought well that's my one Rose Bowl trip ever. We've been three more times since then with with an Orange Bowl and a Fiesta Bowl thrown in as a bonus. Like most of you I recall the really bad teams (1-10 in 1983 and 1-11 in 2006) which were the real dark times while I have been a fan, I do hope we are never that bad again!!!!

No, I did not write that we should be happy to go six and six and end up in an insignificant bowl. What I wrote is that going to even an insignificant bowl every year for the last ten is a rather more significant achievement than you give the team credit for, and we are just one or two bad hires away from not just missing out on a bowl, but from a prolonged and painful slump that at one point saw us go 1-11. I mean, sure most teams in power five conferences will make a bowl game. But over time eventually everyone stumbles, so while going to a non top tier bowl game may not seem like much of an accomplishment, not going to one will eventually happen, at which point we will be thankful for the golden years of Stanford football, when a “bad year” meant we were “stuck” going to the Sun Bowl as the fourth best team in the conference.
Quick, name all the pac-12 teams who have a bowl streak as long or longer than ours. Short list, because all eleven other PAC-12 teams have missed out on a bowl game in the ten years we’ve been going. If making a bowl is so easy, surely other teams, who did not have to contend with a Buddy or Wlat, have gone, right? Exactly ten teams in all of college football have been going to bowl games as long as Stanford, most in conferences that play only 8 conference games (the OMG SEC has four such teams). My point is that going to a bowl game year in and year out is an accomplishment, and going to the Sun Bowl is something that at least seven other teams in the conference envy. And even Cal’s Cheez-It’s appearance is better than teams like UCLA, USC, Arizona, not to mention Oregon state and Colorado wish they could be doing instead of staying home for the holidays.

Just about everything's been said on this thread, but I'll add my two cents that expectations, like karma, are a b*tch. After reading glowing reports about our highly rated teams in MSOC, WSOC, MWP and WVB, I was wildly hoping this would be the year we got some real separation from UCLA in the race for all-time NCAA team championships. But we "only" got one of those four.
I suppose the football analogy is to get your hopes up after starting 4-0, then die the death of a thousand cuts as we pretty clearly regress to the mean after that.
And the context varies with how long you've been watching this stuff. Heck, before Plunkett came we were pretty mediocre for a long time. And there was a vast dry spell where we couldn't even make a bowl with Elway at QB. Between Wiggin and Willingham there wasn't a lot to write home about. And of course Buddy and Wlat, in juxtaposition to Harbs, were as painful as it gets. If you just started watching Stanford in the last 10-12 years you might be tempted to diss an 8-4 season. If you have a longer fan memory, maybe not.
Sure, there's a lot of coulda-woulda-shoulda this year. We coulda won a couple of games we lost, and we coulda lost one game that we won. We woulda done better if Bryce had been healthy. Our OL shoulda been way better, but for whatever reason it wasn't.
Here's a thought -- how much angst do we have to absorb? If we were in the Rose Bowl, with all those starters out for one reason or another, getting pounded by Ohio State, would everyone still feel better?

Let's put it another way, for noteworthy achievements. In the 10 straight years Stanford has been to a bowl, the team has won 77% of its games, INCLUDING the 5-4 bowl record with SoS that is borderline ridiculous every stinking year. Stanford has NEVER had a nine year run like this. Closest was Pop Warner, who won 80% of his games against not-spectacular opponents and was 1-1-1 in Rose Bowls.

I don't think anyone disputes the epic experience that we Stanford fans have had over the last seven years. Quoting the truly amazing statistics that the team accumulated over that period does absolutely nothing to assess whether the momentum has been leaking out of the engine.
Having experienced a period of euphoria, anxiety arises about the signs the period might be drawing to a close. All we need to do is rationalize 8-5 w/ discussions of the impact of injuries and sophisticated statistics that put our frustrations at ease. In the meantime, the TWU membership roll is empty. There really is no Intellectual Brutality. We do not Party in the Backfield with regularity.

Yeah, I sure hope we aren't going to rationalize a 6-6 year by saying it continues our string of bowl games.
