Stanford Women’s Tennis
UPDATE: Due to inclement weather in the Seattle area, today's match has been moved up to 2 p.m

Dumb question, but isn’t this supposed to be an indoor tennis tournament?

BC

It is. Seattle all but shut down due to a snowstorm on Saturday. Seattle as a city isn’t extremely prepared for snow, let alone the icy conditions that plagued the hills of the city. Hence, UDubs campus was closed, along with most of the city.

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - bbm233 - 02-11-2019

There is snowboarding on the hills of Seattle. Winter weather advisory - fourth shot of snow due to arrive in a couple hours. Many businesses are telling employees to work remotely (including mine). Schools are closed.

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - cardfan77 - 02-11-2019

It’s the condition outside of tennis courts.  The whole city has been on a halt since February 1.  Road conditions are dangerous.  Lots of icy hills. All schools are closed.  A UW student died on Wednesday from slipping and Wednesday was one of the nicer days.  Flights are being routed to PDX.   The snow has crippled the city as the city is not equipped to deal with this much snow.

spot-on: her opponent was a 6'3" freshman from Serbia. The Texas coach joked afterward that she beat a Stanford player who loses about once a decade.

If Granic plays against us at Taube, that might otherwise bump the 6'3" player off the lineup, but I'm guessing the Texas coach will figure his chances for a win would be better matching the Serbian up against Higuchi again.

Right? If Granic is healthy, I think he'd want her playing against Lampl and pushing other folks down, but it might be a good weekend for someone else to have a "minor ankle injury" that could use a day or two to get better and keep those favorable matchups at 5 and 6. If I'm the Texas head coach, I'd much rather go that route than drop Spasojevic out of the lineup. That sort of gamesmanship is poor form, of course, but stuff that minor doesn't bother me.

So, due to all the weather, the "three match guarantee" is out the window, and the tournament has ended after two matches for everyone except those in the semifinals. A real bummer for some of those teams, as one more ranked win might be the difference at the end of the year between sneaking into the 7th or 8th seed and getting a home date through the super regionals, or more likely, getting to #15 or #16 and hosting a regional.

After Stanford and Georgia advanced, here's how the rest of the matches went yesterday:

Main Draw:

(3) Duke d. (6) Pepperdine 4-1 (#11 Mateas of Duke fell to Pepperdine's Lahey (the preseason #4 who is now out of the rankings due to a light fall schedule))
(2) UNC d. (7) UCLA 4-1 (doubles point was decided in UNC's favor by a tiebreaker at #2; from UCLA's perspective, Miller had a nice, tough win at #5, Hart was a game away from a win at #1, and Altick was into a third set at #4, but UNC has a brutal combination of quality depth and top-line players)

Consolation:

#16 Ohio State d. #10 Syracuse 4-2
#15 South Carolina d. #9 Oklahoma State 4-1
#12 Northwestern d. #18 LSU 4-3
Washington d. #14 N.C. State 4-3

That's a really nice win for UW. This tournament has had its issues with weather and cancellations, but UW came out of it with a ranked win and a loss to a top 5 team, so that's a nice shot in the arm for the Huskies' ranking. That'll be big come NCAA selection time.

I wonder if this will cause the ITA to hold Indoor Nationals in even colder, snowier parts of the country more often in the future. The University of Wisconsin has done a good job hosting in the past, and the University of Minnesota has ten indoor courts (with other high-quality facilities in the Twin Cities that could accommodate other matches).  Nothing against Seattle or the University of Washington--by all accounts, UW does a great job with events like these. But when weather like this is so rare, it doesn't make a ton of sense to have a massive fleet of snowplows on hand, so I get why Seattle tends not to do well with snow. In Minneapolis and Madison, by contrast, you don't have the same issues with hills, and they've developed good mechanisms for dealing with tons of snow on roads or on sidewalks out of necessity. If the goal is to spread the bigger tournaments around the country, then you might as well go someplace where there's a robust infrastructure in place to deal with it.

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - ColoradoTree - 02-11-2019

Quick Georgia preview:

It's a rematch of last year's NCAA quarterfinal, when Stanford won 4-0 behind a quick doubles point (thanks to Lampl/Yee at #2 and Lord/Shin at #3) and singles wins from Lord (6-1, 6-2 over Kennedy Shaffer), Lampl (6-4, 6-2 over Marta Gonzalez), and Arbuthnott (6-4, 6-2 over Mariana Gould).  When the match was abandoned, Gordon had won the first set over Jokic and was on serve at 3-4 in the second, Shin was just starting her third set, and Higuchi had bounced back from losing a first-set tiebreaker to go up a break in the second.

From that team, we've lost nobody, while Georgia lost their #2 and #4, and their #6 has been supplanted by another player, so the only rematches will be Gordon-Jokic at #1 and Shin-Christofi at #5. Georgia is a very young team, with freshmen at #3 and #6, sophomores at #1 and #4, and juniors at #2 and #5. But youth aside, they just knocked off Vanderbilt after losing the doubles point, so this might be a more dangerous Georgia team than last year.

Doubles:

1. #11 Lampl/Yee (3-0 in duals) vs. Vivian Wolff/Lourdes Carle (1-3 in duals)
2. #13 Arbuthnott/Gordon (1-0) vs. Morgan Coppoc/Eleni Christofi (3-1)
3. #31 Lord/Madurawe (4-0) vs. Katarina Jokic/Meg Kowalski (2-1)

Singles:

1. #23 Gordon (3-0) vs. #2 Katarina Jokic (4-1)
2. #46 Lord (3-1) vs. #10 Marta Gonzalez (3-2)
3. #57 Lampl (4-0) vs. #102 Lourdes Carle (4-1)
4. #14 Arbuthnott (5-0) vs. #58 Vivian Wolff (4-1)
5. #37 Shin (3-1) vs. Eleni Christofi (4-1)
6.  #44 Higuchi (1-1) vs. #84 Meg Kowalski (5-0)

Analysis

Don't let the lack of ranked teams fool you--Georgia plays good doubles, and all three matches against Vanderbilt were close before the Commodores took that point. Georgia then got singles wins at #1 (Jokic beat Fernanda Contreras 4-6, 6-1, 6-2), #3 (another three-setter), #5 (7-5 in the third set, from 1-5 down), and #6 (another three-setter). A great comeback win, and one that should make the Bulldogs feel pretty confident today. Like us, they fight.

Gordon has been playing some great tennis, but you don't want to count on a win at #1 against a great player like Jokic. At #6, Kowalski is 5'4", so hopefully Higuchi can handle her, but Kowalski also hasn't lost a dual match yet, so we'll see shortly.

FYI, Lampl/Yee are on Court 1, Arbuthnott/Gordon are on Court 3, and Lord/Madurawe are on Court 5. It's early, but here we are:

1. Leading 2-1 (up a break)
2. Leading 2-1 (up a break)
3. Trailing 1-2 (on serve)

Getting the doubles point would do a great deal for my nerves; all four remaining teams are very good and very deep, so every point counts.

Doubles:

1. Leading 5-2 (up a double break and cruising)
2. Trailing 3-4 (on serve; but with four straight breaks of serve before that last hold from Georgia, that doesn't mean much)
3. Trailing 3-4 (on serve; lost deuce point on Georgia's serve, then an easy Lord hold, and then another lost deuce point on Georgia's serve--frustrating)

Doubles:

1. Lampl/Yee won 6-3 (had a match point, gave one of those breaks back, but broke back to take the match)
2. Trailing 4-5 (on serve; four straight breaks of serve before three straight holds; Gordon will serve to stay in it, as a break will give Georgia the doubles point)
3. Lord/Madurawe lost 6-4. Georgia served for it up 5-3, we broke at love to get it back on serve, and Lord was serving up 40-0 but lost four straight points, including a double fault on deuce/match point. Just brutal.

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - BostonCard - 02-11-2019

Thanks all; I didn't realize the storm was bringing in snow.  And I figured Washington ought to be as prepared as any city in the country for rain.

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - ColoradoTree - 02-11-2019

Gordon holds for 5-5, and then we break to go up 6-5! Arbuthnott will serve for that match, and the doubles point, coming up next.

Just a terrific point to go up 15-0, and a great serve sets up a weak return and a Gordon smash for 30-0. Arbuthnott sends a backhand just wide for 30-15. A quick point and it's 40-15, and after a good rally, Georgia sends it to Gordon's backhand at the net; she stabs at it, it hits the net cord, and falls on the Georgia side for the win!

Doubles point to Stanford. Whew. Let's go get three more!

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - cardfan77 - 02-11-2019

Seems like courts 4, 5 and 6 are having the same struggle as yesterday especially Higuchi.  Hopefully one of them can turn their game around for the better.

On court 3, no one can win a point on their serve.

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - Lorcan - 02-11-2019

Melissa Lord may be the only one to win her first set at this juncture. Gordon just saved 3 break points, only to be broken on the deciding point. Ouch.

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - ColoradoTree - 02-11-2019

Stanford 1, Georgia 0

Georgia getting what it needs from singles so far, having already booked two first sets and up a break in two more, and Stanford up a break in two matches (I think)....

1. Gordon trails 2-4 (down a break)
2. Lord leads 5-3 (up a break)
3. Lampl trails 3-4 (down a break)
4. Arbuthnott trails 2-6, 0-1 (she sometimes starts slowly in singles before roaring to life; I'm not panicking yet; down a break in second)
5. I think there's a score error here. It shows as Shin trailing 3-2, but I just watched Shin win the game that's credited to her opponent and then lose a game that's credited to her, so I think it's actually Shin leading 3-2, up a break.
6. Higuchi trails 1-6, 0-1 (on serve in second)

FYI, the court numbers match up with the lineup positions now....

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - Lorcan - 02-11-2019

Well, I jinxed Melissa and I shall go and find some form of penance. It's going to take a tough fight to get back in this one.

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - ColoradoTree - 02-11-2019

Stanford 1, Georgia 1

1. Gordon leads 6-4, 0-1 (big few games from Michaela to end that first set)
2. Lord trails 5-7, 1-1 (man, that first set went haywire at the end)
3. Lampl trails 3-6, 3-1 (up a break in second, and she's playing much better)
4. Arbuthnott trails 2-6, 2-5
5. They're changing the scoring here, but I have no idea if it's right yet. It feels like they corrected the score at 4-3 to give Shin the lead, but then went back to counting Shin points for Christofi and vice versa. I am confused. It shows as a 6-3 Shin first-set win, but I have no idea.
6. Higuchi lost 1-6, 1-6. Goodness gracious. You almost have to wonder whether she's injured.

Georgia needs 4 wins, and they got 4 first sets, so we'll need to bag a three-setter or two today.

Order: 6

Georgia 2, Stanford 1

1. Gordon leads 6-4, 0-3 (down one break)
2. Lord trails 5-7, 2-3 (Melissa is getting so many break points but just can't convert them; I'm worried she's in her own head now)
3. Lampl trails 3-6, 4-2  (up a break in second, and she's playing much better)
4. Arbuthnott lost 2-6, 2-6

Order: 6, 4

We're not going to win too many tough matches this year if we can't get wins out of #4 and #6....

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - cardfan77 - 02-11-2019

Not looking good for Stanford.  Georgia is about to go up 3-1.  Lord is about to lose her match

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - ColoradoTree - 02-11-2019

Georgia 2, Stanford 1

Remaining matches (we need 3):

1. Gordon leads 6-4, 1-4 (got one break back, at least)
2. Lord trails 5-7, 2-5 (she's on tilt right now, and Gonzalez is serving for it now)
3. Lampl tied 3-6, 5-3 (had set points on her serve, but got broken)
5. ?????

Order: 6, 4

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - cardfan77 - 02-11-2019

Anyone knows what going on Court 5?  Score?

(02-11-2019, 01:26 PM)cardfan77 Wrote:  Anyone knows what going on Court 5?  Score?

Ahh.. Score finally updated.  We need courts 1, 3 and 5 to all win

Both Courts 1 and 3 are starting the 3rd set.   Shin is up a set and up 4-2 in the 2nd set.  I think Lampl Shin will win their match.  It will come down to court 1.  Gordon needs to play flawlessly to win her match.

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - ColoradoTree - 02-11-2019

Georgia 3, Stanford 2

Lord went from in control of her first set to grasping for answers. She wasn't sharp today, losing 5-7, 2-6. And Shin (I think?) just won 6-3, 6-2, in a really nice turnaround from yesterday.

Remaining matches (we need all of them):

1. Gordon tied 6-4, 1-6, 0-0
3. Lampl tied 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (had set points on her serve, but got broken before breaking for the set; held to open the third)

Order: 6, 4, 2, 5

No matter how this one turns out, I'll be somewhat disheartened. This is not how Melissa Lord is supposed to play. This is not how Emily Arbuthnott is supposed to play. This is not how Emma Higuchi is supposed to play. Lampl might well pull out her third set (I certainly wouldn't bet against her), and Shin maybe just won? If Gordon beats Jokic, it would be a tremendous win that would make me feel really good about her prospects this year, but this is a concerning team result, especially on the heels of Texas yesterday. When you play matches against teams like this, with great players at the top, our depth has to come through. And it didn't today. And that's concerning.

Georgia 3, Stanford 2

Remaining matches (we need both):

1. Gordon leads 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (really nice hold to open the third)
3. Lampl leads 3-6, 6-3, 3-0 (had set points on her serve, but got broken before breaking for the set; held to open the third)

Order: 6, 4, 2, 5

Let's hope Lampl keeps it going and helps Michaela feed off that energy!

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - oldalum - 02-11-2019

the wrong scoring is more than annoying.
They are showing 3-3 and Gordon's match completed, but they're playing a third set so it must be 2-3.
Lampl is up a break early in the third set (maybe)

Everything about this tournament is annoying.  With the delays, poor video quality and untrustworthy scores update.  I was hoping to see the team play a couple of times this weekend but mother nature had a different plan...

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - oldalum - 02-11-2019

Lampl up 2 breaks, 4-0
Gordon was just broken at love for 1-2
Georgia team cheering very loudly

RE: Women's Tennis: Indoor Nationals - ColoradoTree - 02-11-2019

Georgia 3, Stanford 2

1. Gordon trails 6-4, 1-6, 1-2
3. Lampl leads 3-6, 6-3, 5-0

Never bet against Caroline Lampl!  Also, that was a terrific point just now for Jokic to get to 15-30. Those two are good. A couple of break points for Gordon that she can't convert, and it's deuce point....

Order: 6, 4, 2, 5

Let's hope Lampl keeps it going and helps Michaela feed off that energy!

Stanford 3, Georgia 3

Lampl finishes off her win 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 just as Jokic wins deuce point to consolidate that break of Gordon and go up 3-1. A couple of tight line calls from Jokic in that set, but I can't say they were bad line calls.

1. Gordon trails 6-4, 1-6, 1-3

Stanford 3, Georgia 3

1. Gordon trails 6-4, 1-6, 2-3

Gordon held at love to keep her close! Come on!
