RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Missouri State Saturday 3:30 ESPN2 - CompSci87 - 03-30-2019

All right now! No style points, but it's a win.

Obviously our shooters have to relax and get their confidence back. I thought we were playing fine on offense early and getting decent looks, but everything degenerated when it started to seem like hitting a 3-pointer was impossible.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Missouri State Saturday 3:30 ESPN2 - M T - 03-30-2019

I blame it on practicing free throws!
We hit 42% FT against BYU, so they probably were told to practice them.
We hit 75% FT against MOST,  which shows Stanford must have been practicing them.

At 10.3% 3PT, we couldn't have been practicing those.

Do you have a better explanation for this game?

I'm glad they got this one out of their system. They will play better in the next game.

Not really sure how we won that game.  I don't know what was more maddening, all the missed 3's or all the missed layups.  Williams goes 3-17 including 0-11 from three.  Carrington 2-11.  Hull 2-10.  Game ball goes to Wilson who played with poise on a night when everyone else was playing so tight and hoping that someone else would make a shot.

If someone had told me before the game that Smith, Carrington and Williams would come to make 8 shots, I'd have put serious money on us losing. Not sure how we did it, but we advanced. Was Tara looking ahead and wanting to deprive Muffet of any kind of offense to scout against? Sheesh. If they don't pick things up on Monday it's going to be brutal.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Missouri State Saturday 3:30 ESPN2 - Viking_Guy - 03-30-2019

Player of the game Anna Wilson.

Second would be Shannon Coffee, to me.

The best players at first unable and then unwilling to shoot.  Dodson missing an uncontested layup, then blowing another uncontested chance because she hesitated to take it. I was praying that Tara would pull Alanna back out at the end of the game, because her standing at the elbow unwilling to even look at the hoop was clogging up any chance for the offense.

And why do we still decide we can't attack the FT line against a 2-3 zone?

My other big gripe - very little willingness to attack the hoop.  The starters shot 0-17 from 3 pt range, and yet only Carrington and to a lesser extent Wilson and an occasional Williams drive.  Just ugly.

If they play anything like this, they could very well give the Oregon game a run for its money in humiliating losses this season.

A lot of the three's weren't bad shots.  None were really contested.  Some were wide wide open.  We just couldn't hit any and then it got in everyone's head.

RE: WBB: Stanford 55 Missouri State 46 - Viking_Guy - 03-30-2019

BC--

That was the frustrating part.  There were some awful takes - Williams launching 25-footers with time on the clock, one Hull (or maybe Williams) upfaking in the corner, then sliding 5-6 feet around the arc and heaving one up while fading to her left).  But a lot of them were WIDE open.

I eventually had to watch the game with the sound off, because I couldn't take the "analysts" patter.  I can't think of one really good observation from them the entire game.

Alanna's fourth foul?  Running straight through a screen JUST after you reenter the game in foul trouble late in the third quarter?  Luckily, the team seemed to play more openly with her on the bench - maybe they stopped looking for her to bail them out of bad offense.

The other thing to remember is the defense, even with the Bears getting a lot of the benefit of the doubt from the refs. (Was that one of our triumvarate of favorites, Michael? - the guy with the brush cut?) That was a very good game on defense, even with the fouls.

Mostly, it was frustrating to watch Stanford utterly fail to score inside against a much smaller team.  The number of blocks and missed bunnies, on breakaways, on putback attempts, really showed a big weakness in being able to finish strong.  Notre Dame will be that intense times about 3 defensively inside.

Write up is done at the top.  Not that there is a lot of deep analysis needed here.

We have a little more than one day to get ready for the best offensive team in decades.  Shooting 50% of our treys might not be enough, let alone 10%.

VG and I were both thinking the same thing--if we play like this against Notre Dame it could exceed the margin of the Oregon loss.

RE: WBB: Stanford 55 Missouri State 46 - TheFarm07 - 03-30-2019

I was planning on following up my post from last night regarding the poor 3-pt shooting from Pac-12 teams with a counterpoint showing the winning teams these last two days do not depend on 3-pt shooting as much (ex: Baylor only attempted four 3-pt shots all game long), but this game we were awful from everywhere on the court.

My sliver of hope is that we played this way because we were expected to win against Missouri State. Against Notre Dame, they are the heavy favorites, especially after our performance this afternoon. Maybe...we'll play looser because we are not expected to win...but I am not holding my breath.

I think we need a little more brashness and confidence in ourselves. We have a collection of All-Americans and all of these players have tasted great success in their careers, both on a personal and team level, play with confidence of a #2 seed!

RE: WBB: Stanford 55 Missouri State 46 - chimera - 03-30-2019

My eyes hurt and I have a headache from watching that offense.  The whole team lost their collective minds out there on offense.  Missouri State played good defense, ok, but nothing special compared to what we've seen out of longer, quicker teams.  Did anyone aside from Wilson play well?  Yeah, ND will be licking their chops to play us after watching that.  Can't shoot wide open threes and layups, tentative passing and shooting, just a weird game.  Hope they got it out of their system.  Ouch.  I hate to complain about the refs because Missouri State deserves credit for befuddling us (which frankly they shouldn't have been able to do, not even close), but the refs were...not good.  Missouri State is a good, scrappy team that was no gimme but we should still have won by 20+ with play 75% as good as we have played recently on offense.  Stinker and lucky to win.  Hope they take a deep breath and don't play tight or whatever that was.  All that said, E8 is great and congrats to the team on getting there, no matter how ugly the game was.  I need to go rinse out my eyeballs.  If you missed the game, do not watch the replay.

RE: WBB: Stanford 55 Missouri State 46 - 2006alum - 03-30-2019

Williams had a really big bandage/gauze pad on the back of her head/beck that I've never seen before. I wonder if that could have affected her shooting? I have to imagine it'd be really irritating to have a big pad rubbing up against the back of your neck all night. Seems pretty small, but the tiniest thing if it gets in your head can affect your shot.

I can remember a few games where Carrington or Smith have off nights shooting, but I cannot ever recall Williams shooting so poorly, which makes me wonder if maybe something was up.

Interesting that Alanna said that the team wasn't worried, but then Tara later said: "But it was -- I was not sure what Alanna wasn't worried about. I don't know what game she was at. I mean, wow. We just -- we tried a lot of different things. We tried a lot of different people, and we struggled."

As we all commented, the team all acted very worried and tentative, not playing with confidence or self-assurance

I did not notice the bandage, that might explain a lot.

After a hot start to the season, Williams went through a somewhat prolonged shooting slump mid season.  For example, at Buffalo she was 1/6 and vs. CSUN she was 0/4.  What made this game so strange was that once she started missing she just kept shooting and missing.  I don't remember if we have ever had a 0/11 three point performance out of anybody before.  Usually after quite a few misses the player doesn't take any more shots, preferring alternatives. Tara must have told her to just keep shooting.

I noticed that most of her shots were too strong.  That could be a sign that she was too amped up.  Maybe in a second game she won't be overshooting so much and they will all go in.  If she were to go 11/11 on Monday we would have a chance!

The "analysts" were too busy rooting for Missouri State to do any analysis.

RE: WBB: Stanford 55 Missouri State 46 - 76lsjumb - 03-30-2019

Much hand-wringing over the offense.  I guess it depends on what is meant by "the offense."  If it means moving the ball around, making reasonably good reads and passes and getting open shots, both long-range and short-, then it looked to me like one of the best "offense" games they played all season [at least for the first three quarters].  On the other hand, if it means actually making the baskets after doing all of those other things, then not so much... [insert massive understatement emoji here].

I will say, though, our offense in the fourth quarter looked like it was being guest-coached by David Shaw.  We were playing the basketball equivalent of two runs up the middle, a pass [often unsuccessful] and a punt -- keeping the clock running and managing to maintain a margin just large enough not to lose.  Tough to watch but, as it has been more often than not under Shaw, it worked.

Fortunately, since we seemed to be playing like we thought we couldn't lose, Missouri State seemed to respond by playing like they thought they couldn't win. They needed an Alison Feaster, but no one stepped up.

At the risk of reading too much into the quote, I think Tara could have disagreed with Alanna without seemingly calling her out. "I don't know what game she was at" is a bit much, particularly directed at a senior that has meant so much to the program. Hopefully, the tone was better than the transcript indicates.

RE: WBB: Stanford 55 Missouri State 46 - qwerty49 - 03-30-2019

Watching this game ranked just behind watching a 6-3 football game played in a blizzard and just ahead of having a root canal with the anesthesia starting to wear off.

I want to say we won it with our defense but Missouri State missed a lot of seemingly easy shots.

RE: WBB: Stanford 55 Missouri State 46 - 81alum - 03-31-2019

Here is the full context of Tara's remarks about Smith:

ALANNA SMITH: I would say that, yes, we have experienced shooting trouble. Probably not to the extent that it was like tonight. Usually we'll start off a little not great in the first half and then pick it up in the second, but it persisted the whole game. Honestly, I think the feeling on the team was we weren't worried. We know that we can hit down those shots, and we weren't today, so we had to go to something else. And I think Tara said it, you could just tell that we stayed with things, no matter what our percentage was. No one was freaking out, and I think that was really good on part of everybody on our team because we kept each other accountable, we kept each other in the game.
...
TARA VANDERVEER: That was an absolute root canal. You know, again, I think that there are some real positive things that came out of that. I thought we worked really hard on defense, to hold a team as talented as they are to 46 points, and we've really hung our hat on our defense, and today we actually -- we got on the glass a little bit better. We out-rebounded them, and I have never seen -- I can't ever remember a Stanford team that has struggled so much from the field, not just threes, but lay-ups, you know. And to move on to the Elite 8 with a game like that, I'm so glad that's not our last game because I really believe we're a lot better than that. But it was -- I was not sure what Alanna wasn't worried about. I don't know what game she was at. I mean, wow. We just --we tried a lot of different things. We tried a lot of different people, and we struggled. But it was -- we found a way to win, which is -- this is March, and it's survive and advance.

As our ugly win soaks in, I've been absorbing that really bad announcing.  On the one had, they were obviously rooting for the Cinderella team.   But part of their being bad was not just their bias but also not keeping us well informed about the game.  For example, they did keep us informed about Smith's foul trouble, but I lost track of Carrington's foul trouble which also had an impact.  For some reason I did not realize she had 4 fouls until looking at the box score, and she also had 2 of them in the first half.  So 2 of our big 3 were in foul trouble and the 3rd went 0 for 11.

And did any of you notice that Andy Landers couldn't pronounce DiJonai's name?  I've kind of like Landers in the past, and certainly prefer him as an announcer to the coach who beat us in the sweet 16 in 2013.  But he was given a script to read and didn't have the foggiest idea how to pronounce the name, which tells me he hadn't watched a single Stanford game this year.

RE: WBB: Stanford 55 Missouri State 46 - M T - 03-31-2019

For those of us that think this is the eve of destruction, here are the records among the elite-8 teams:
  ND (3-1)
  Stanford (2-1)
  Oregon (2-1)
  Baylor (1-1)
  UConn (1-2)
  Louisville (1-2)
  Miss St (0-1)
  Iowa (0-1)

Fortunately, nothing about Saturday's performance carries over to Monday except the win.
There is no penalty for being seeded #2 (other than whom we face and where we're playing).
The game starts at 0-0.
