Am I missing something here?

The committee does have an option that they had to use in 2017 at Rich Harvest Farms in the Chicago area. They cancelled one day of medal play for the women because they were too far behind from weather delays to catch up. The low 8 teams after 54 holes advanced to match play.

As with other sports, the schedule for the golf championships is dictated by tv. Starting in 2015, the Golf Channel has televised the men's and women's final rounds of stroke play and the 3 match play rounds. These are scheduled for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday because the Golf Channel is already committed to airing pro events Thursday-Sunday.

Risk of weather delays should be lessened for the next 3 years. The men's and women's championships will be held at Grayhawk GC, a public course in Scottsdale, AZ.

Got it - that's helpful, thanks. And yeah, while AZ will be reliably HOT this time of year, at least it's just hot, not hot, humid, with the possibility of lightning storms, thunder storms, hail, and/or tornadoes...

Last week’s Pac 12 track meet in Tucson was delayed 4 hours for lightening

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-18-2019

The committee has decided to shorten the stroke play portion of the tournament from 72 to 54 holes. Round 2 will continue tomorrow at 10 am central. Players on the course will pick up where they left off.  The teams in the 2nd wave will start their play at the 1st and 10th tees at 10 am as well.

All 24 teams will play their 3rd rounds on Monday with the low 8 then advancing to match play.

Thanks for the update.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - oldalum - 05-18-2019

3 rounds makes yesterday's great start even more important. In the second round so far, though, we've lost some of the distance between us and the 9th place team.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-19-2019

Stanford creeping down the leaderboard as the team struggles over the final 3 holes. They will probably end up the day in 6th or 7th which will make tomorrow even more pressured.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Hulk01 - 05-19-2019

At this point, we still are in a  good spot.
So many teams contending for a top eight spot
still have to play all or most of yesterday's round.
Lots of bogeys left to put on their cards.
Players today are on pace for average rounds of 79-80.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - oldalum - 05-19-2019

yes, the only hot team that will leapfrog us IF they continue their current torrid play is Illinois. Purdue, UCLA, Washington and Ole Miss are lurking 1-3 shots back of us, so we have to hope they fall back further (likely). We know we'll start with just a 4-shot cushion over Auburn and Wake Forest. We are going to have to play well tomorrow (hopefully not too well).

Speaking of slog, tomorrow's weather may make it a long, tough day for everyone. Forecast is thunderstorms, continuing into the day on Sunday.

Also a reminder that the scores we see on the tracker are not official until after the round is concluded. Texas team score just adjusted down one stroke after final scorecard verification.
At this point we have a 4 stroke cushion over 7 and 8.  ASU and Purdue are part of that pack, but still have a lot of golf to play, so my guess is that they will drop below 8.   4 strokes on this course is not a lot, so we really need to avoid those big numbers on anyone hole.  Having to count a quadruple bogey hurts.  There is almost certain to be a say 1 stroke difference between 8 and 9.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - oldalum - 05-19-2019

as hoped, the teams behind us that are on the course are slowly falling back. We are at +20, 2 teams on the course are at +24, and 3 are at +25. Illinois has cooled off to +27. If this keeps up, the cut line will be somewhere over +24 starting tomorrow's round.

Yep.
As of the time I write, the top six teams are all finished with round 2, with Stanford sixth at +20. Tied for ninth are also Auburn and Wake at +24 and also finished round 2. Thus, it looks like those still on the course (with much still to play) will move on upwards so that Auburn and Wake will end up tied for 7th and 8th and +24 will be the 8 position after this round.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - 2006alum - 05-19-2019

Let's not get ahead of ourselves quite yet - Ole Miss just tied us and Purdue is just one behind. Still a lot of golf left to play...

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - oldalum - 05-19-2019

and still a lot of bogeys out there, too. We lost 5 strokes this morning on the last 3 holes. Maybe the course is/will be playing a little easier, but we'll see.

OK so Northwestern snuck in at +23 so the cut line almost certainly will be right at +24, which means we will have just a 3-shot cushion starting out tomorrow. Not ideal but not a bad place to be, just gotta go earn it tomorrow.

______________________________________________________

And Purdue ended at +22. So we are in 6th place at +20, followed by:

+22 Purdue
+23 Northwestern
________________________[cut line]
+24 Wake Forest, Auburn
+27 Ole Miss
+28 Ariz. St.
+31 Florida

Those are the teams who will be our competition tomorrow. Arkansas and Arizona are at +14 so within reach of us if we play well.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - 2006alum - 05-19-2019

The one thing that concerns me is that we had the worst day 2 of all the teams in the top ten: every team's collective score was above 300 for day one, but every team but us was below 300 on day two. One more day with similar results and we'll be out, so we need to play comparatively better tomorrow than today vis-a-vis everyone else.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - oldalum - 05-19-2019

I think it was a disadvantage for us relative to some of the other teams in the top 10 to have to come back this morning to play just the last 3-5 holes, under vastly different conditions from the day before, such as green speeds. For example, we played holes 16-18 in +5 this morning, while Purdue, Northwestern, and Ole Miss each played them at even par at the end of their rounds today. Had we done the same, we'd have had a similar round 2 score as all but the top 2 teams. Hopefully the teams will all be competing under the same conditions tomorrow.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-19-2019

Stanford tees off for the 3rd and final stroke play round starting at 11:55 am central/9:55 am pacific. Playing with familiar opponent Arizona and the home team Arkansas.

Round 2 average scores were 3.7 shots lower per player than round 1. Stanford only posted 1 shot lower per player so they definitely gave up shots to the field. Last year in a similar position, Andrea Lee went out and shot a tournament low 65 to help Stanford qualify (though not comfortably as both Liu and Valenzuela shot 77). Stanford really needs its best round of the tournament to advance.

4 strokes from not making match play is a little too close for comfort. Our ladies are gonna have to come out and play better tomorrow. Another 300 isn't going to make the cut.

How they set the course up for the final round will make some difference as will the weather.  Forecast looks like some rain is possible in the PM and severe weather also seems possible, but not likely.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Hulk01 - 05-20-2019

Weather Channel reports 80% chance of rain this afternoon, possible severe thunderstorms.

The course's already thick rough will be wet, making shots from it even more treacherous.  We're likely to see a surplus of double bogeys and worse.

Two solid rounds from the trio of Krauter, Wang and Liu should get us in.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-20-2019

Golf course is kicking back today. Playing tough, more like R1 than R2. The Golf Channel will start their broadcast today at 1 pm pacific. But they will likely have reporting from the course (as well as lots of talking heads) during the pre-game show.

The focus today for the tv folks is the competition for the low individual, the medalist. Sierra Brooks from Florida leads right now at -4 after a stellar 6 under par 67 yesterday. Valenzuela is Stanford's low individual, 5 shots back in 6th place. Golf Channel will balance that with the race for the top 8.
