No guarantees in baseball, but if you think Stanford's away-game experience has prepared them for what they are about to step into, you are mistaken.  From what I have seen, the most to attend a Stanford away game was a little over 3,000.  Their regional games typically drew under 1k.

At Dudy Noble they will be surrounded by 11,000+ loyal, vocal fans who are REALLY into their baseball team.  Here are a couple of links to videos that might give you a hint.

If all college games were like those three,
I'd stop watching them.  Really.
FWIW, this is what the father of Central Michigan's 1B posted on twitter RE: their experience in Starkville:

"Thanks Steve for taking the time to write those kind words, I believe every parent would tell you the exact same. It was the most fun and memorable season that we have been a part of. Bitter sweet as my son is a senior and walked off a college baseball field for the last time yesterday, I could not have chosen a better place than on the Dudy Noble field!  AWESOME experience!  The baseball God's were looking down on us for our regional selection. Thx Starkville, had a blast!!"

Oh, and this was our house this past weekend:

Maybe Stanford will be rattled by the environment in Game 1, but they will acclimate to it if they are.  I would imagine the large crowd will fire up the Stanford players because they will be excited to play on such a big stage, knowing it only gets bigger if they win. If Stanford loses the series I'm not going to claim they would have won on their home field, and I don't think any MSU fans would want to hear such nonsense either.

Following up on an earlier post, SEC Freshman of the Year and Co-National Freshman Pitcher of the Year JT Ginn still seems questionable for the Bulldogs this weekend. Would be a big break for the Card.

RE: Baseball Super Regional - OutsiderFan - 06-07-2019

It appears both the rain and temp forecast have moderated quite a bit. Doesn’t look like anything warmer than 82 all weekend and even when it does rain, it looks like isolated and small thundershowers. Still relatively high dew points but it’s not gonna be miserable. Could have been way worse.

RE: Baseball Super Regional - Hulk01 - 06-07-2019

It's not clear to me why some folks call this rookie pitcher the Dawg's ace.
He's their number two starter, and leads the Andromeda Galaxy in wild pitches,
and has allowed eight runs in his last eleven innings.

Ethan Small is the Bulldog's ace, no?

As far as I can see, nobody has.

It seems I came the closest, calling him "Mississippi State's star frosh pitcher". Given that he was named the co-National Freshman Pitcher of the Year that seems legitimate.

It's true that he only went 2.1 then 3.0 innings his last two games, which seems to be that sore arm thing that has him questionable for our series. Scouting reports indicate a high 90s fastball and a plus slider, which would make him very dangerous to us (or anybody). On the other hand, a less than 100% kid with a not-overwhelming fastball and a missing slider could be better for our hitters than whomever the next guy is.

And, here is a feature on Stanford from the local(ish) paper. While basically accurate, it's not particularly ... nuanced.

I was able to watch most of the second Fresno ST game and Stanford looks like a gritty baseball team. As a Mississippi State fan, I'm looking forward to seeing one of college baseballs best programs at DNF.

Offensively, this MSU team has a balance of experienced battle tested players and a good bit of FR/SO talent. Our lineup is very aggressive at the plate and will swing early in counts. That can be both a strength and a weakness. We can get ourselves out early in counts if you use the aggressiveness against us. The lineup is very balanced in terms of power/average/speed. That said, our lineup goes as Jake Mangum goes.

On the mound, we rely on establishing plus counts and will pound the zone with fastballs. Ethan Small throws fastballs at a 80% clip and does a great job changing the eye level using fastballs up in the zone. He is very deceptive and lives at 88-93....though he hit 96 a few times Friday. Ginn has elite stuff but had to be pulled from Friday's game because of "soreness." He missed two starts earlier in the year for the same cause. That said, our coaching staff is being very cautious and his status going into the week is unknown. I personally think he will pitch Game 3. Plumlee, our #3 starter, has been very good. It would not shock me to see him get the nod in game 2. Out of the pen, we will rely on a mix of sinker ballers, cutters, and power. Our most reliable have been Gordon and Liebelt.

I've included a link to our baseball stats/schedule information in the event you're curious. I've also included a link to our official baseball Twitter account which will keep you up to date on regional information.

If any of you have specific questions related to our lineup/pitchers, post them here. And if you find yourself in Starkville on Satuday, I hope you have an enjoyable experience. It is a unique place to watch a baseball game. I'm looking forward to a fun series.
Thanks Bob23, very informative, objective, and thoughtful report. I know next to nothing about your team, but they appear to be top rate and a tough assignment for Stanford especially in Starkville.

That also means Fresno State will probably never play Cal again unless in a Bowl Game. I know San Jose State fans have been a tad on the boorish side at Stanford games, but can't hold a candle to Fresno State. It is pretty sad though, that neither Cal or Stanford will play SJS or FSU any more in football it seems. Neither school wants to play at Cal or Stanford without a home game in return, and no way Cal and Stanford are going to play at SJS or Fresno. Perhaps Levi's Stadium, but no way at home.

Turning back to Super Regional and the series strategy...

I agree it's unwise to match Stanford's best starter against MSU's best on Saturday. I would start the #3 in Game 1, #1 in Game 2, and #2 in Game 3. Basically play rope a dope in Game 1, then have the best guy in the most important game between the first two, and then you take your chances with your #2 in Game 3, knowing the best guy from MSU can probably come in for a couple innings if there is a Game 3.

Hey, GoDawgs, just an FYI: Stanford was 21-4 away from home this season. So don't expect a home field advantage (unless given by the umpiring crew). The better team will win period.

I like opening with Williams. Besides "matching" the strategy you mentioned, I think his excellent control and strong recent outings will keep us in the game until late when we will have a good chance to pull it out and win regardless of how good the Miss St pitcher is. I suspect that we won't get many hits of Small, but if a close game late, our long ball capabilities might well be enough to get by.

I would then use Beck in game 2 and Miller in game 3 if there is a game 3. However, if we lose game 1, might want to throw Miller in game 2; a play by ear situation. I would save Will M.  for middle/long relief as necessary. I think he's most effective in that role and he's a guy who could come in more than one game if needed.

RE: Baseball Super Regional - BobK - 06-07-2019

Miller
Beck
My first two choices. Don’t want to save my best for a game that doesn’t happen

Ethan Small is the Mississippi State ace. He is a battle tested arm that has been in several big time games. He has great command and can really be at his best when his changeup is complementing his fastball.

Ginn has been great all year as well. He entered the season with a ton of hype because he is a first round pick that turned down money. He has lived up to it. That said, he is also a true freshman that has battled tightness in his arm. I think a lot of it is being extremely cautious as Ginn looks to be a top-10 pick next year. I also feel a lot of it is getting acclimated to the demand a "Power 5" pitcher goes through every weekend. Ginn stays around 91-95 and has a true swing and miss pitch with the slider.

If I had to bet, my bet would be you guys see Plumlee on Sunday night. He has been very good lately and is a senior. I think Lemonis will give him the baseball. As for Ginn, my question is will we see him Monday. Nothing has been announced regarding our rotation but that is how I would bet we play it.

RE: Baseball Super Regional - Hulk01 - 06-07-2019

Ginn's SEC stats:
5.01 runs per nine innings
and a 1.30 WHIP.

Gets a lot of strikeouts,
but his walk and wild pitch numbers
have gone way up.

Looks like a great prospect
who is struggling a bit since his very hot start.

To GoDawgs, Bob23MS, and Blacklistedbully,

Thank you all for contributing meaningfully to this thread during the runup to our series in Starkville.  I hope you have felt welcome and appreciated as you shared your knowledge and enthusiasm for Mississippi State Baseball and the fan experience.

As a bonus, you got to experience a bit of thread drift as the discussion shifted to humidity's effect on a baseball's flight.  We eventually did get back to the key issue of pitching matchups though.

Let's play ball.  And let's continue the respectful dialogue during the series.

Geaux Cardinal!

Thank you for the welcome.  Trust me...our boards are at least as inclined to drift off-topic.  Nature of the beast.

You'd be surprised by how many might claim it.  Sometimes it's true, even if it is whining and comes across as being a sore-loser.  I love our home-field advantage, and think it can and often does make a difference, whether it's making the other team a little too excitable or boosting our kid's energy in a positive way.

But what makes me nervous as hell is the thought of Ethan Small getting the start, pitching a couple of innings, only to then get a weather delay long enough to lose him for the game.  Given he is one of the top pitchers in the nation, that would be a brobdingnagian hit for us, and a major advantage for you.

Personally, I have been occasionally guilty of, "complaining about losses due to bad breaks, etc", but it's almost always been as a response to an opposing school's fan instigating it.

For example, not long ago I got into an exchange with an Oregon State fan who was bitching about SEC schools getting too much favorable treatment in the rankings.  He referenced as proof Oregon State dispatching my school & Arkansas en-route to the CWS championship.  I replied to him he should consider last year they had to beat Miss. State twice to get into the CG vs Arky, including our stud pitcher, Ethan Small, and clearly enjoyed quite a bit of luck to go with their great play.

They buried us in the first game against our #3, largely due to 9 walks + 2 hit batters, but we knew they'd have to go against our ace in the winner-takes-all 2nd game.  But the day before the 2nd game, Small, in a freakish accident during batting practice got hit on the inside elbow of his pitching arm by a line drive.  He was down on the field for several minutes in serious pain.  He still pitched the next day, and while decent, was clearly not his usual self.  Gave up 5 runs in one inning, and we lost 5-2.

Is it not legit (even if whining) to speculate the outcome might have been different had Small been close to 100%?  We've seen what a dominating pitcher he is when healthy.

Then with Arky, they were literally a bungled foul pop-up from beating OSU in the CG.  Bizarre good fortune for OSU in both games.  So I brought this up to the OSU fan, not because I liked whining, rather to somewhat refute his original insinuation that OSU had, "kicked our asses" proving the Pac 12 was superior to the SEC.

Any of you Stanford fans going to the games?  If so, make sure you get to the outfield (Left Field Lounge) to experience the best part of taking in a game at, "The Dude".  Go hungry if you can, and wear your Stanford gear proudly.  You'll get fed and offered drinks as long as you're not acting like jerks.

RE: Baseball Super Regional - GoDawgs - 06-07-2019

I've enjoyed the off-topic discussion. Only adds to the stigma of Stanford graduates being well-educated.

Stanford is by far my favorite PAC-12 team to pull for. Academic prowess, elite athletic programs, a highly entertaining marching band, and you're not USC. I hope we can schedule a home-and-home football game in the not so distance future.

UCLA goes down to that #3 seed from Oregon State’s Regional, Michigan. They led 3-0 going to bottom of 9th, then promptly gave up 2 runs before getting out of 1st and 3rd jam with 1 out to prevail.
