Grigson should never see another major NFL job. But I also blame Irsay. If I am him I’m pulling Grigson into my office and I’m saying look you idiot we just paid a pretty penny for this guy and he’s our future he’s our franchise put an offensive line around him before you do anything else. Or go work somewhere else you stupid idiot. It was an obvious conclusion. But not so to Grigson. Idiot.

Angry. There are three Stanford QBs that I had the honor to watch that were generational talents. They provided us so much joy. Two of them, Jim Plunkett, who was, I believe selected as the greatest college QB of the 20th century, and Andrew Luck, the most complete and most highly rated college QB to hit the NFL probably since 1982, (and you know why I picked that year) played for organizations that threw them to the wolves and allowed them to be physically destroyed.

I once read an NFL exec say he’d never seen a QB taking a beating like Plunkett did. It took him a couple of shell shocked years at SF and then on the bench to recover enough where he could lead a team twice to SB wins. When talent wise, he was a shadow of himself.

Luck played in an era where they protected players more, particularly QBs. But he still got pummeled. Over and over again. Broken ribs (he played and led a comeback win). A lacerated kidney ( he played and pissed blood after the game).

Plunkett had Chuck Fairbanks. That SOB had him running the option. Luck had Grigson. I read that when he left, Indy had the 4th lowest paid offense in the league. The lowestbpaid unit - offensive line. He signed Luck then used his money on the defense. After all, why protect him.

The third is, of course, Elway. And frankly his physical gifts were so overwhelming that he was able to avoid the pitfalls to an extent. He could escape a lot of hits. But as much as I disliked the offensive philosophy that Reeves employed, I do believe that organization gave him some protection.

I was looking forward to Luck hoisting the Lombardi one day. But instead I will savor the memories.

And I will detest the Indianapolis Colts from here on out.

Well, we already had a lot of reasons to hate the Colts. You start with Irsay's cowardly decision to leave Baltimore in the middle of the night, breaking the hearts of the Baltimore fans who had cheered for Johnny Unitas and company. Then you add to that their hiring of Frank Kush, who Elway wisely snubbed. And now the ruination of the greatest quarterback talent of a generation by a foolish and incompetent management. To be honest, my hatred for Indianapolis would be keener except I have gradually been losing interest in professional sports, and especially professional football, for years now.  It is hard for me to form attachment to teams of mercenaries.

There is no arguing the reality that the Colts didn’t invest in an O line to protect their prized QB asset. I think it’s also fair to say Luck, believing his size and toughness would allow him to handle anything on a NFL field, took unwise liberties with his body.

He seemed to take a lot of unnecessary punishment trying to make plays in the open field for his team, rather than limiting the hits he took. I remember watching him play earlier in his career thinking he wasn’t going to last long in the game if he played this way.

It was great to see Chris Ballard build a very good OL last year so Luck could finally play with some protection. Speaking of Ballard, for my money, he’s a Top 5 GM in the NFL. Too bad he wasn’t there sooner.

I've held back commenting as I process this big development. But here's where I am on a lot of the last 48 hours news:

I am really bummed I wont get to watch Andrew Luck do amazing things on the football field. He was just so fun to watch and fun to root for as a person. I'm also bummed he won't have an opportunity to show his true potential with a strong GM and coach supporting him. So much unfulfilled potential.

On the other hand, I've been grappling with the immoral nature of watching football. It's the sport I most enjoy watching and yet it leaves so many people broken (and broke) at the end of the pipeline. It may work out for Stanford grads who made the right 40 year decision, but on the whole, I doubt the benefit it provides players. Not having Luck suit up will make it that much easier for me to stop following the NFL.

I think it's greater than 50% that Luck comes out of retirement in a couple of years and finds another team to play with. If the issue is the mental and physical grind he's been through the past 2 years, a few full years away from the field may erase all of that and he may learn he misses the game more than he thought.

As for the the Indy fans, I wonder if some of the "boos" that were heard in the stadium were just wailing and gnashing of teeth at the thought of losing Luck. I have a hard time believing those fans would boo someone who had gone through so much for their franchise.

I doubt Andrew Luck is ever coming back. As has been noted (I think by David Lombardi or one of our other sometimes posters who write for a loving), “The NFL needs Andrew Luck a whole hell of a lot more than Andrew Luck needs the League.”

True. Because he had to make plays for that team to win. A smart HC and GM would have called him into there office and tell him to avoid so many hits. Get rid of the ball. Etc. And they would have figured out ways to get the ball out sooner. Luck eventually got that smart HC and GM with Reich and Ballard. They did both. Unfortunately it was too late.

Well, time will tell. I don't think Luck "needs" the NFL but anticipate he will simply "want" to get back on the field and test his mettle once he's at 100% health. Like I said, I think it's >50% so by no means a certainty. Part of me really wants to see him reach his potential. The other part is glad I have one less reason to watch guys beat out their brains on the field.

The word “fan” is derived from “fanatic”. With good reason. The reaction would have been the same anywhere. These guys are modern day gladiators. Joe and Jane Sixpack, be they in Indy or Santa Clara, don’t care about the health of the person. They can’t. If they did they wouldn’t watch the game.

I truly wish I could stop watching football. But I’m a fan......

A short while ago, Andrew was blasted for letting down his teammates, his fans, indeed the whole fricking NFL by selfishly retiring. The blaster: a longtime journeyman NFL QB with few career highlights named Steve Beuerlein.

After a 21-18 record leading (natch) the Golden Domers, he rode six different pro benches. Here's the wiki entry's money quote on

Beuerlein:
"The newly renamed Arizona Cardinals hired Buddy Ryan as both head coach and general manager in 1994. Beuerlein was benched after week 2 after an 0-2 start. Ryan called him 'one of the worst quarterbacks he had ever seen' and  stated to the press that Beuerlein was 'a cancer that needed to be cut out.'"

With all due respect, these posts that, simply stated, suggest that watching football is somehow immoral or indicative that the spectators "don't care about the health of the person" are getting a little tedious. Andrew Luck [and Doug Baldwin and ...etc etc] are highly intelligent persons who voluntarily chose to play football for reasons that they presumably considered seriously before starting [and continuing] to play the game. They weighed the risks and kept playing until, having again weighed the risks, they decided to stop.  Voluntarily and making their own informed decisions.

There are myriad activities that fall into this category, with much higher risks.  Alex Honnold climbs sheer stone faces without a rope. Mario Andretti drove Indy cars at 250+ miles per hour. James Lovell went into space.

People [including me] spectated, and enjoyed, all of these activities, and I don't think any of them was shameful [much less immoral] for doing so.  Certainly, there are spectators who go to car races for the crashes and, perhaps, even watch climbers on El Capitan hoping to see someone fall.  Those people, I entirely agree, are shameful. But, I'm confident that nobody on this Board watches football games for the purpose of seeing players get injured

The players -- and, certainly, players at Stanford -- are not, in fact, "gladiators," at least in the sense that they are being forced to play football.  They are adults exercising their own independent judgment to do something they have decided is worth it.  Why is it wrong to cheer for that?
