You didn't think he looked good against Arizona?
Tough crowd.
Arizona had the worst defense in the conference. (Yes, counting us.)
They fired their DC, DL coach, and LB coach literally the day after we hung 41 on them. That's how little respect they believe our offense deserved.
No doubt Arizona's defense wasn't very good, but as I watched the game it appeared to me he was throwing the ball very well, as opposed to the opposition merely sucking. Maybe I'm too easy to please, though.

This is certainly true. The had almost no talent, and played worse than that!

Sorry, but you can't conclude that our offense was bad from the fact they fired their defensive coaches. As you yourself pointed out, their defense was the worst in the conference. That wasn't news. There was lots of hatred and discontent in the fan base about this issue, as well as several others (QB usage, for example). Something had to be done. So they did something. That says nothing much about our offense. We scored the same number of points that USC did the week before. From that I believe you can conclude exactly nothing.

- Oregon
- Wazzu

This list of schools suggests Costello is thought of very highly in college football circles.
Fromm has in fact declared for the NFL draft.

Georgia signed Carson Beck of Jacksonville, Florida, who was ranked the No. 16 pocket passer by ESPN Recruiting.
The Bulldogs are expected to explore the graduate transfer market. Stanford's K.J. Costello and Wake Forest's Jamie Newman recently entered the NCAA transfer portal.

Costello visited UW. I wish him the best . . . outside of the Pac-12.

Would be a poor decision for both KJ and UW IMO.
For KJ: UW loses their top RB, TE, 2 WRs, and 2-3 OL from last season's underperforming offense. Their new OC is suspect. Going to a division rival feels pretty middle-fingery. (No wonder Cal fans detest Brennan Scarlett. I would too.)
For UW: more than likely one of their younger QBs - who are all pretty highly rated - will be pissed a grad transfer came in and will leave (e.g. Colson Yankoff transferred when Eason came in last year). Not healthy for the pipeline.

Jake Haener transferred out too. Wherever KJ goes I hope he has a coach who can teach him to look off his primary. He will throw for 4,500 yards at Starkville.

It would be hard for KJ Costello to live in Starkville, MS after being in cosmopolitan and diverse places in So and Nor Cal, but from a career development standpoint, I can't see any place making more sense than playing his final year for Mike Leach. Here's why:
First, KJ was touted as a top NFL prospect going into last season. He was known for and already proven he can run a "pro style" offense. That means he's familiar with protections and more sophisticated offensive concepts that what Leach runs.
Second, Costello will have a chance to play Alabama, Auburn and LSU defenses, that if he performs well against will heighten his draft value in the eyes of NFL personnel people.
Third, he'll get an opportunity to play in a system that has proven over and over and over that a QB can pick it up quickly and put up big numbers; no steep learning curve to learn the offense.
Fourth, he's already got the Stanford degree, so why worry about school anymore when he's thinking of an NFL career. There is no shame coming from Mississippi State after proving yourself at Stanford.

Yeah, I think Mississippi State would be an ideal place for KJ.
He's going to be concentrating on football anyway, so who really cares that Starkville isn't, say, San Francisco.

Well reasoned. Only question from a football standpoint is how much of a beating he might take at MSU. If I’m KJ I am looking quite heavily into what they have coming back on the offensive line. The thing about the air raid is he’s gonna throw throw throw, of course. And he’s not particularly mobile.
I’ll never forget a game at Stanford years ago (12 or 13 I think) – back in those wonderful days when they beat Washington state. I think the quarterback was Halliday. WSU threw something like 70 times. I think they ran it ONCE in the first half. He got the absolute crap beat out of him. I had a lot of respect for him after that game. And none for Leach. He let the kid get slaughtered.
That would be my concern playing for Leach in the SEC.

The OL is for sure a concern, but IMHO not the only one. Equally important is what do they have in the way of receivers. Leach is sort of starting from scratch with the air raid at MSU. At WSU the grad transfer QBs had a known crop of good receivers. It probably won't go so well for KJ at MSU if they don't have that. It is also worth looking at the defense. If MSU is so bad on defense that they can't win many games (no matter what KJ does) it will hurt his draft position. In most cases, winners get the publicity and hype. There are exceptions, but it is probably not wise to count on that.
Then again, what are his other options? You can only choose between your alternatives. Is Michigan a possibility, or is that not on the table?

Weird, I can’t imagine Costello ever considering msu — why go backwards in life?
He’s been learning a pro-style system, which is why i imagine he looked at uw. Why go backwards to an air raid? He showed he can run a pro style, he brings the most value and grows the most building on that.
It’s also strange to me that the issue of character doesn’t seem to come up as often as it should. I don’t just dislike Mike Leach as an opponent, I think he’s a particularly bad person. As a parent, I’d never want a person like Leach playing a role in my child’s development. Character helps ppl like Shaw, Petersen, and Duke’s Coach K recruit. It’s a reason why larger programs never scooped up Leach despite his results.
Also, as a practical consideration, I think anyone joining leach early on is heading into a lot of pain. I could see them going through five quarterbacks this year.

Hey John, have you happened to read the neighborhood blog, Nextdoor Golden Gate Heights about one of the choice places to live in The City? Rife with tales of smash and grab, car theft, wheel theft, home invasion, mugging on Irving, Noriega and Taraval, blocking driveways keeping working people late for work waiting for SFPD tow and other affronts to quality of life. The wonderful City of Bobbbbb's and my youth is falling apart.
Starkville doesn't look too bad in that context.

How many here were born in The City? And the City is so nice to tourists. Plenty of broken glass from rental cars parked near Hyde and Lombard, the 16th Avenue steps, Seal Rock overlook.
Born and raised, loved what it offered to kids, teens, sports fans, shoppers, protection for residents, yada, yada. Now if a cop views a smash and grab the officer writes a citation and the perp walks. The new DA is at war with the POA. 84 year old women are beaten up on 16th and Rivera. Kids walk to school in the Haight and dodge human feces.
How many of you 40 year decision folks live in Atherton, Menlo and Play. How is the property crime down there?

I live in Palo Alto and love it here. It still feels clean and safe, though reading the newspaper tells me there is property crime. The worst I've experienced personally is someone stealing an Amazon package off my front porch. It contained one $8 box of my favorite tea, so no great loss.

It’s odd but not uncommon for some cardboarders that a thread about kj entering the transfer portal somehow becomes (again) all about complaining about san francisco.
While I agree the bay area in general and sf in particular have problems, especially related to property crimes, housing shortages, income inequality, and homelessness, I think a lot of the complaining is silly. I travel across the US to diverse locations and there are problems everywhere. There are homeless problems, housing shortages and traffic problems in hawaii. Where my in-laws live in mississippi often there are water safety/potability issuss after storms, the water, beaches and shellfish are still suspect to me since the BP spills, and an alligator has been spotted recently at the nearby pond. One of my in-laws was so concerned about the medical services in the region that she flew to nyc to have her cancer treated. Plus that area where we drove has the scariest, nastiest, and most dangerously reckless drivers I have encountered anywhere. You could say that’s unfair because most drivers in mississippi are careful and friendly, but a relatively small number of people can ruin many people’s experiences. it’s more likely you’d feel endangered by aggressive drivers in mississippi or new orleans (sorry nola folks) than step in human feces in sf (which i personally have never seen).
And I don’t mean to bag on the southeast. Nola had many friendly people and we ate some amazing southern food. We were lucky enough to be in nola during a music festival and the event, music, and people were wonderful. The kids love the nola bug museum. It has its bright spots and its problems.
But I see no point in complaining about sf — i doubt many people who complain go there regularly. I just spent the weekend there last week and had a great time. The fresh ham and cheese croissant from Arsicault Cafe was one of the most amazing new things I’ve tried in the last year or so.

Yeah, I threw SF into my comment because I figured there is a lot more to do there than some bedroom community.
My point was I think Costello is going to be concentrating on football and won't be too concerned that Starkville isn't (pick whatever town you think is nirvana).
