RE: WBB: Stanford @ Oregon Thursday 6pm - Madera86 - 01-16-2020

BC

I was going to post that we've played three of the weakest teams in the conference, but somehow Cal is 2-1, and Washington State just beat Oregon by 11.

Don't give up on this team just yet.  There is a lot of season left to play, and this team will get whacked once or twice more I'm pretty sure.  But recall that last year Oregon beat Stanford by 40 at Maples, but then who got the last laugh?

But for Stanford to have a chance in the rematch, Tara must change the game approach.  Stanford has depth - I'd say much better depth than Oregon.  I would play all my guards and hound Ionescu for 90 feet - play ball denial, even.  Dog her all over the floor and tire her out.  Wilson should have played 20 minutes tonight; and maybe even Brown 5+ minutes.  Keep rotating in fresh legs for defensive purposes.

Also, the high pick and roll defense was really poor..  The big needs to flash and recover.  There was virtually none of that.  If the guard didn't fight through the (leaning?) screen at the top, then it was either a switch (mismatch), or the guard went under leaving open the trey.  Just bad defense.

Others have hit on O-boarding . . . it wasn't good, either.  Some of that were bricked treys and long rebounds, but too many were just the Ducks out-fighting Stanford for better position under the rim.

And Haley Jones has got to up her game mentally and physically.  No stupid passes and bad shots; and when the ball is on the floor get after it!

Prechtel needs a good off-season of strength conditioning.

Finally, you gotta give it up to Ionescu and the Ducks tonight.  They were fabulous.  [But I am not giving up on the conference title just yet].

Agree with you Teejers about Jones.  I know she's only a frosh but she needs to get her game under control, or else she ends up the new Jenna Brown.  But you can see the upside.  She reminds me of Carrington, and Carrington developed her outside shot after her freshman year.

I actually thought Prechtel played the best of the 4 frosh.  Jump got yanked really quickly after turning around into Sabally for a silly charge.

Watching the first quarter it seemed Oregon, and particularly Ionescu, was playing somewhat tight.  Then Ionescu figured out she could score at will on us, forgot about trying to play for assists, and just let her talent roll over us.

We scored 7 pts in the 4th quarter, but unfortunately we could have scored 37 and it wouldn't have made a difference.

RE: WBB: Oregon 87 Stanford 55 - Baez87 - 01-17-2020

In the pregame talk before the Cal game, someone asked Tempie if we were ready to play at Oregon. Her response was a big knowing smile and a prophetic comment, "They don’t have the slightest idea what they are getting into." They started strong, then lost focus. It was hard to watch. Let’s hope they can bounce back and not be defined by this game.

Prechtel was the only who stopped Hebard. Hebard's misses were all or almost all with Prechtel guarding her and some of those misses were uncharacteristically ugly shots.

And she was 3/6 offensively in 15 minutes.  I thought she played well.  Her rebounding left something to be desired with only 1--and Belibi was no better.  I wonder why.

Prechtel is a big part of our future, with Fingall graduating, and I would not be surprised if she started to get a lot more minutes before this season is over.  Maybe sooner rather than later.  Tara really seemed to be trying to protect the freshmen last night, from the start.

Well, in early November I would never have guessed that come mid-January, our men's team would be the team undefeated in conference play, or that our women's team would have lost as many games as our men's team had, and by a worse margin in each of the losses....

I would not either.

Today the men's RPI is 28.  The women's RPI is 9.  So there is that.

I think the 28 RPI is much more surprising than the 9 RPI.

That may have been the best I've seen Oregon play defense- and Ionescu said that was the best they've played an overall game

RE: WBB: Oregon 87 Stanford 55 - martyup - 01-17-2020

The final score was disappointing, but we led after 1 and took the lead with a 7-0 run to start the 3rd.  This tells me the we have the ability and talent to beat OR.  In the final 15 minutes, they were on fire at home.  We made mistakes that cost us.  Mistakes can be corrected, lack of talent cannot.

I have to keep reminding myself how young this team is.  Except for Williams and Fingall, the majority of minutes went to two sophomores (one of whom missed chunks of her freshman season) and three freshman (Jones, Prechtel and Belibi).  This was our first true road game against a national championship contender team who had a packed stadium of fans.  What's disappointing is that we seemed quite poised for 2.5 quarters but then it all seemed to unravel.  I'm hoping this lights a fire under our team because there is so much talent there.

Forgot to add that the second half of this game is exactly why you need a senior year DiJonai Carrington.  And I think a junior year Maya Dodson would have been our best defender on Hebard.

We might still have lost with Carrington and Dodson playing, but I am convinced we would have been much more competitive down the stretch.  The defense would have been somewhat better.  But there were long stretches in the second half when we did not seem to be able to manufacture good looks at the basket, and there I think Carrington's fearless drives would have made a big difference.

But even if Carrington and Dodson were 100% healthy tomorrow, I doubt that they would be at there best for quite a long time to come.  Remember Lexie's experience last year.  Realistically, we need to be prepared not to have them the rest of the way, or not to have them at their best.
