A bit strange not on the bench more strange people didn’t see her post game. When Xu on the wvb team tore her ACL she also wasn’t on the bench but 10 minutes after the game she was on the floor with teammates family and friends
However Dodson wasn’t on the bench first two games in January
Optimistic is a strong word but hopeful yes Of course same could be said about Carrington and Dodson for a month or more now.

Yeah, I noted the NY Times quote because it wasn't a direct quote and as Teejers says, I haven't seen an indication of that anywhere else.
I am actually slightly more sanguine about her absence because typically with ACL/MCL injuries once it's torn, they're fine to walk around, and I remember Nadia actually being on the bench for at least one game before her surgery was scheduled. She was in a brace to prevent further damage, but she was able to be present.
My suspicion is that whatever her injury is, she has to keep her leg elevated and immobile, which is why she wasn't present during or after. I'm not sure what that says about her prognosis, but it does suggest to me it's something other than an ACL/MCL tear, where there isn't such a need. (Unless, of course, she had surgery for it already. If so, however, I wouldn't see any reason to withhold that information, because she'd obviously be out for the rest of the season.)

For any of us who have been feeling a bit down on our luck given all the injuries, the two losses, and tough prospects due the the end-loaded schedule, just think of what Notre Dame (and Marta) is going through. This has been up for a couple of weeks, but I just saw it:
https://twitter.com/AdamDerWSBT/status/1216508520532672514/video/1
Notre Dame is 1-2 since that tearful video, which was made after North Carolina State beat them by 34 points. On Sunday, Virginia beat them by 30.
Makes me appreciate the string of miracles that Tara achieves year after year without fail. Notre Dame is 7-13 and won't even make the tournament this year.
For anyone interested, Marta has started 19 games, plays 36 minutes, averages 3.6 ppg, has made only 2 treys all season, has 111 assists to 83 turnovers

Whew! How devastating. It must be hard for Marta, she probably had high hopes for her final collegiate year. And credit Tara for developing young players and integrating them into the lineup.

Marta knee the situation. One that ND lost all five starters to graduation and Two that Marta would play a lot.
And of course working on her Masters while on full scholarship
Congrats to her

Agree - think it's a good to great situation for Marta.
And also agree on McGraw - much respect for her passion . . . and caring!

Prior to that date McGraw had been throwing her players under the bus after each loss, including Marta when she was injured and missed 2 games. Nothing was her fault and even the ND board was upset with her. They thought she may need an intervention

Yeah, I saw some of her previous pressers after games and she was...not kind... to her players fairly often. I respect that she cares enough to tear up, but I also think it is not a good thing for a team when your coach cries about your losses and your prospects mid-season. They lost a game or some games, which is tough, but it's just sports.

Tara is often criticized for being low-charisma and extremely plain Jane in her demeanor vis-a-vis the more animated Mulkey, McGraw, and Auriemma, but one way I'm thankful for that is that you never see her taking her frustrations out on her players, and she's almost always very, very even-keeled. Some of Muffet's pressers in those demolition losses were hard to watch for how critical she was of her players. Never, ever seen that from Tara. The most she'll say is "X has to decide if she's committed/wants to play basketball/etc."

Arguably questioning a players commitment is the harshest criticism that one could level an athlete. I think Tara uses it very sparingly, and usually in context (like, I remember her saying something broadly to the effect with regard to Kristin Folkl's volleyball playing when asked why she wasn't starting).

Tara said something similar about Kailee Johnson although I think that may have been inbetween basketball seasons.

Yep. Those were the two I had in mind, and the only two times I can think of in recent memory when Tara was somewhat bluntly critical. Ultimately, I think she was proven correct in both cases...

Correct. After Washington beat us twice to knock us out of the Pac 12 and the NCAA tournies in spring of 2016, Tara gave a press conference in which she commented on ways each of her players could improve.
https://www.sfgate.com/collegesports/article/VanDerveer-will-have-loaded-team-next-season-7216231.php
Quote:She wants Thompson to pass more. “We need her to be unselfish and have a better turnover-to-assist ratio.” ... Kailee Johnson “has to make a decision about her relationship with basketball. She’s fairly skilled and very smart, but how important is basketball to Kailee? I think she could be a lot better.”
At the time I read those remarks I though Tara had come close to stepping over the line--those sound like things to be said privately, not publicly.
Lili and Kailee both left the team after Tara made those remarks--heading in to their senior years. As I recall Kailee graduated two quarters early and headed into real estate. Lili graduated on time and transferred to Notre Dame.
