Su Hong's in Menlo Park has been gone for quite a while.  Su Hong's in Palo Alto closed a few (6?) months back (another Chinese restaurant opened there - I haven't been so I can't comment on it).

Whoops, didn’t know that. Sorry to hear.

the Palo Alto version sort of lives on (I have not eaten at the new incarnation)

Quote:Hua Shi, who worked as a waiter at Su Hong Palo Alto three years ago, has since taken over the 3,300-square-foot restaurant. He reopened it last week as Su Zhe Eatery. A large "grand reopening" sign hangs outside the restaurant's windows.

Jose’s ..... That’s a name I haven’t thought of for a while.  Cuban empanadas and barbecue sauce pizza.

Yeah .... That was a fun spot in the day.

Yeah having Gotts right next door is too much of the same thing.  I liked it when Hobees was there.  That way, you could do a quicker bite at Kirk's before the game and a longer sit down meal at Hobees after while waiting for the traffic to clear.

I used to eat at La Morenita often (it was across the street from Whole Foods), but the owners retired and it closed a year or so ago. I haven't found a Mexican place I like as much since.

Kirk's has really upped their game in some ways. Remember the old California Ave. location with no deep fryer, so no fries or onion rings, and the rather faded and greasy decor. The current location has good fries, onion rings or strings, and generally a bigger menu. The burgers are a little inconsistent, though, depending (I guess) on who's cooking. Never bad, but sometimes tastier than others.

Service is whoever they can get. Usually just fine, though sometimes the cashier is underage and you have to wait for someone from the back to have a chance to come out and pour your beer. For a little while they had a cashier who perpetually needed a shower... Ugh.

Ha ha a double pineapple cheeseburger at Kirk's was the height of gourmet cuisine way back in the day at the old Calif Ave location.

They always had a lot of business and that grill had burgers on it all the time.

I remember those ladies who had to manage that brobdingnagian charcoal grill always had tons of Vaseline smeared on their faces to help ward off the heat.  Ugh what a job.  I wonder if OSHA even permits those kind of work conditions now.

Gott's Impossible Burger is useful when you have a vegetarian in the family, which is why I suggested it to CardCrimson.

We were regulars there. The food was always great. Really miss the place a lot. The celebration on the last night was bittersweet. We like Las Muchachas, but La Morenita was better.

First Gott's I went to was the Gott's just outside of St. Helena.  Thought it was extraordinary, or maybe it was just the halo effect from a Napa vacation.  Still eat at Gott's 4-5 times a year.

did you go there when it was Taylor's Refresher?

I didn't.  I think it was Gott's.  This was probably around 2011-2012.

You can still find a Hobee's at 4224 El Camino in Palo Alto.  Also, Redwood Shores, Mt. View, Cupertino, North San Jose and Sunnyvale.

Oh yeah, but those aren't walking distance from the stadium.

the new Zotts is insanely popular (no parking) and not cheap.  Worth the trip if you are sentimentally attached but a possible disappointment if you show up on a nice afternoon or warm evening and there is no parking.

a variety of cheap/good value eats in/near Palo Alto

- Oren's Hummus on University
- La Boheme on California
- Chef Chu's on El Camino at San Antonio
- Palo Alto Sol on California
- Zotts on Alpine
- Asian Box in Town & Country

What about Ann's Coffee Shop in downtown Menlo Park? Old school cafe. So old school, in fact, I'm shocked every time I go in that it's still around. They might even have biscuits and gravy, which I always thought was against the law in the Bay Area.

No, that's allowed.  It's foie gras that's illegal.
