I could be wrong, but I think this has nothing to do with the number of scholarships. Not with Russell making $88 million in 2020 alone.
I recall somewhere that there is a limit on the number of players who are able to travel regardless of how many are on the team. If my memory serves, only 15 players can travel to away games on trips regardless of how much money is available for a player to pay their own way.
We can, sadly, count on one of 16 players being injured at any given moment in time, and if a miracle happened and all were healthy, those least likely to play could alternate on the road trips.
We had 16 on this roster:
https://gostanford.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/2013-14
We were going to carry Ruef as a 16th non scholarship player on that team. I seem to remember she wound up getting a scholarship after all, but clearly having a 16th non scholarship player, like Wilson could be, is feasible.
Ruef was so eager to return that she decided to be on the team, while she was in a masters program in engineering, even tho there was no scholarship. Then Toni Kokenis decided that her concussion situation was too severe for her to play and she gave up her scholarship after the season began (or maybe it was after practice had begun -- can't remember, but it was after the school year had begun). That was the scholarship that Ruel was given.

Thanks! I thought it was something like that.
The point I wanted to make is that Tara was fully prepared to go into that season with 16 on the roster, with a walk-on expected to play. No reason the same should not be true for next year. That is why I doubt the Carrington thing is related to the number of scholarships, the order of the ask for a redshirt, etc.

Thanks, Bob for the precise date. I thought I'd remembered it as after the school year began, but this clarifies. Still, it definitely was the case that Ruef had decided to go for it as a non-scholarship player before she got the WBB scholarship that Kokenis gave up. We can always rely on you to have the precise facts. Very grateful for that!!

My mistake. Was thinking of JJ Hones.
BTW, was it Jamie Carrey who was DQed from Stanford hoops due to concussions, but then went on to play for Texas (and then in WNBA)?

Yes, definitely Jamie Carey, went on to play at Texas after several years of Stanford docs not clearing her.

There used to be a story online with interview comments from Jamie Carey about how she continued to have post-concussion symptoms at Texas and even in the WNBA. So I don't think anyone can say the Stanford doctors were wrong not to clear her. But we can surely respect her choice to take the risk of playing anyway.

The ones I really respect here are the Stanford docs.

Finally getting around to post my thoughts here.
I hope DiJonai doesn't leave but if she does, I'm going to miss her a lot.
She was my favorite player on this team. She had a lot of intangibles like Sabrina Ionescu and Mikayla Pivec,
but much more athletic and physical, that enabled her to be a great rebounder, surprisingly at 5'11" and able to drive and score around the basket as well as defend. If she had not been injured I think she could have played a much more significant role and become one of our all-time greats.

FWLIW, I heard via third-hand hearsay that Carrington was told there would not be a scholie available for her for next season; thus, the portal.
If true, that puts some theories bandied about in these parts into question.

That would comport with the bad feeling I was getting when Carrington no longer seemed to be wearing a brace of any kind but was nevertheless in jeans and not dressed for games. I suspect at some point mid-season she realized she'd rather preserve her eligibility than squander a year on our remaining handful of games.
Given how the season ended, I can't imagine she's disappointed by her decision. It does suck, however, because she got so much less than the proper send-off she deserved.

How does that square with Tara's public statement that "we would like to have them [both] back"? Would Tara have said such a thing if Carrington had to pay her own way?
I can see academic reasons as the most plausible explanation, if not that then perhaps a falling out with Tara if she was medically cleared this year and refused to play, and only last would I think it came down (simply) to not enough scholarships.
Let's hope all these reasons are wrong and she decides, after testing the waters, to stay. Slim chance perhaps, but I will still hope. She could have an astounding season with us next year, if fully healthy.
I guess there is a fourth possibility, and it is not one I like to think about. Perhaps Tara thinks that Carrington is now so injury prone that it would not be in her interest to keep playing. Sort of like Jamie Carey only not concussions.

With Moschkau graduating in three years and doing a graduate transfer, that should "theoretically" free up an extra scholarship so that Wilson and Carrington could both come back.
If my prior theory is correct, it won't make a difference. I really hope I am wrong.

I do hope you’re wrong too... it was posted that D announced only 2 of her 3 choices so I hope the 3rd is that she’s staying now that there will be a scholarship available... and there has to be a basketball season next season... no tournament was already such a bummer...
