That story makes it really simple. There was no ambiguity about what happened with person in truck cab video recording the incident and posting it on Snapchat. That takes the whole "was it a crime or not" issue off the table for whoever did the recording and posting vis-a-vis any college admissions panel.

If Stanford has values it won't compromise on, denying admission to a kid who did what Hector now clearly did certainly can't be faulted.  That said, everyone makes mistakes. If Hector told the truth, showed contrition about his involvement, and made some commitments to take a leading role agains the kind of behavior he engaged in, Stanford could still let him in. If he didn't tell the truth or show contrition to Stanford admissions, that would reveal something a little more distasteful about Hector's character and justify denying him admission.

I hope Hector was denied admission for not telling the truth or taking responsibility, and not simply because he made a really bad error in judgment when a teenager and ultimately took responsibility for his unfortunate behavior.

i don't see any indication that he showed contrition. quite the contrary: he continues to blame the girl. nor has he taken any responsibility whatsoever; instead he feels sorry for himself.

also in the story, none of the 4 players allowed themselves to be interviewed by police. how on earth did the school allow them to continue to play without cooperating with the investigation? and how did the 18-year-old player get away with refusing a police interview? one starts to see details of why the girl wants the investigation report released

Looks like Cal's #1 2020 commit was in the truck bed with the girl. No word yet on his future with Cal, but I can't imagine there is going to be one.

The more I learn about this incident, the more obvious it is Stanford did the right thing with Hector. I sincerely hope he apologizes to the girl, her parents, and also the teachers who wrote "glowing" letters of recommendation on his behalf.  They must feel like chumps. Oh, and he should also apologize to the U.S. Army for taking Army All-American honors without disclosing what he did.

Bottom line - we have no idea what happened. Speculation on these things is always “dangerous”.  Obviously Stanford felt there was enough there to revoke.  Fine. But are there any of you that know what happened and what Hector did or didn’t do ?

Yes we do. Did you read the article? Brackets include knowledge we now have.

"It’s undisputed, based on a KING 5 review of hundreds of pages of law enforcement records, that four high school football stars [INCLUDING A CAL AND UW COMMIT] took turns having sex with the girl in the open-air bed of a pickup truck as it drove through the wealthy Bellevue suburbs of Hunts Point and Medina.

Two other teenagers, including another Eastside Catholic standout player [HECTOR], watched from inside the cab, according to investigative files. At least one player took video of the events that night and sent them out over the popular app, Snapchat, according to police records and KING 5 interviews with students who said they received and watched the video clips. "

Unless they felt so much remorse that they were looking to serve time to atone for what they'd done, it would be insane for those players to grant the police an interview.

but then does the school get to say, we're not investigating on our own, we're leaving it to the police, you can keep playing football?
pretty sure stanford won't let you keep playing if you refuse to cooperate in a police investigation.

I remember when my son received his recruiting letter. Applicable portion reads "as long as you maintain excellent personal and academic standards..."

I talked with the coach and the AAD, who said the same thing.  Keep your grades up.  Don't take weak classes your spring semester / senior year.  Don't do anything you wouldn't tell your parents about.

Quote:“If you succeed in getting colleges to revoke scholarships and thus prevent one or more of these boys from pursuing a professional career,” attorney James E. Lobsenz of Carney Badley Spellman, P.S., wrote Aug. 29, 2018, to the girl’s parents, adding that could amount to damages that “could easily be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars per child, and given the value of a professional career… could be millions of dollars per child.”

“No one raped your daughter,” he added.

The temerity.

Quote:Lara Hruska, a lawyer representing the players and parents, said in an email to The Times Friday, “While the records ultimately do exonerate our clients, release of them will not quell the public obsession with this private encounter between minors.

They certainly have a right to block release of the records given that most were minors and there was no prosecution.  But I'd kind of want to review the records in order to determine for myself whether they exonerate the lawyer's clients.

One other tidbit from the article:

Quote:Stanford last month had filed its own records request after being tipped off anonymously in February by email about the case.

If Stanford was tipped off in February and that was the first time they heard about it, that means presumably Hector did not disclose anything about this in his application.

Last comment.  Since Hector never became a Stanford player, should we change the title to "Former Stanford commit's family..."

Well, non-disclosure by Hector is certainly one plausible theory on what happened.  It's also possible that he disclosed something of the incident to the coach(es) recruiting him. Indeed, given how widely known this incident was up in WA, it's hard to believe the coaches were completely unaware of the situation.  Of course, Hector may have been less than forthcoming verbally with the coaches.

Not sure we'll ever get resolution on that aspect of this.

Since even the thread title now acknowledges that this 18-year-old no longer has any affiliation with Stanford, is there any reason we need to keep discussing this? We know nothing about what he told Stanford nor what Stanford learned and when, so I'm not really sure this game is worth the candle.
