Mick's vague non-public aspersions notwithstanding, I did not find Whitmer to come off like an idiot in this interview, and she seemed more than measured in responding to questions about how Trump has treated her and in calling for cooperation between the states and the federal government.

And at a minimum, Mick, if you think think she's an idiot, I can't imagine what you must think of the guy running the daily national press briefings. At least she knows how to finish a sentence.

I think they're both great at getting elected. And don't you find it remotely interesting that Whitmer doesn't mention her brief employment between law school and running for office at age 29? It's not on her bio, it's not even on her official Wikipedia page. Nor does she mention her brief return to said employment when she term-limited out? The fact that she couldn't get into UM even though her father was a lawyer and one of the most connected people in the state, should tell you something.

I have personal experience with her. We worked for the same organization. I suspect you've never met her. I won't comment further.

Just curious, what do you think of Rick Snyder (Whitmer's predecessor, the "tough nerd"). When first elected, he appeared to have the right kind of mix of technocratic competence to be an effective governor (or at least, that's how he portrayed himself). And then he appeared to have completely botched the Flint water crisis.

This site says she worked as an associate attorney from 1998-2000 at Dickinson Wright. This article suggests she returned there briefly in 2015. Here's more on her career trajectory out of undergrad, from the Detroit Free Press early in her candidacy for Governor:

"I grew up going to football games with my dad and we were just sports fanatics," she said. "I love sports and I thought there were so few women who were in sports broadcasting."
But while getting a bachelor's degree in communications at Michigan State University, she did an internship with state Rep. Curtis Hertel, D-Detroit, when the House of Representatives was split 55-55 between Democrats and Republicans.
"It changed everything for me," she said. "I saw how important it was that we all have a voice during the debates."
So instead of using her degree to get a job at a local television station and maybe work her way up to ESPN, Whitmer went to MSU's law school and got a law degree.
"I got some really good advice when a friend said there are so few people who actually make it on air. And bringing a legal degree allows you to bring something more to the table," Whitmer said. "But I loved law school and never looked back."
Right out of law school, she got a job with the Dickinson Wright law firm in Lansing, working on cases dealing with the regulation of utilities as well as doing some legal work for the Funeral Director's Association. It wasn't exactly exciting work, but it led her back to what really sparked her interest: public service.

More like she didn't understand that 4 Republican justices would join Republican legislators to kneecap state pandemic response. The court was split 4-3 on partisan lines.

Thanks DenverCard! Your kind words are much, much appreciated. After a mid-pandemic cross-country move for a new (more than full-time) job, unfortunately my boss passed after some (non-COVID-19) health complications, so it's been quite a stretch. I do try to keep up with reading as much Cardboard as possible, but with the US COVID-19 response in a pathetic holding pattern and still no Stanford sports, have been pretty content to lurk.

I've always thought the 'well regulated militia' language in the Second Amendment was the open sesame to sensible gun regulation.

yes, that's the clause that is ignored by those who believe the Second Amendment bans all gun regulation. The NY Times article is debunking the concept that apparently some militia members have that the mention of militias in the Amendment means they are OK or even constitutionally protected. Another example of my point in an earlier thread that some people interpret the constitution as meaning what they want it to mean.
