I recognize we are straying from the topic at hand, but we are talking about the geopolitical consequences of the pandemic, which does strike me as relevant.

I came up with a good compromise on nomenclature that I have been spreading (pun intended). (BTW I'm 15/16 genetically Han Chinese). I've been calling it the Gong Fei Virus. Gong Fei is a slur that families on our losing side of the Chinese Civil War used to refer to the Communist Chinese. It literally means "Communist Bandit". It's more insulting than its literal translation.
This works because when you explain it, people learn who is actually responsible and distinguishes various ethnic Chinese and other Asian people from those that are culpable.

I have never objected to blaming the Chinese Communist Party for missteps early in the response to coronavirus.
I have only objected to using blaming the CCP in order to absolve the Trump administration from its duty to prepare for COVID-19, which it flubbed.

Well, the CCP is the definition of a bully, and groups like the NBA knuckled under before them. Trump can't stand them, they ruined his economic miracle and Trump irritated the hell out of them. Republican senators are trying to hold China accountable. They're basically saying they're untouchable. And given that they make most of what we have, that's probably not incorrect.

Probably true.
I have seen that the more hawkish elements of the CCP hope that Trump wins re-election, because it strengthens their case that the US in an adversary that they will need to build up defensively.

Folks, get over it. Countries have been attempting to "meddle" in the elections of other nations as long as elections have existed. The US regularly attempts to influence who wins in many foreign elections. It is probably true that in the past it was more obvious, and therefore more attributable, but it has gone on forever. Who here thinks the VOA, the BBC, and Radio Moscow didn't try to sway voters in other nations elections? The term "useful idiots" was not invented to describe PAC-12 refs.

There's interfering and there's INTERFERING.
The BBC reporting on a President's foibles may be bad form but actively trying to hijack vote counting or funding astroturf organizations to foment dissent around a national tragedy like Covid-19 is criminal. AND should be treated as such even if they are doing it to support a personally favored candidate.

I'm pretty sure the VOA didn't try to hide its identity in its broadcasts; if they did I think their name would give it away anyway. I'd have less problem with the Russian hacking of our social media if they clearly identified themselves in each hack or posting as the KGB hacker squad. But that would decrease their effectiveness in exacerbating divisions and contributing to the devaluation of facts and the truth. Besides, we have enough Americans who already do a good job of that all by themselves, we don't need foreign help in that department.
