At the risk of violating Terry's rule, let me say "ha ha ha".  Cheney has about as much influence over the Republican party as I do.

Very true...

I just think it needs to come from athletes and entertainers. Country singers, rappers, grunge rockers (is that still a category). Models.  Race car drivers. LeBron James, Stephan, Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, Ronaldo,  Tom Brady, Tiger, Serena,  MadBum (what can I say I’m a Giants fan), pick your entertainers.

Full court press from pop culture. Much more likely to get a response.

That’s a great commercial for atheism.

It's not all that alternative.

I'm so cynical about the media that I'm pretty well convinced that if Trump had (improbably, but not impossibly) come down on the side of social distancing, the New York Times would be running a series of op-eds commenting gravely on the damage to the economy, doing interviews on the plight of the unemployed, etc.

RE: Anti-mask crowd obliterated in one tweet - BostonCard - 06-26-2020

Nah.  Call me naive, but there was no reason this had to be partisan.  I think we all could have done with a dose of “country comes together to fight scourge of the 21st century”.  In fact, I thought that’s where we were headed early on.  But here we are.

Right. Literally in the middle of the impeachment proceedings all of the Democrats in Congress, along with the media, would have said, “We have to put all this aside and listen to what the President says so we can all come together.” There isn’t even an alternative universe out there that would entertain that fantasy.

In any event, you can now tell that Summer has officially arrived, because it’s rerun season: this thread has already been run at least once, if not multiple times.

RE: Anti-mask crowd obliterated in one tweet - BostonCard - 06-26-2020

Congress has passed four coronavirus related bills in a bipartisan fashion.  Trump could have asked for virtually anything to combat the coronavirus and probably gotten some version of it.  Sometimes existential threats can concentrate the minds and be a source of unity and I legitimately thought that the prospect of hundreds of thousands of Americans dying might be just the thing that would get us over the mutual antagonism between Trump and Democrats.

Pearl Harbor was the galvanizing impetus for the US to unify and sacrifice in WWII. Would the current generation of Americans have responded the same if faced with the same situation now, or would they insist on putting themselves above the country?

All of these analogies to WWII strike me as rather silly.  The enemies in WWII were foreign (except, of course, for the persons that everyone unified to put in interment camps). The enemies in the current COVID-19 situation— at least the enemies perceived by most of the folks on this Board, as far as I can tell from the language and names used to describe them — are other Americans who aren’t doing all the things that folks on the Board think they should be doing.

And by close-minded, demon-hating enemies of Republicans, you mean Dick Cheney?  #realmenwearmasks (Liz Cheney’s hashtag)

My cynicism about the media has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with my actual experiences with the media since my first interview in 1982.  Most of the time, in my experience there is more than a grain of truth but less than full candor and honesty in the articles in which I've been personally involved.  I've run or supervised media relations for three decades, exclusively with business and legal reporters.  Most of the time, they're directionally correct.  Frequently, they are biased and one-sided, and that's with evaluating issues that can be assessed through empirical data.  That doesn't even count the fact that if you're selecting what's included in a publication, you're exerting control over the story.  I can only imagine how bad it is in the political sphere.

Nope.  The "enemy" is the virus and always has been.  But forgive us if we think that some people may not have been doing everything they could to defeat the enemy.

I too thought we would have a nice unifying theme, the small silver lining in this cloud.

Trump could have done that, as his tweets give him the bully pulpit. However, the media would have opposed him every step of the way. They've been promoting Trump the Demon for three years. Trump could have, and should have, risen above. But some rising was required. The NYT was never in good faith.

Recent poll results on mask usage and observation.

https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2020/06/23/most-americans-say-they-regularly-wore-a-mask-in-stores-in-the-past-month-fewer-see-others-doing-it/

I think it conforms to what most have read/ thought on this board.

Majority of people wear or often wear a mask.   Older more likely than younger.   Dem leaning more likely than GOP leaning.

Also education and racial breakdowns.

Mitch gets religion about masks

Pence too

Inconsistent messaging about this hasn’t helped (and you can rightly blame the cdc and who for being late to the bandwagon).  But if I were a Republican looking to reopen the economy, I would be all in on masks, as a way to do so as safely as possible.

As with all polls that ask people if they do what is generally considered a positive and then ask  if they see others doing that positive thing, the responses have to be taken with a grain of salt.  People will see themselves doing the positive more and others doing it less. Human nature.

Yes on both.  I think you can add the WHO to the mix.

Generally it went this:  At first -  it doesn’t help, then, it might help, then jeez, it really looks like it helps, IT HELPS WEAR  IT”

I wonder how different it would’ve been from the get go if  they simply said wearing a mask helps not only in avoiding the spread to someone else; but gives you some added protection as well. May not be completely true but so what. Nothing like enlightened self interest.

Speaking of which how bout this:  “Hey SEC football fans, you want the chance to see a football game this year?  If so, wear a mask!”

This is at least the second time you have made anti-religious comments.  And your comment has nothing to do with COVID.

I did call out the WHO, but didn’t capitalize, so it looked like a generic “who”.

Trump's press secretary was asked today "Is President Trump disappointed that the South lost the Civil War?"  Truly, the Golden Age of the Media.
