This team, by far, is the deepest Cardinal squad ever.
All 3 frosh can play at the college level. It took exactly 1 game to make that determination.
That was a comprehensive W by the Cardinal against an undermanned team. Will be interesting to see Cal Poly down the road at full strength - 6 players, even freshman (some might say especially frosh) is a pretty big deal. It obviously would not have changed outcome, but I have a suspicion that Cal Poly will do better this season than last. In short, they have some players - it's just that Stanford was awesome today, Q2-Q4. About the only sub-standard aspect of Stanford's game today was from the stripe.
I know many question the wisdom/point of playing college hoops now amid pandemic, but I enjoyed the heck out of that game (and hope to do the same on Sunday). And I'm equally excited to see the men play their opener.

Agnes Emma-Nnopu showing quickness and desire to crash the boards. Seems like a tweener in terms of skill set, but when her perimeter game improves, she could be a strong contributor.
Jana flashing some nice passing skills, including a beautiful lead to Hannah on the break for a layup.
Strange to see Jerome enter the game for the first time in the third quarter. Presumably no injury issues. I prefer not to speculate, but this timing has a whiff of something like a team violation.
Cam continuing to look comfortable.
I kind of feel that Jerome may have just been surpassed in talent, to be honest. The sophomores all like like they were very solid, and Tara has said so a few times this year. And then Brink looks great. So, I just think Jerome perhaps dropped down the pecking order a bit. I think the others who played more are just a bit more dynamic.
Agree re Jerome. She will be needed when inevitable injuries, etc. occur. This team is deeper than any in last 5 years.
Agnes a revelation, Brink omg, and Van G much better than I expected....very quick hands, ok quickness, great vision and nice shot.

I miss DiJonai but Agnes may make it much more tolerable. She was everywhere and capable of doing everything including being a spark plug.

As much as I like Jerome, I agree. Jerome would be a good player for many other teams. She seems to work hard, mostly keeps her head in the game, but just isn't as athletic. She's going to be a good sub in case our other bigs are getting pushed around or getting into foul trouble.
The freshman are all new, and played amazingly well. I had no expectations one way or the other on them.
I was impressed with Hannah. She's doing much more than just launching 3s. I like her on defense too.
Now, a question. Why did it take so long to take control of the game? Why didn't Stanford pick them apart from the beginning? A slow start could be deciding in a close match.

brink: 17 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist in 17 minutes. i saw her block at least 3 shots, but they are crediting her with zero blocks (i think they gave hers to prechtel - all tall women look alike?).

Nice game. Loved Jana’s ability as the Point. She reminded me a bit of Widman and Flores. That’s high praise
I didn’t even notice Kate not on the bench but in the stands. She was tested this am. Best to her hope it’s negative

Wow. What a great way to open the season. Last year the team had problems scoring, especially when Jones was injured. And we never crossed the 100-point mark the entire season. This year we score 108 in our very first game! These are the kinds of blowout games that national title contenders have, similar to what we saw from Oregon and South Carolina last year.
Here are some thoughts on individual play:
Hayley Jones - She is clearly the best player on the team. She knows she has to lead the team on offense and she rose to the challenge. She is so smooth and strong when driving to the basket. Seems like Tara likes Jones in the 4-spot vs the 3-spot. I think the idea is to exploit the speed matchup Jones is likely to have vs a PF and have Jones drive around her player for a layup.
Kiana Williams and Lexie Hull - Lexie was the leading scorer with 19. Combined with Williams to score 64% from 3. Love that Williams only played 26 minutes. Last year she had to stay on the floor all the time and we need her fresher at the end of games.
Hannah Jump - Looks like her fitness has improved a lot. Last year she was only a 3-point shooter. This year she is sprinting down the court in transition for layups
Jana Van Gytenbeek - Great vision. Both in transition and in the half court. But you also need to score as a PG and her 3-point shot looked really good.
Emma-Nnopu - May be the forgotten member of the freshman class. But Tara will certainly take notice of her 5 offensive rebounds in only 15 minutes of game time.
Cameron Brink - She looked nervous in her first few minutes of play. But once she settled in, she was very very good. We had heard about her defensive skills and her great timing as a shot blocker. BUT, she was so much quicker on offense than I expected. Her drives from the high post to the basket reminded me of Satou Sabally from Oregon

Agree re Wideman and Flores, but also reminded me of Susan King Borchard. Quick, agile, and really smart, as well as capable of scoring. It gives me confidence for the future, a tremendous back up to Kiana and Anna. So good to have the depth at PG.
This game was so great to see -- absolutely everyone did something good, even great. Yes, Jerome is likely to be getting less playing time in the future, given what we saw from the other bigs today. But she'll be there to contribute when needed. I was so, so impressed -- and excited about the frosh in particular. All three will be contributing a lot. Yes, expected a lot from Brink, and she delivers -- gives Stanford a dimension that it has not had in years. I expected that Jana was going to be good, and she's better than that. But the best reveal for me was Agnes. I'd read good things about her, but most was still, well, we got another Aussie. She's going to be amazing. Strikes me as a sort of Carrington type, plays far bigger than her size, strong, aggressive and unafraid. I really liked what I saw.

Thought the announcers were fine, and they pointed out what I have long-believed is the hallmark of an excellent team (and an excellently coached one): post-to-post passing for easy looks. The Collins twins on the men's side were terrific at this; and the handful of post-to-post passes for point blank looks this afternoon was really encouraging.
The other thing about the frosh perimeter players: they are strong and not in much need of a college S&C program (though I'm sure they'll benefit some from that). Brink will definitely benefit from a bit more S&C, which is kind of a scary (good) thought for Stanford fans. The point is: all the frosh can be expected to contribute in meaningful ways
this season. And it took all of about 5 minutes of watching each of them on the court to reach this conclusion. The program is in excellent shape right now (knock on wood re: injuries).

Not much else I can add to what has been said. Everyone, and I mean everyone, looked great. Definitely improvement by the sophs, especially Jump, who looked significantly quicker. Lexie Hull quietly had a great game. Jones is such a pleasure to watch. She can do it all. Williams was her wonderful self, did not need to do much in this one. I won't go down the list but can't think of a negative about anyone overall, really.
Loved the frosh. Cal Poly was way overmatched but I think it was more how good and deep we are than that they are that bad. They had some size inside and some talent. Emma-Nnopu was the big mystery to me, and I thought she did great. Plays very hard, rebounds very well, defends well, and showed a nice shot on that three she made. With such a deep team it may be hard for her to get the minutes she will probably deserve, but she can play. Loved Van Gytenbeek's passing and overall game. Another who can shoot. Brink was excellent after a few minutes to get settled. She has a lot of upside too. She could be even stronger with the ball when rebounding, etc. She definitely moves very well for her size and has good moves inside.
One thing is very clear - this team can pass. There were so many really good passes from all over - the guards did their share but the others did well too. When Cal Poly played zone we had no trouble finding good shots, and that was because people were aggressive, got into the lane and passed well, drove well, etc.
I am not thrilled to be playing college sports with the pandemic as it is, but if they are going to play, I am glad we got a game in and it went so well.

What a superb way to start a season.
All the caveats are warranted: we probably won't know just how good our team is until they play UCLA on Dec 21, if that game comes off, or the Arizona/ASU swing on Jan 1 and Jan 3. If we actually play all the games on the schedule, we will have a better idea of whether this team is merely excellent or whether it will be one of those truly dominant teams in Stanford WBB history. If we easily handle UCLA and Arizona then we can all be true believers in a possible national championship run. But that is still a long ways away....
But this much is clear: Cameron Brink can start for this team. Hailey Jones is fully recovered from her injury. Lexie and Williams are as good as ever. With Jump we have our deadly sniper who has now added to her offense to the point that she may become iindefensible. We also have our point guard of the future for much needed relief for Williams, Williams ran down like a spinning top too many times last season, and now she will have quality relief. And behind today's four double digit scorers we have excellent depth and experience.
I think the three freshmen were revelations.
Brink played much better than Nneka or Chiney or Jayne or Kayla in their first games. I did not expect her to be so polished so fast.
Van Gytenbeek. Wow. She reminded me so much of Courtney Vandersloot. In her first game! So rare to have such precise passing skill, such court awareness, and a legitimate three point threat all in the same package.
Emma Nnopu. Seven rebounds in 15 minutes, including 5 O-boards. She does seem to have that Carrington-esque aggression around the ball. And good shooting too!
The team seemed to play with confidence and joy from late in the first quarter on--shaking off the rust and then it was cruise control the rest of the way. Cruising with the killer instinct, that is.
The next 5 weeks will tell us most of what we need to know. Whether this level of play can be sustained, whether our team can stay healthy during the worse depths of the pandemic, whether the season gets cancelled due to everyone else falling sick. If we keep playing like this when facing bigger, stronger, more skillful teams, and if we and they can stay healthy, then the sky is truly the limit.

Some game stats:
We shot 72 times and hit 38 (52.8%)
From 3 point range we shot 30 times and dropped 14 (46.7%).
Free throws need improvement with 18 for 31 (58.1%).
Jones had a double double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
We had 10 steals and 6 blocked shots.
We had 5 players in double digits scoring.
We had 56 bench points and 44 points in the paint, while Cal Poly only scored 40 points for the game.
If anyone knows of a replay of this game, please post.

First off, it's great to have college basketball again after the year we've had
I know the rest of the season is still very much up in the air, given the worsening COVID situation in the country, but I hope that it stabilizes to the degree that we can complete a season and send Kiana, Anna and Alyssa off on our last deep postseason run.
I agree with the sentiment from this game. We've overmatched Cal Poly in pretty much every facet so it was hard to truly gauge how ready the team is until we play a tough opponent, but for a first game, it was a joy to watch.
I think the depth and quality of this team will make Kiana an even better and more consistent player. I felt that she was pressing too often last season with Haley and DiJonai being out to create something and be the go-to player in every clutch situation, resulting in some ugly shooting nights. Haley showed that she can effectively share the mantle.
Regarding Cameron, we didn't see too much of her shooting prowess today, but we all know her family connections with the Currys, if even some of their talent has rubbed off on her, given the impressive collegiate debut she had, she and Haley will make a formidable, (dare I say it -- All-American) duo for the next three years.
Van Gytenbeek's passing skills was very impressive, finding the open player down the court and not hesitating to make those decisions. Coupled with the ability and desire to hit jumpers (unlike some other PGs we had in recent memory), it will definitely soften the loss after this year from Kiana's graduation.
Emma's debut was exactly what I felt like she would be as a player. The hustle and grit from the get-go, she might not put up brobdingnagian numbers, but I think she's going to be the indispensible player who's exactly where you need her to be, making the big play, going after the loose rebound, that helps you win not only games, but championships.
I agree that Hannah will be an absolute thorn in opposing defenses to game plan for, if she develops the game we saw today. If she can show what she did today on a consistent basis, defenders can't just cheat on the 3-point line against her, which will make her shooting just that more potent.
I was just thinking it is an embarrassment of riches on how deep the team is. The lineup that we fielded in the fourth quarter would be competitive against most teams in the country.

I was really impressed with Brink's game, but I'm not convinced she's better than Prechtel. Brink looks "smoother" but Prechtel has great skills, too, and is (or appears to be, anyway) a bit stronger. Will be interesting to see how Stanford responds to some bigs who can bang a bit and have their own skills.
Regardless, a great set of posts for Coach Tara to work in and out of the lineups.
Again, really fun to watch this team play (and share the ball).

There is something I liked about Cameron Brink with a little more than five minutes in the game. After she grabbed an offensive rebound she started forcefully throwing her elbows around to get out of the grasp of an opposing player.
My only question about Cameron at the moment is if she is tough enough as an 18 year old to play under the basket at the college level. Otherwise, she clearly has the skills.
