The men's team, at least, while they were in NC, got a lot of their high priority personal items (like contacts) shipped out to them.  Still probably couldn't get everything they wanted.

I can imagine and fear this will not end well.

At some point in here the hotel thing will get tired.   There will be a strong desire to return to something that is home.   To enjoy your food, your bed, your weight room, your car or bike, etc.   It could be OK as long as the teams are winning, but it may be very hard to pull out of a slump as an individual or as a team.   At least your average D1 player is mentally prepared to spend quite a bit of time in hotels, but I suspect at the end we will realize Stanford teams lost more contests than expected.

I also wonder how the other sports will be able to prepare for their upcoming seasons with the existing restrictions.

I watched the replay(what else is doing?). You learn so much from replays that you might miss when caught up in the emotion of the game.
Here are a few random observations:
1.We missed a ton of bunnies and I noticed that on many (most?) of these our shooter seemed to lose sight of the basket, i.e., under the basket.
2.Anna Wilson is my Star of the Game. What a tremendous complement to this scrappy bunch.
3.Lacie is good too! Very good.
4.Haley Jones has hops!
5.Fran and Onyenwere are both 6' Bigs and their games are similar in many respects. By her senior year Fran will be better than O.

HURRAH!  So relieved about Williams.

On the other mystery about why UCLA's Aussies can't be here, the restriction applies only to new students and only to students coming to a campus that is entirely online.  Some universities--and I presume Stanford among them--have kept a minuscule number of  in-person classes they can send their foreign students to (they only need one in each student's schedule) so as to evade the restriction.

Apparently UCLA would not play the evasion game and its frosh from out of country are stuck at home.

The new policy reasons is predicated on the assumption that there is no need for a foreign student to journey to the US to attend college if everything is online.  (And I have had some foreign students in my classes--the one from Japan had to stay up to 1am every day to be in my synchronous course.)

Now, if you want to know the reason for this terrible policy, I would have to get into politics, which is not appropriate for this board.  I think the policy is terrible, and the more you know about it the worse it seems.

I must be totally missing something because that seems reasonable.

Not sure what to make of Kiana's injury. Yes, maybe she was just shaken up and, as Tara said, she will be okay. Still I always feel left in the dark when I listen to coach’s talk about player’s injuries.
Perhaps this is not only the time to wish her well, but also to acknowledge that we are seeing far more than spunk when she takes the floor. Many of us probably know that Kiana brought a lot of toughness to Stanford by participating in the competitive Texas HS basketball scene and by following two successful family members into collegiate athletics.
What might not be as widely known, though, is how successful she was as a student. In high school, Kiana graduated summa cum laude, was a three-time National Honor Society member, and once received Spanish National Honor Society recognition. It’s always a joy to see her infectious enthusiastic on the court, her sometimes skippy lightheartedness, and her willingness to give it all out there on the court. It’s easy to marvel at her skill as a tactician and a floor general, but let’s also acknowledge her as a complete person who will proudly carry her significant skills and determination into the world.

RE: WBB: Stanford 61 UCLA 49 - Griffins78 - 12-21-2020

Finally getting a chance to watch the game.

What I'm noticing and mad about is how dirty UCLA played. Constantly, they were undercutting, pushing, shoving our players. Using our players momentum as they were jumping or moving under the basket - many times it was dangerous. And the referees never called them. Same with picks - they frequently gave a hip check and didn't get called.

We were aggressive, moving constantly, rebounding with passion. This team cuts to the basket better than any team I can recall. Not just back cuts or plays - but constantly. We move so fluidly.

Fran is moving so well and attacking. Cameron is now playing aggressively and confidently. She is so quick and anticipates and is a great passer.

I haven't re-read the SCC travel-based quarantine rules with this in mind, but based on my memory, I think the quarantine only applies if you spend the night in SCC.  It may be that the team could fly (or bus) into SCC, visit their dorm rooms to get whatever they need,  and then bus to a non-SCC location for the night.

Indeed, from what I remember, if they stayed in a Menlo Park hotel, they might be able to be on campus during the day.  I don't think they could practice at Stanford though.
--------------

It continues to bother me to see people (for instance, the UCLA WBB coach, but I've seen Stanford WBB assistants & players do it) pull down their mask to yell.  That's a lot of droplets & aerosol being emitted into the air unabated.  Using the small cone as a megaphone as Tara does is very much safer.

---------------

I would imagine being away so long is tougher on coaches, with family or an empty house, pets, bills & taxes, and such to deal with than students.  I imagine they have a lot more stuff (game films, data on prospects, ...) that they need to get sent to them.   I kinda expect the players to bond even more strongly than normal from the travel.

RE: WBB: Stanford 61 UCLA 49 - BobK - 12-22-2020

Tara does not use the small cone during games. It’s illegal.

I thought it was just mic'ing it up that was illegal and the cone itself was fine.

Small cones suck Bobbbbb. At the old Bud’s on Castro and 24th in the City you could get a giant sugar cone packed with enough ice cream to drown a rowboat.

I've seen her use it in games, but not PAC-12 games (that I recall).   I just searched through the rules for "mega", "amplif", "noise", "electr", and found no rule that prohibits non-electronic megaphones (of any size).  I would expect it to be under "Bench technical fouls", if anywhere.

Can you point to the rule or interpretation that makes it illegal?

If I were her, I'd consider getting two 12" long megaphones, using one, and provide the other to the opposing coach.

RE: WBB: Stanford 61 UCLA 49 - BobK - 12-22-2020

Per Tara on the zoom or interview. I figured she knew

RE: WBB: Stanford 61 UCLA 49 - M T - 12-22-2020

Maybe someone will suggest they check the rules, or ask the head ref.   I sure don't see it in the rules.

Anyone have any theories why Stanford didn't press?
Maybe the idea is that up-tempo offense is more effective.  But we didn't seem to tire them out too much, or get them in foul trouble.

RE: WBB: Stanford 61 UCLA 49 - CompSci87 - 12-22-2020

I thought Tara said the electronic microphone she uses during practice is illegal during games, so she used the little non-electronic megaphone ("cone") instead. But maybe that changed since I heard it. Could be that someone found a rule forbidding that too. Is she not using it anymore?

I remember hearing some rule about megaphones during volleyball. One year the Texas cheerleaders were using one in an extremely obnoxious manner, yelling at the Stanford player who was back to serve instead of at their fans in the crowd. The story I heard then was that it was legal for the cheerleaders to use a megaphone, but not ordinary fans. I don't remember hearing anything about coaches.

RE: WBB: Stanford 61 UCLA 49 - BobK - 12-22-2020

If you follow Stanford you know Tara calls pressing fools gold. We held UCLA to 49 points
so her defensive plan worked.

Did anyone see Tara with a megacone or anything during the game. No

I didn't go get the current rules, but the 2019 NCAA rules for volleyball has
"19.2.6.1 Cheerleaders may use nonelectronic megaphones in a nondisruptive manner. Fans are permitted to use nonelectronic megaphones for voice amplification only."
(But that's volleyball, not basketball.)

Women's college basketball has become a very physical sport.  Pushing, shoving, grabbing for the ball, etc. is considered legal now I guess because I see a lot of it.  When I played basketball it was viewed as a non-contact sport.

A little different viewpoint on this game.  I thought Stanford was giving as good as they were getting.  The Hull sisters are very aggressive on defense.  When there is a possible loose ball it is like sharks smelling blood in the water.

I understand and agree about the physical nature of basketball. But, what I frequently saw was as our players would jump for a rebound the UCLA player would subtly push them so it seemed like our player was jumping at an angle away from the ball and would end up underneath the basket. Or when our player jumped for a rebound, UCLA would under cut them by backing in with their hips pushing them while in the air. Then our player couldn’t come straight down. Or our player would be crashing the boards, running towards the basket and the UCLA player trailing them would push them in the back making it seem like our player just kept running under the basket and out of bounds. They used the momentum of our players and nudged them enough to take them out of the play and sometimes put them at risk.

Maybe that’s consider savvy veteran tactics but I don’t see any of our players doing that.

I vividly remember being excited to see our team play the US National team at Maples. What I remember being surprised about was seeing that Diana Taurasi was a dirty player. They were veteran professionals - the Dream Team - playing against college players that idolized and looked up to them and she felt she had to cheat. She was savvy enough to get away with it. Maybe I’m naive and that is how the game is supposed to be played. I never liked her after watching her in that game.

RE: WBB: Stanford 61 UCLA 49 - mbdude - 12-23-2020

Griffin, i agree, always felt that Tarausi got a away with a lot of cheap shots - some not so subtle

But I looked at some of the UCLA game replay and didn't see the "shoves" in the back you mentioned
