2016. Goff(1). Wentz (2). Lynch (26). One mediocre starting QB but by no means a franchise pick; one guy that is simply lost. And a bust.
2017. Trubisky (2). Mahomes (10). Watson (12). You watch and wonder how Mahomes was not the first QB picked. And how 9 could pass on him. But would he be a superstar had the Bears selected him. Probably at some point. But not as immediate. Situations matter. In all a generational QB, an all pro and a below average starter.
2018. Mayfield (1). Darnold (3) Allen (7). Rosen (10) Jackson (32). Best for now was last, although Allen may end up the best of the bunch. Mayfield will never be a franchise QB. At best middle of the pack. Rosen a bust. Darnold the jury is out.
2019. Murray(1). Jones (6) Haskins 15). Murray will be, if is he isn’t already, a star. Haskins and Jones too early to tell. But neither have shown much.
2020. Burrows (1). Tua (5) Herbert (6). Love (26). Looks like the strongest group of the 5 years. With Love getting traded....
What is telling is AFTER round 1. Just looking at ‘16-‘18, (‘19-‘20 haven’t had enough time) I counted 20 QB’s drafted. Of those, Prescott (135) is the lone starter. Of the rest, probably the best to date is Jacoby Brissett. And I’d guess more than half are out of the league or at best on practice squads. Here’s the list: Harkenburg , Kessler, Cook, Cardale Jones, Hogan, Kizer, Webb, Beathard, Dobbs, Kaaya, Kelly, Rudolph, Lauletta, Mike White, Falk, Tanner Lee, McGough, Woodside
BTW, Beathard went in round 3 (104). Kizer and Davis Webb went ahead of him. Dobbs (135) Kaaya (215) and Kelly (253, Mr. Irrelevant) after.
this list
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_starting_quarterbacks_in_the_National_Football_League
shows the starting QBs (it looks like heading into this week's game), of them 22 of 32 were first round draft picks. If you add in some who are not playing due to injury (Joe Burrow and maybe some others) it looks like ~2/3rds of the starters were taken in the first round.

Lex, thanks for that compilation, interesting. I'm just curious about your comment on Baker Mayfield. Seems like he's taken over Cleveland well and for good. No?

What I mean by franchise QB is a fixture for years and the unquestioned leader of a playoff caliber and eventual SB potential team. That is what a No 1 overall QB pick is hoped to be.
While he certainly is Cleveland’s QB for the immediate future. I just see him as never being more than a middle of the pack QB. Just my opinion. He could prove me wrong.
Jets game a great example. Yes, he had a lot going against him. 4 receivers, including Landry, out. But good QBs find a way. He stunk it up. In a game they needed.

By that metric, Dan Marino was a failure in Miami.

Haskins is now available...

Quote:Rivera issued an official statement on the release:
"This afternoon, I met with Dwayne and informed him that we would be releasing him. I told him that I believe it benefits both parties that we go our separate ways. We want to thank Dwayne for his contributions these last two seasons and wish him well moving forward."
Haskins also released a statement following the move, via Twitter:
"My time with the WFT has unfortunately come to an end. I thank the team and fans for the opportunity to play for the team I grew up rooting for. I take full responsibility for not meeting the standards of [an] NFL QB, and I will become a better man and player because of this experience."

No he wasn’t. He was a fixture for years, the Dolphins were often in the hunt and he took them to a Super Bowl. He also was not the No 1 QB as you know. And the guy who was went to 5 SBs in 15 years. Won a couple. I suspect you remember him..... :).
Having said that, I guarantee you that had you offered to place a bet in ‘85 that the Dolphins with Marino and Shula would not get back to the SB, you’d have gotten great odds and a lot of takers. So in that respect, it was certainly personally disappointing to Marino.
Also, if you think Mayfield will approach Marino’s level, I got a bridge to sell you.

He's already well exceeded Marino in one aspect--the guy's got more commercials than George Foreman and Shaq combined. . . .

Now Aijuk is out with a high ankle sprain. There has to be a connection between the injuries and the lack of off season training supervision.

Hmmm, perhaps it goes beyond Turley. My guess is that the Santa Clara Health Officer holds some responsibility for all the injuries in her county the last few years.

If they decide to keep Jimmy a guy like Mills could be a good pick at #2 or #3.
I think they need to get Matt Stafford.

I don't think so. Stay with Jimmy and scout the QB's to get somebody down the draft as a backup who can actually see over onrushing linemen.

Heard Brent Jones on KNBR the other day. I like Jones because he's very candid. He questioned whether Harbaugh had what it took at a professional level on the 49ers flagship station while Harbaugh was in his second year there.
The topic was the 49er QB position, whether 49ers should keep Garoppolo or whether they should go after Watson, Stafford or Rodgers. Brent's comments, in no particular order:
1) JG pre-ACL tear was an excellent quarterback, with a superb w/l record. Post ACL tear, JG is mediocre. Unlikely to improve.
2) QBs aside, a healthy 49er team is a proven Super Bowl team.
3) Jones' QB's in order of preference, as he stated it: 1) Stafford, 1a), Rodgers, 3) Watson.
4) Thinks Watson is a terrific quarterback, but the Texans will demand -- and receive -- a ridiculous amount of draft picks, along the lines of the Ricky Williams trade from a few years ago. Watson is, after all, 25 and has been All Pro three times in four years.
5) Thinks Stafford is a superb quarterback, quoted Steve Young as saying Stafford would be one of the best QBs in the league if he wasn't laboring under bad coaching, bad ownership, bad GMs and bad players (outside of Calvin Johnson). Said that Stafford on the 49ers would be reborn. Also said Stafford has the perfect blend of time left (he's only 32) and experience (he's been in the league 12 years). He's highly, highly durable.
6) Jones said that the Niners have the best WR/TE mix of all NFL teams in Aiyuk, Samuel and Kittle and it isn't close.
7) Said Rodgers would be a superb addition, but that Rodgers might feel oddly about going to the 49ers since he's publicly lambasted them over the years for not making him the #1 overall NFL selection.
