Dominant first half by the #1 ranked Stanford Cardinal. Brink continues to impress and Prechtel is back on track. Jones controlling the game. AZ has been ice cold, but don't expect that to continue. They are a good team that will warm up. Great way to start 2021.

That was a much better 2nd quarter. Arizona was playing sagging man, clogging the paint, forcing us to shoot from outside and taking away Belibi, for the most part. Once our rain of threes began--we were 6/9--then the Arizona defense began to loosen.
Very nice to see Prechtel shooting with confidence, and to see Jump doing so much better. Although Jump got stuck on a couple of switches on Ari McDonald and could not defend her. But who can?
We also started the first quarter with 3 turnovers, but would up with 8 for the half. Not great, but better.
But here is the real story. We have 29 rebounds. Arizona has 13.
We are shooting 48%. They are shooting 19%.
I doubt that this game will continue in this way. Arizona will play better in the second half, and we will need to keep up the intensity and not let things slip. True national championship caliber teams would pour it on and not let Arizona back in the game. We shall see if that description fits us.

Haley had a couple of insane step backs for scores. Who else have we had with those moves? Powell comes to mind; Candice maybe although I mostly remember her going around people with great speed.

I mean, hard to argue with a 24 point halftime lead against the #6 team in the country.
As you note, one would expect Arizona to play better in the second half, so some let-up is almost inevitable. But I wouldn't take that as a sign of weakness so much as reversion to the mean.

Players like Prechtel and Jump has something to prove--they want to pour it on, I am sure. And the memory of last year's loss won't make the team charitable or complacent.

Our starting 5 doesn't have a great +/- in this game.
Brink is now in. Let's see if we get the spark

Well, the third quarter was underwhelming. We lost it 17-21, so both our offense and our defense were off.

As expected, Arizona warmed up a bit and actually outscored us in the third quarter (21-17). But we still have a 20 point lead after three.

We lead 61-41 heading into the final ten as Arizona chips 4 points off of our lead. I would like to see the ball in one of our offensive playmakers' hands more often at end of clock situations. Anna ended up with the ball on one possession and while a capable shooter, we surely had better options to create a play out of nothing.
The Wildcats' shooting percentage has crept up, but we are still holding them below 30%. I would like to see our shooting percentage climb up, too. We missed some shots and only thanks to our offensive rebounding did we get another chance to score.
I like the progress of Belibi around the paint against a high quality opponent; her ability to score inside will be needed
I am still frustrated by some of the low percentage passes we make, trying to be too cute and thread the needle when it's unnecessary. Unselfishness is a great thing, but it should also be balanced by smart decision making and knowing when your teammate is not as open as you think she is.

Not sure why the bench hasn't been cleared with a 22-pt lead under 5:00 to go. Brink just got whacked, maybe an ankle but cmon let's protect our people.

Agreed. Reminds me a little of Marta, making amazing, stupendous assists but at the cost of an even number of deflections and turnovers. But it is not just one person doing it now.

Jesus. We're only up 24 against #6 in the country. What else do you want?

Amazing that we can’t be thrilled by this great win
This is aggressiveness
Drive drive or get the ball inside
Stanford 25 of 28 at the free throw line.
A great stat. McDonald 3 of 18
Not great Brink with an ice pack on her knee but walking fine

I think the one thing that stands out to me this game is the free throw shooting. We shot 89% from the line. If we reverted to last season's average, it would've been slightly closer, but a very good performance today with a lot of contributors. I'm loving how big a part of the success Anna Wilson has been this year, 8 rebounds, a couple timely threes. Great game from Stanford.

A national title; it may be nitpicking in a comfortable win, but you should continue to strive to improve, because in a close game in the NCAA tournament, it may come down to one or two possessions and making the right play.
Also, being happy with a big win and still looking for ways to improve are not two mutually exclusive things. I am sure Tara is excited about a decisive win against a top 10 opponent, but that doesn't mean she won't look at the tape and see things we can improve on. Didn't she herself say after the demolition we had against Cal a few weeks ago, the team only has done a handful of the list of things she wanted to see from them?

That was fun!! The most fun I've had all year.
In this conference, there will be plenty of games that are struggles, where Stanford will have to scrap and claw for enough points and stops to win. It's nice to play a game where things go right. It's especially nice when you have one of those games against a top opponent.
Now to prepare for ASU, a game that always seems like a war.

Great win. A lot to like.
Am surprised that Zona had more Oboards than us (14-12) Of course, they had more opportunity for them with more missed shots than us.
